Yup, it's time again to Spring back to Daylight "Savings" Time.

Alright, I'll confess that I am a partisan on the issue. To me, it seems that the so-called "advantages" or either unsubstantiated, or not of that much value. Whereas the DISadvantages are much more profound. Large among them are the effective "jet lag" suffered by virtually everyone, and the ensuing accidents of all sorts. And there is the expense to the economy of changing all 3 quillion clocks and other devices that either keep time or depend on the time for operation. Just fer starters.

T'other side:

(Of course, there IS the benefit that it helps us set our calendars to anticipate St Patrick's Day. ;-) And on that, BTW, on SPD, everyone is Irish, not just straights. Yeah, I went there!!)

OK, Catters. Havatit!

Here in UK it's on Sunday 26th March, and it's called British Summer Time.
I find it takes quite a while to adjust. Luckily we don't have too many clocks to change. And it does make for longer evenings to be sitting outside and doing a bit of gardening.
Not so thrilled at losing an hour's sleep though!

As yanks who are visiting the UK this month, we get to change our clocks twice this time. Oh joy!

I don't mind changing my clocks at all... takes maybe 10 minutes. I do NOT get 'jet lag' or confusion from a one hour change... and I DO look forward to the longer days during planting & mowing months.
And it is...in most areas... convenient for kids waiting for school buses. Farmers? They get up whenever they need to in order to take care of animals...etc. Time is only relevant when they need to go into town and shop. (If I lived on a farm, I'd set one clock just to match 'official' time, and leave some to suit ME!)

The days aren't any longer, not one jot, Bill. You're simply getting up earlier. That's the point.

I dislike daylight savings time. It makes no sense.

No, the days aren't getting any longer.... but since I've been 'retired' for 20 years, I go to bed mostly after the late news... and thus can sleep as late as is comfortable. I understand that those who have to punch a time clock may find it inconvenient... depending on their personal habits. But when DST was introduced widely in the mid '60s, I was going to work every day...(in Kansas) and the only effects I noticed were the positive ones of having more daylight after I got home.

I realize that people have very different 'diurnal cycles' and react to the length of day in different ways, and that length of daylight is different between South Texas and Maine.... and that people at the Western side of each time zone might see it differently from those at the Eastern end....etc.....yet, the total length of each day remains the same in each area and only begins & ends at a different point on the clock for a few months.

I'm not sure why *I* adjust almost instantly... and I regret that it is so upsetting for others. The theory seems to be that the whole system does more good than harm...........

But... take heart... Trump seems to be undoing almost everything the Feds had in place.... maybe he'll be tossing DST out also...

Didn't Grandpa Jones on Hee Haw have a rap/song grousing against Daylight Savin' Time? Maybe that's a MUSIC question.

Ugh. At least now being semi-retired it won't impact me as much.

Bill D., you sound like my former bro-in-law. in his work he traveled constantly, all over the world. Never phased him at all.

I really suffer from jet-lag and never feel like I fully adjust to daylight savings time.

I think the days are getting longer BillD, because we're closing the curtains now at 6pm and not at 4.40pm as we did during the depths of winter. Once the clocks change, we won't need to close them at all!

It's not the clocks going forward in March that's the problem, it's having them go back in October.

It makes much more sense to leave the clocks alone. If we want to change the times we go to work or school or ever, change the timetable. There's no need to impose change that on society as a whole.

The "days" are not getting longer.... just the hours of daylight. I was responding literally to Acme's point.

Janie.. I never traveled a lot by plane, so serious jet-lag was not an issue.... and the few times I flew from one coast to another, I was able to adjust quickly, and one night's sleep had me 'zoned in'.
These days, I go to bed and get up at varied times. It seems that as long as I get 'about' 6½ hours, I can cope... though I much prefer 7½-8. If I don't get enough sleep, I am shaky & miserable no matter what time zone or DST or "God's Time" is involved.

McGrath... the problem is that businesses and schools and transportation and farmers and sports...etc... can't all "change their timetables" with the same convenience, so IF any need to change, it's better that all do.
I notice that Arizona...or most of it... does NOT change... and Indiana used to just partially change... but it drove the trains & airlines crazy trying to match schedules with neighboring states. I'm not sure how Arizona manages.

Obviously, there's no way to please everyone, and some folks and some functions adjust easier than others. I like the change, and tomorrow morning is one I anticipate all Winter long. I will force myself to get to bed earlier tonight, as we have to be somewhere tomorrow morning.

In a way it sort of depends on your latitude. I live at around fifty north. We're about a quarter of an hour behind exact GMT, so in winter the sun is at its highest at about 12.15 pm. In summer it's an hour later. In June the sun sets at about 9.40 pm. The trouble with the UK climate is that temperatures tend to drop like a stone in the evening. You can have 28 degrees by day, but, by nine in the evening, it can be down to 17. It's rare that we get balmy evenings like they do in Spain and Italy, where, in summer, you can expect at least 21 or 22 late into the evening, if not higher. Great for sitting on a balcony quaffing Prosecco. I'd like to see double summertime in the UK. That would mean light until after five in the evening at Christmas and until eleven in June/July. We'd be able to take better advantage of whatever evening light and warmth was left until quite late in June and July. I understand that some Scottish farmers object. Give the buggers independence then, say I!

Trying to round up the hit single by Grandpa Jones.

Am doing so, however, in the music threads, having revived one called Spring Ahead. Found some of the verses but not all of them. Anyone knows anymore, please pitch in upstairs., Thanks.

When I worked for an aerospace company that had been recently taken over by an American company they called for a meeting at a set hour via a newly installed email-come-appoinment app.

So in the last week of March some people turned up to find most had not because they had been reminded verbally. The DST date in America is different to the UK. The app coped with the longtitudinal tie difference but was tied to the American DST dates.

My cousin's husband told me that in Canada, where he traveled as a salesman, that there were farming communities that didn't have DST that surrounded towns that did (in the 60s). Or maybe it was Double versus Singe ST. And they had exclaves of nearby timezones for financial reasons. He said it was very complex.

In the UK we call it BST (British) because we had Double Summer Time during the WW2

I once had a job which involved meeting incoming passenger ferries. One March I duly remembered to put the clocks forward, but woke in the middle of the night and bizarrely put my alarm back again, meaning that several hundred people had to wait on the quayside.

One of them was our MP, who complained to the Home Secretary, which led to an apology from the Secretary of State in the Commons and a mention in Hansard.

Must write a song about it one day.

Judging from what I see on the Mudcat webpage here, the clock is still on Standard Time today for the website.

In the 60s, (in Kansas) when DST was made official, I was listening to a radio talk show. Some old woman called in to complain about messing with "God's time"... and then she said (direct quote), "Besides, it will confuse the chickens"!

My method for coping with DST is to advance the central heating clock by 15 minutes each weekend in March, and sleep with the curtains open. Wakened by the earlier daylight and with the bathroom warm, over the course of a month I change from an Owl to a Lark - and when DST arrives my body clock is already adjusted to it.

Oh I'm always up at around 6am anyway, dark or light. But my husband will be glad of some evening light when driving home at 9pm from his work. There are no street lamps in our village or the surrounding ones, and while he has headlights obviously, it's far better with some daylight on the narrow winding country roads. (They have no white lines or cats' eyes, and it can get a bit hairy, especially with deer and pheasants etc hurtling across in front of the car) Changing the clocks gives another hour or so of extra evening light.

Can't think that a one-hour change is going to disrupt anyone's body clock much. I went to Europe three times last summer, put my watch forward each time and never gave it another thought. Must've been the Cava and Prosecco. I recommend the treatment.

You don't have to conform! From the Wikipedia entry for Llangennith, Gower.

Llangennith was at one time the most infamous, rough-and-ready village on the peninsula, its villagers referred to in Gower dialect as 'Llangenny Oxen', always the first to rush to any shipwreck, particularly those in Rhossili Bay, and feuding with neighbouring villagers over any plunder they could find.

During World War One, when the British government introduced daylight saving, the villagers held a public meeting - and graciously voted to fall in line with the rest of the country, for a trial period of one month.

In the churchyard are buried the Gower folk-singer, Phil Tanner, who died in 1950; and Anthony Eyre DFC (1918–1946)

I have no problems with the change to DST. The Spring adjustment feels about the same as traveling one time zone to the east, something I do several times a year. I suspect that folks who live near time zone boundaries and frequently travel from one time zone to the other are less affected by DST changes than those who spend most of their time in a single time zone.

Yes they can, if they wish to. IF they see any need to. It's what humans have always done for thousands of years.
