Hi!

I just thought I'd tell you that I was interviewed by National Public Radio (NPR) for a newsmagazine program "Weekend Edition - Saturday" earlier today. The interview will be edited, probably mixed with some background music and, I was told, broadcast "live" this Saturday over NPR stations across the United States.

If you can't receive National Public Radio in your area or if you are busy living your life in another way (sleeping, for example) this Saturday morning and you'd like to hear the interview, there are 2 alternatives...

1. "Live" over the internet at the WNYC - New York website...
www.wnyc.org/indexPicks.html
between 0800-1000 (U.S. Eastern Time).
Pull up the page and click on the Ear Symbol on the lower left hand side of the page.

2. "Archived" over the internet at the National Public Radio (NPR) website...
http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/
for up to 1 week after broadcast.
When you have the page in front of you, just click on "latest show." (The NPR site also allows you to search for a station which may be in your reception area.)

Listening via the internet requires a sound card, speakers and the computer program which you either have already or is available as a free download from WNYC and other stations.

With me in the studio were 2 of The Johnson Girls, Deirdre Murtha and Bonnie Milner. Deirdre led us in a lovely song from the Nantucket whalers. The topics of the interview were The New York Packet's sea music program at South Street Seaport Museum in New York City and, briefly, sea music in general.

Hey, I thought about you today when I read this in the newspaper, **BG**:

Catch-and-release anglers have it rough: They fight hard to land their fish but never have anything tangible to bring back home. Not any more. Taxidermists have begun making wall mounts of just about every fish known, using resin and plastic, with no animal harmed to make the trophy. Fishers just name their catch, then select a taxidermist, who will go to a shelf, pull down a blank, paint it, stick on synthetic fins. Fake-fish trophies are increasing in popularity, reports the New York Times, and they cost just about the same as a mount for a real live dead fish. Betsy Marston, Editor High Country News

Hi!

Good to hear some Mudcatters are regular listeners to Weekend Edition - Saturday. I'll be on my way to a recording session tomorrow and I'll hear it in the car.

We have 30 to 60 in the audience for our concerts at South Street Seaport. This Sunday, with the publicity, gives us the opportunity to find a few new regulars. We do this on a volunteer basis although we all sing professionally elsewhere. It is important to have maritime music at a maritime museum!

Did I miss this? I caught what I think was the whole program, today, and didn't hear it. COuld it be next Saturday or even this Sunday? I always listen anyway, so I am sure I'll get to hear it, just want to make sure I didn't misunderstand.

Our NPR station switches over on Saturdays, half an hour before the end of Weekend Edition, to the bloody opera. We were all set up to tape the Milner segment, too. Spit. I hope you're right, kat, and they postponed it till next week (or even tomorrow?).

Sandy, I think I am. Our station reruns the show. They start it at 6am, then again at 8 or 9, can't remember. I heard the entire show, that I know of, both times.

It was in there! Just past Daniel Schorr, I think. Go to the NPR archive and you should be able to hear it there?

He was terrific! They did a nice intro, a bit of singing. Not nearly as long as one would have liked, but our guy sounded confident and songful and hopeful about the prospects of music in espressoland.

I just spent about 30 minutes slogging through the archived show -- no luck...the segment immediately after Shore was about Mozambique. I skipped around the show alot, but I think I would have caught Dan's segment if it was there. My guess is that the program is edited for regional variation -- Kat's station didn't have the segment, while Dani's did. Sorry I couldn't find it, I really wanted to hear. Congratulations on the spot anyway Dan!

I found it! It's not on "Weekend Edition," it's on "Weekend All Things Considered." CLICK HERE If the blue clicky thing doesn't work, go to www.npr.org/programs/wesat. Scroll down on the "select program" bar to "Weekend All Things Considered" and click on "Car Horns, Fog Horns, etc... Chanties at the Chelsea Piers." If a cyberklutz like me can find it, so can you!

P.S. Kat - I don't catch really large fish basically becase of where I fish. I caught a 5.5 lb. largemouth bass this Spring; that's somewhere between a titan and a monster in Connecticut but just an adolescent in Florida. It was a fair fight and my opponent earned and received her freedom but her vision is forever emblazened in my memory.

I heard the story. Today, I checked Lexis-Nexis, and the transcript is now available. Transcripts can be great fun, since they don't usually reflect the original very well, especially when music is involved. Here were my favorite parts:

SIMON: Enough of this chit-chat. Can we hear a song?
Mr. MILNER: I'd like to get one of The Johnson Girls, Dierdre Murtha, to lead us in the song.
SIMON: Sure.
Mr. MILNER: Dierdre?
(Soundbite of song)

And, a bit later:
