Subject: Lyr Add: ALL BY MYSELF (Irving Berlin, 1921)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 24 Nov 09 - 11:43 PM

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

ALL BY MYSELF
Irving Berlin
New York: Irving Berlin Inc., copyright 1921

1. I'm so unhappy! What'll I do?
I long for somebody who
Will sympathize with me.
I'm growing so tired of living alone.
I lie awake all night and cry.
Nobody loves me; that's why.

CHORUS: All by myself in the morning,
All by myself in the night,
I sit alone in a cosy Morris chair,
So unhappy there,
Playing solitaire.
All by myself I get lonely
Watching the clock on the shelf.
I'd love to rest my weary head on somebody's shoulder.
I hate to grow older
All by myself.

2. My name and number are in the book,
The one that hangs on a hook
In almost ev'ry drug store.
Why don't someone bother to look?
My central tells me all day long:
"Sorry the number is wrong."

Phew. The perils of preformatting. One typo: there is a lower case "c" in there, which does not mean Cminor!!!!!Should just be a C. yours, Peter T.

Ella Fitzgerald does a version of this on her Irving Berlin Songbook (this is copied from a couple of Ella sites):
INTRO:
I'm so unhappy What'll I do?
I long for somebody who
Will sympathize with me
I'm growing so tired of living alone
I lie awake all night and cry
Nobody loves me
That's why --

All by myself in the morning
All by myself in the night
I sit alone with a table and a chair
So unhappy there
Playing solitaire
All by myself I get lonely, etc.

No chords easy to hand, sorry. yours, Peter T.
P.S. Nancy Sinatra album (from the etc. to the etc.) was called Sugar!!! (Those were the days)

Dredging this out of my memory (it is terrifying to think that the first time I heard this was on a Nancy Sinatra record)

ALL BY MYSELF

I'm all by myself in the morning,
I'm all by myself in the night --
I sit alone in (my easy) a cozy Morris chair,
so unhappy there
playing solitaire.
All by myself I get lonely,
watching the clock on the shelf.
I'd love to rest my head
on somebody's shoulder...
How I hate to get older, all by myself.
