Subject: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jun 19 - 01:23 PM It now means there is potentially twice as much bloody football coverage on the telly...!!! The sport can only achieve true equality when it becomes combined into mixed men's and women's teams.. That should be the future accepted norm... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Jun 19 - 02:41 PM It might happen. In the meantime, in the interests of equality, you should decide which gender of footie should be allowed. Maybe by the toss of a coin... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: gillymor Date: 26 Jun 19 - 03:51 PM The only time I watch soccer seems to be when the U.S. women's team is playing. While the women don't seem to be as fast and explosive as the men they do seem to play with a certain amount of finesse and judging from the U.S./Spain match the other day, no lack of physicality. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 26 Jun 19 - 05:35 PM Better than women getting cauliflower ears playing rugby, but (as I said in verse here ) I'm glad netball - devised as a (largely) non-contact sport for the ladies - is making a big comeback; or table tennis - where, unlike tennis, a lady can reach a high level without getting bulging veins and muscles on her racket arm. (By the way, watching the BBC news, I just heard the Dalai Lama say that he does not mind a female successor, as long as she is good looking!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jun 19 - 05:52 PM AS much as I am indifferent to any game played with a round ball, I saw one of the best nasty vicious fouls for years on the news a few days ago. Proper 'accidental' high kick aimed at the head.. For a moment it was like the thrill of real 1960s mud and blood football again... when we won the cup... aahhh It was a foul from a women's football match... Well done women.. the spirit of authentic football lives on... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Jun 19 - 09:21 PM That foul was a split second in ninety minutes committed by one person out of 22. You could have tried to enjoy the other 89.9999 minutes of spirit and skill. Depends what you want, really. There's always EastEnders. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jun 19 - 10:31 PM Steve - I suppose what I want really is rugby... and sumo wrestling... Women's rugby is coming along, but it's a sport where the physical disparity between men and women may be too much for mixed sex teams to be feasible...??? Though rugby teams do have positions for smaller men... But if schools and local clubs started boys and playing together in mixed teams right from the get go, maybe that would sow the seeds for a next generation that takes it for granted as the norm...??? Team selection based on individual skill and enthusiasm for the sport rather than gender... Footballers are all round athletes, and the physical differences betwen men and women should not be as significant as in other sports like rugby and sumo.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 26 Jun 19 - 10:36 PM Big oops... "But if schools and local clubs started boys and girls playing together"... Nowt sexist with that omission.. just tired, bleary eyed, and careless typing at 3.30am... btw.. the next sumo tournement starts in July.. and women's sumo does exist at local grass roots level... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Big Al Whittle Date: 27 Jun 19 - 01:07 AM Oneca again its this Brexit business. I remember a time when a football wass a big heavy leather thing. When it got wet, which was most of the year - it would knock anyone less than fourteen stone flying. Footballers like Jack Charlton, Pete Storey, Andy Gray, billy Bremner....they did theses sliding tackles...now that WAS football - not all these dainty little foreign buggers skipping about. And as for women, they wouldn't have survived the pie van and the hot tea, laced with nitric acid. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Mr Red Date: 27 Jun 19 - 02:05 AM It won't be long before politicians will notice their popularity and have to have a favourite women's team. Or if your are a Boris, a favourite woman.............. who you can argue with. And a colleague who refereed women's games did tell of some of the women he had to ban. Physicality you ask? Not unknown. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: G-Force Date: 27 Jun 19 - 04:24 AM My dad used to play hockey (by which I mean hockey, not ice hockey), and they used to have mixed male-and-female teams. I don't know if they still do. I don't think it would work in football (=soccer), not unless the officials could rein in some of the physicality. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Vincent Jones Date: 27 Jun 19 - 04:43 AM A few years ago I took my daughter to Womad and spent so much I should have had a sponsor's marquee erected. Shortly after we went to see Man City women play Chelsea women at Staines FC's ground. Entrance couldn't have been more than a fiver (I think it was £3), and kids get in for nowt, a burger and a brew cost £2.50. And the football was of a high standard. And if we'd have brought a ball, City's players would have signed it (OK, I knew our reserve goalkeeper, but it was a friendly atmosphere). If you like footy (and, fair enough, it's not the superior 13-a-side code), women's football is well worth watching, and won't break the bank. |

From: gillymor Date: 27 Jun 19 - 06:26 AM As a welcome side attraction, to me anyway, U.S. captain Megan Rapinoe has got President Racist Nitwit's nose out of joint when some time ago she responded to a reporter's question that she would not go to the f______ White House in the event of a U.S. victory. Who could turn down a trip to Trump's White House for room temperature, fast-food death burgers and a photo-op with the Groper in Chief? A lot of championship teams could, it turns out. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: DMcG Date: 28 Jun 19 - 12:25 PM I am not a fan of football, whatever gender the players. But I recommend a project called No Petticoats here by Louise Jordan, which includes a section on women footballers during the first world war. I have copied an extract below: === Women Footballers Whilst researching individual women I was drawn to the stories of women footballers such as Lily Parr, Jennie Morgan and Bella Raey. Collectively, women footballers of the Great War had a phenomenal impact on the lives of their communities and their country. When the FA suspended men’s football teams from competing in 1915 it was women who kept the sport alive. Encouraged to play during breaks by factory owners to build morale, women munitionettes’ teams organised fundraising matches. These women footballers raised thousands (millions in today’s money) for POW and soldier’s charities, only for women’s football to be banned by the FA for an incredible fifty years (1921 -1971). |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: vectis Date: 29 Jun 19 - 05:28 AM The women's game was banned from club grounds in 1921 because it was pulling huge crowds compared to the men's game. They tried to claim that it was because it wasn't suitable for ladies to play but, in my opinion, as an ex women's league player, it was pure jealousy on the part of the professional game. Without proper grounds to play in women's football was relegated to the local recreation pitches and crowds dwindled. It has only really revived in the last 30 years. |
