Subject: Gaol Troimh Aimsirean (love through the seasons) From: Felipa Date: 16 Jun 21 - 05:18 PM yes, it would be great to have an editing key. I haven't gone over this post in any detail, but right away I spotted the first line: "funchd an Dubhlachd" which must mean "fuachd an Dubhlachd", the cold of December. Roimhimm should be roimhinn", before us, also spelled "romhainn". Even Celtic Lyrics Corner, usually quite a good site, has these errors which are repeated all over the internet. The first verse is love in the cold of Dec and going into the spring when the flowers awaken. The second verse love in summer (samhradh, Gradh geal an t-samhraidh = the bright love of summer) and the third verse autumn (foghar, "oiteag an fhoghair", the autumn breeze), fourth verse begins When the freezing winter [cutting]like a lance ... "Seasmhach" and "buan" both refer to permanance. The song was recorded by Capercaillie, and I suspect it is a fairly recent composition. Is an author given on the album credits? perhaps band member, Donald Shaw?? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gaol Troimh Aimsirean From: Felipa Date: 16 Jun 21 - 07:04 PM so I take it the author is John A. MacLeod. Thanks for that information, but there was no need to paste in the same set of lyrics --- Runrigfan, why did you not at least take the opportunity to correct "funchd" to "fuachd" and "Roimhimm" to "roimhinn"? Those wrongly spelt words stand out glaringly to someone who is familiar with Gaelic. Didn't you see that I wrote that "right away I spotted the first line: "funchd an Dubhlachd" which must mean "fuachd an Dubhlachd", the cold of December. Roimhimm should be roimhinn", before us, also spelled "romhainn". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gaol Troimh Aimsirean From: Felipa Date: 16 Jun 21 - 07:14 PM Runrigfan copied from Capercaillie's own page, but someone made typing errors in the lyrics there, and no-one corrected them. That page also has "thaining" instead of "thàinig" for the song Hoireann O. I think I looked at the site earlier, trying to find the author of Gaol Troimh Aimsirean but I didn't find it. Where did you get info re "John A. McLeod"? I'm off now to email Jane Skinner to say that corrections are needed to the lyrics ... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Gaol Troimh Aimsirean From: Felipa Date: 17 Jun 21 - 07:51 AM I've already received a reply from Jane Skinner, the contact person listed on the Capercaillie website, "I will ask our website administrator to make the changes and get it checked with a Gaelic reader." Her reply was wonderfully quick, but I don't know how long it will be until improved lyrics for Nàdurra. Incidentally, the modern standard spelling of the word for natural is "nàdarra", but there is a little bit of acceptable variation in Gaelic spellings and there are several words which one sees some people spelling with an "a" and others with a "u". That's especially true if you are comparing texts from different time periods; but there is still some variation at present, a bit more I would say than the variation between American and British spelling. But there are no Gaelic words spelled "funchd" or " roimhimm". Runrigfan, you didn't need to be proficient in Gaelic to make those two spelling corrections before you posted the same lyrics for a second time, because I had already pointed them out as the most glaring (to me) errors in the text. |
