Always interesting to see some of those who brag they 'never strike the match' staying busy fanning the flames. Not calling names is not by itself a defense.

In a few months I will have been here for 21 years(Nov. '96), with very few personal attacks on me or attributed to me. It IS possible to discuss and debate without rancor, although the tendency seems to be programmed in the DNA of some....

(so... am I now fanning the flames myself? I hope not..... just trying to assess what has happened to the site.)

I also think that when posts become personally insulting they should be deleted and the poster told why

I have recently see posts where the poster makes two reasonable points then gets personal which to me negates any argument and stops me reading the rest .

TTHere are very few people who do this on this forum - less than half a dozen - unfortunately they are persistent in the practice, giving the impression that there are more of them than there actually are.
Their name calling is usually accompanied by complaints there there is "too much information" (in other words, too much "addressing the subject under discussion")
AS Joe F intimates, enthusiastic argument is often regarded as "nastiness"
I know of only two posters who set out to be "nasty" on this forum - one who persistently talks down to people as if he was addressing a roomful of feeble-minded malcontents; another other, a newbie who seems to have lifted his style directed from the former, even to the extent of borrowing the same phrases - trolls don'tr count - like the poor, they are always "with us"
The rest is the type of argument that is raised by any subject that people regard as serious.
I have always been heartened by the gentle reason Sen has brought to these discussions, even when I find myself not agreeing with her - If she goes, that is what we will have lost.
Nevertheless, I don't participate in this forum because I have nothing else to do - I come to learn and to pass on what I think I know
That has always worked for me - I've taken away far more than I've given
I've always been staggered by the amount of generosity shown by people on this forum - both in sharing information, and, as far as the music is concerned, the exchange of actual material.
It has helped me in my work and I would like to think that to be the same for others.
Only a tiny few come here to be noticed or to "win" arguments - they come to swap ideas.
Nobody, i hope, come to make friends - we are a discussion forum, not a mutual admiration society.
I hope Sen reconsiders - if she doesn't, I'll miss her

Senoufou, I'm really hoping you will visit the music section of Mudcat even if you stay away from the BS section. I agree whole-heartedly with the sentiments expressed in this thread and you are one of the Mudcatters whose posts I always enjoy. Your soul shines through here.

I think every one here has, at some stage or another, thought that some of the contributors could drive us out of here, but it's such a wonderful community and I just keep coming back here, even if I just take a break for a while.

I attempt to lure American Folk artists, historians, archivists and enthusiasts to the Mudcat, and am repeatedly rejected because the Mudcat is now viewed as an UK Folk Forum. I don't blame the UK'ers, nor wish them to change anything they are doing, however, I'd like a nice balance so not to alienate either.

Members/Users: We've never had a worse year as far as contributions. I am footing the bill for over 50% of the expenses year-to-date. We have maybe a dozen folks that contribute on any sort of consistent basis. I'd like to refuse any further contribution from these folks, because I feel they carry a burden that they need not if I did my job right. I would like to see a whole new set of folks step up to the plate and get us through a month or more. Remember, it does not need to come out of your pocket. We have an international community of like-people here. Items that one may have and not need or want no longer can find a happy home in our auction. You can host a sing and put a tip bucket out. There are a million things you can think of to support this site and it's purpose.   Nude calendars, recipes, blackmail…

Max: You need to keep this site running smoothly. These downtimes and outages are unacceptable for a real Website. We want reliability and we want you to fix the duplication and miss-ordered threads. Most importantly, you need a better backup system to ensure we won't lose any of this valuable resource.

Jeff: I want the related threads to be in a drop down box. For that matter, I'd like the thread posting summary in a drop down as well.

Everyone: She ain't what she used to be. We'll never get it back. This site should be about our eclectic interest in old-time traditional music from all over the world. Our local communities don't have a lot to offer us as far as merchandise and community, so we go to the Mudcat. We should welcome the newbies. We should covet the information we have now and strive to collect more. We should use this place to meet each other, organize and/or promote events. Please, don't forget the good of such a place.

To those of you who aren't around so much anymore: Give us another shot, please.

Senoufrou, can't you stay around and just look at the Music posts? The BS section is at the bottom and easily ignored. I don't understand why you need to abandon the whole site...??? Or, if a music thread gets nasty (as they certainly can) just bail out of it altogether - I'll bet the mods would even delete all your comments in it, if you wanted to remove yourself from the discussion 100%. They're usually pretty obliging about stuff anything reasonable.

Wish you'd change your mind... horribleness is everywhere on the internet (in real life too). I've had to reinforce my own mental defenses a hundredfold in the past few years - just going online too often feels like being under siege, even when nobody is specifically targeting you. The negative-overload sure does make ya develop coping strategies

It's a measure of the affection Catters obviously hold you in that I haven't read (and would hate to see) a single Bye-Felicia snark from anyone. That in itself is quite an accomplishment. Reconsider?

I too am sad to see Sen's voice of reason depart - though I would point out that discussions like this inevitably end it tears if they rise above agreement for agreement's sake
The pubs used to put up signs saying "no politics, no religion, no football" when I was growing up in Liverpool
When people feel strongly about serious subjects, they will express themselves in strong terms which can turn nasty
It's interesting to note that two of the worst offenders on this forum turn up to pay their respects, carefully distancing themselves from their own behaviour
Doesn't hold out much hope for th future, does it?
