Subject: RE: blue sky's from now on From: Bill in Alabama Date: 19 Jun 98 - 12:38 PM There's a pop song from the 'forties called "Blue Skies," which has the line "Nothin' but blue skies from now on," but it's not the first line; as I recall, it's the final line in the chorus/refrain. I don't remember who or how many singers recorded it back then, but I recall that Willie Nelson recorded it in the late 'seventies or easly 'eighties. |

Subject: RE: blue sky's from now on From: Louisville Patrick Date: 09 Jul 98 - 11:59 AM Check out the version of "Blue Skies" on Steve Goodman's "The Easter Tapes." Irving Berlin is correct--he was also a big supporter of American Folk music. Goodman also does a great rendition of Berlin's "Easter Parade" on the same album. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: blue skies nothing but blue skies From: Bill in Alabama Date: 03 Dec 99 - 11:49 AM Kees: This was a 1946 Bing Crosby song, recorded in the '80's by Willie Nelson. I don't know where to find the tune, but the lyrics are available at http://www.kcmetro.cc.mo.us/pennvalley/biology/lewis/ crosby/BlueSkies.html good luck Bill |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: blue skies nothing but blue skies From: MMario Date: 03 Dec 99 - 12:09 PM According to the Levy site, Irving Berlin wrote and copyrighted this in 1929. There was a movie "Blue Skies" featuring the song in 1946. It's still listed as under copyright by Irving Berlin Muic, Inc. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: blue skies nothing but blue skies From: Steve Latimer Date: 03 Dec 99 - 12:11 PM Willie Nelson recorded this and several other songs from the same era on his 'Stardust' album. Stardust, All of Me, The Sunny Side of The Street, Moonlight in Vermont to name a few. Apparently the record company thought he was nuts to release an album of these old songs. Willie's reply was the they were all #1 songs in their day, they should sell again. The album was a resounding success. |

Subject: RE: ADD LYR: BLUE SKIES From: masato sakurai Date: 14 Mar 02 - 06:00 PM Levy has this sheet music, but doesn't show the score image.
Title: Irving Berlin's Blue Skies. [cover autographed by Irving Berlin].
The (original) first stanza is:
I was blue, just as blue as I could be
"Bing recorded the title tune from his movie with Fred Astaire on July 18, 1946, but Bing's version never charted. Perhaps this was because Bing's rendition of this up-beat song was curiously down-tempo, unlike the Willie Nelson reprise of the 1970s." (From Crosby Lyrics site). The movie is Blue Skies.
"'Blue Skies' was the most popular song in 1929 - all across the land, but especially in Wall Street. Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" is one of those tunes that gets stuck in your head, playing over and over for days in the windmills of your mind. And its unmitigated optimism expressed through its lyrics is sort of catchy, too. "Blue Skies smiling at me, Nothing but blue skies do I see." Hey! It's a great world out there! Isn't it?! Those words served as a pathetically ironic counterpoint to the tragic market events of late 1929 and aftermath. Ironically, the five stanzas of unbridled confidence in the present became the overture to the woeful Great Depression years of the not too distant future."(From BLUE SKIES AND MARKET BLUES (1929 & 2000))
MIDI (with lyrics) is HERE. Can be heard HERE (Irving Berlin's Blue Skies - As to be heard in Star Trek: Nemesis), too. ~Masato

Subject: Lyr Add: BLUE SKIES (Irving Berlin) From: Genie Date: 15 Mar 02 - 02:47 AM FWIW, it was the birth of Berlin's (and his wife Ellen's) daughter) that inspired him to write this song. Minor lyric correction: Blue Skies smilin' at me,... Nothin' but blue skies do I see. Bluebird singin' a song, Nothin' but blue skies from now on. Never saw the sun shinin' so bright, Never saw things goin' so right. Noticin' the days hurrying by. When you're in love, my, my how they fly. Blue skies smilin' at me, Nothin' but blue skies do I see, Blue day, all of them gone. Nothin' but Blue Skies from now on. ... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: Blue Skies (Irving Berlin) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Aug 13 - 02:31 PM "Blue Skies" was a last minute addition by Irving Berlin to the musical "Betsy" by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, a failure, but the song quickly caught on. There is a second verse, seldom heard. Here are the lyrics, complete: BLUE SKIES Irving Berlin, 1926 I was blue, just as blue as I could be Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me Then good luck came a-knocking at my door Skies were gray but they're not gray any more. Blue skies Smiling at me Nothing but blue skies Do I see. Bluebirds singing a song Nothing but bluebirds All day long. Never saw the sun shining so bright Never saw things going so right Noticing the days hurrying by When you're in love, my how they fly. Blue days All of them gone Nothing but blue skies From now on. I should care if the wind blows east or west I should fret if the worst looks like the best I should mind if they say it can't be true I should smile, that's exactly what I do. Sheet music 1927. Recorded the same year by Josephine Baker, George Olsen, Irving Kaufman, Fritz Kreisler. Sung by Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer," 1927. |
