Subject: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Steve Shaw Date: 16 Jul 23 - 06:17 PM The women's later-stage matches and the men's final were just superb. Especially the men's final. What a game. A lovely young feller called Carlos edged a bloody thriller against No-vax Djokovic. I've hated Djokovic till now. I don't hate him any more. Carlos and Djoko kept me in all afternoon and there were times when I couldn't believe what I was seeing. When Carlos had finally prevailed, Novak was so gracious in defeat, an absolute gent. What I've loved is that we appear to be seeing the end of the crusty old guard and are seeing the young bucks (of both genders and none!) assuming the mantle, fresh-faced, super-athletic and with no baggage. How good is that. And I don't even watch tennis. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Jul 23 - 12:38 AM That sounds intriguing! I'll have to look for it online. I don't watch tennis, especially since years ago when I was an Urban Park Ranger in New York City I had to work at the US Tennis Center a few times for the US Open. Hot, noisy (jets overhead) and and a lot of rich white folks to whom you are invisible. Hopefully today's audiences reflect the diversity of the players. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Steve Shaw Date: 17 Jul 23 - 03:58 AM The Wimbledon audiences can get on my nerves in several regards. First, the plethora of royals and over-privileged big-knobs and celebs who seem to always be able to get in, along with their brats of course, unlike the hoi-polloi. 'Twas ever thus and I suppose it's the traditional Brit establishment thing. Second, there's always some bellend in the crowd who simply has to be the last to shout out before a serve. I suppose he's set his recorder at home so that he can play it back to his kids and say, "Hey, that was meeeee! Did you hear it?" But I managed to see past all that yesterday and enjoy tennis absolutely as good as it gets in that men's final. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Backwoodsman Date: 17 Jul 23 - 06:27 AM Great match. And very life-affirming to see No-vax Djokovic, a man I’ve always thought of as arrogant and self-centred, behave with such grace, warmth, and friendship in defeat towards his opponent. My faith is restored. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: gillymor Date: 17 Jul 23 - 07:34 AM Borg over McEnroe in 1980, the one with the 16-18 tiebreaker in the 4th set and an 8-6 one in the 5th. That match was exhausting just to watch. There was a changing of the guard aspect to yesterday's match. Alcaraz seems to have all the tools, court smarts and an all surface game, plus he's fun to watch. No telling what he might do in the game. I don't think No Joke is finished in the majors but he didn't come through in some of those crucial moments where you'd always expect him to. Like they say, father time is undefeated. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Senoufou Date: 18 Jul 23 - 03:18 AM Oh Lord, I hate tennis! So bloomin' boring. My parents used to play, and my father was especially talented. I was dragged along to watch and was bored stiff. I'd sit on the grass making daisy chains and yawning.I just have to hear that 'plink plonk' on TV and I change the channel immediately. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bloody tennis... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Jul 23 - 11:03 AM I remember a song about Boris Becker from our folk club in the 80s. I shan't mention who wrote and sang it as the non PC memorable lines were I hate Boris Becker, I hope his balls go out I hate Boris Becker, he's a boring little Kraut The chorus was 15-love, 30-love, 40-love, Game 15-love, 30-love, 40-love, Game :-D |
