7 pm Eastern [ USA, so I presume EST]
YouTube Watch Party Link- https://youtu.be/dSOXbqRooNU
Sea Shanties: Adding Historical Context to the Hottest New TikTok Trend (+ singing along!)

John Roberts and Chris Koldewey will present a discussion about sea shanties, their place in history, and their current use (including the history behind the current viral TikTok collaboration video, Soon May the Wellerman Come). This presentation is brought to you with support from the West Virginia Humanities Council. Join us via a YouTube watch party! We will monitor the chat to make certain as many questions get answered as possible.

John Roberts - Born and raised in Worcestershire, England, of a Welsh family, John is a national treasure. He is one of the foremost culture bearers of his genre, specializing in songs of the sea, pub songs, and traditional British Isles folk songs. He is also considered one of the foremost Anglo concertina players in the English-speaking world and uses the banjo for unique settings in many of the songs he sings. He can give the background of any song he performs, often telling the listener the circumstances from which it might have been written and from whom the song was collected. John's latest album is a collection of maritime songs entitled "Sea Fever."

Chris Koldewey has been singing and playing folk music, and sea music in particular since he was a teenager. He comes from a family rich in maritime traditions, and his lullabies as a child were traditional songs of the sea. Raised on the North Shore of Long Island, he was exposed to a wide variety of folk music. A public school music teacher by trade, Chris spends his "free time" as a Shantyman at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut: one of the few places left where shanties are used for their original purpose — coordinating shipboard tasks.

That was such a wonderful session! Augusta will have it up on their YouTube channel, so it's a great thing to pass on to people who want to know what Chanties/Shanties are all about. Chris showed how the different kinds of shanties worked by physical gestures to give the feel of the work being done.
Grand singing, great information. John finished off the session with the whole story about the source of The Wellerman - including showing the book where it was first detailed.

cheers!

The weekly folk programme on BBC Radio 2, Wednesdays 9-10 p.m. focussed on chanteys tonight, 3 Feb. The first half hour was the most informative, I think. It should be available online to listen later. Some BBC radio programmes are only archived for a week, some for a month and some special ones for longer.

I'll be hosting a Chantey Sing Feb. 19th at 7:30 EST on Facebook live, no account required. We'll cover the different kinds of chanteys but mostly sing. I'll also be including some Revels footage from past Sea Revels productions with Louis Killen singing a few chanteys and I'll briefly talk about the TikTok chantey explosion as well. Hope you can join in the fun.

I have a disinclination to use facebook, I am not happy with the potential for numerous unsolicited adverts which seem to arise from the use of it.

Because of this I prefer Zoom where I have found likeminded fellow folkies who are not trying to sell me something.

I have found that the smaller zoom meetings where all the participants are known to each other tend to be the more enjoyable, possibly because I know the people involved.

There is also a "Permathread: Online Events - current listings" at Mudcat. I started this Chantey thread at the time when TicToc chanteying and Soon may the Wellerman come was a big news topic. A Mudcat editor added the words "& folk events" to the title, but given that we have another ongoing thread for online events listings; I think it would be better to use this one specifically for sea song listings. As you notice, I've just broadened that a little bit beyond chanteys/shanteys!
