Sorry to tell those assembled that we have lost another fine stalwart of the British folk scene, Hector Gilchrist, whose memories went back to the very earliest 1960s folk clubs. Hector was a fine purveyor of Scottish songs, had a wonderful voice, and was one of the best harmony singers I've ever encountered.

Yes I heard a couple of days ago. Hector I went back 50+ years to the days when we were both regulars at the Surbiton Folk Club.
Commiserations to Shona his wife, and all of his family.

Oh, no. Such a fine singer, and such a nice person - and one of the most beautiful male voices I've heard. I'm glad I got to meet him, if only through Zoom singing sessions.

Here's a playlist for him: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLznM4RD7VzeTA50AlQUm6WRpDuohFzjIT

And his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFkyQP63KxH1y3Bi2ontFgg

I've been listening to him for the last hour. Such wonderful singing!

Hector was one of the founding residents of the Sing Out Folk Club in Crewe, Cheshire, in 1965, when he was working at Reaseheath Agricultural College in Nantwich. He brought quality singing of Scottish traditional songs when most of the other residents and floor singers were still getting to grips with the likes of This Land is Your Land (the first song sung at the club). Nothing wrong with This Land .. of course. But Hector's singing and that tenor voice were something else. By the time I landed up in Crewe in 1972, Hector had already moved away, but he returned for various anniversaries and always came to the club when he was in the area. And in more recent years, after the club folded, he came to reunions, including the annual between Christmas and New Year get together. I also met up with him every year at Sidmouth. A great singer, a great person. He will certainly be missed.

This is very sad news. I only "met" him on Zoom but he was, as others have noted, a great singer and guitar player. Thank you Hector. We are all the poorer for your passing. RIP

Only became aware of Hector (also the name of my then late - and much loved and lamented - Tuxedo cat) early in 2020, when trawling the 'Net for good songs and singers, but he was indeed a lovely singer.

Vale Hector.

Dear All,

It is great to see all these messages and tributes to my grandad, I just want to say there will be a tribute concert at some point next year keep your eyes on his website if you are interested as I will be managing it from now on.

Again, it warms my heart and so many in the family to see how much he meant not just in the folk scene but by friends I didn't even know he had. My email is on his website so don't be afraid to reach out. If you type Hector Gilchrist it should show up as the first link.

All the best,
Steven

It's great to know that you are keeping up the website, Steven. It mean's that Hector's legacy will be preserved both for those of us who knew him, and even gain new fans for his music.

Fond remembrances of meeting up with Hector at Sidmouth and other festivals. Lovely bloke and an excellent singer with a rich warm voice.

Thanks for the update Steven. I first met Hector in 1965, even before the Sing Out folk club in Crewe. He came to our school Ceilidh One Society concert as a guest singer. Everyone mentions his fine tenor voice: he could easily have had a career as a crooner in big bands (and I believe was almost tempted by that route) but decided dairying wasn’t the more stable profession His funeral was extremely moving, a sad occasion, and I held on emotionally until that final recording of him singing The Last Trip Home. I think a lot of people succumbed to tears then. A memorial concert sounds like a fitting tribute
