Subject: My Computer Don't Scream!

Oh man, I'm so happy. I just spent an hour replacing the power supply of the Pentium on the desk--and FINALLY it does not scream like a Hawker Hurricane doing a groundscrew from 20,000 feet. I thought it was noisy, but never knew how noisy until I just booted the old box and heard nothin but The Sound Of Silence.

What's that you say? This is supposed to be a music site? Well of course it is...now I can actually record into my sound card! I can edit sound files and hear (and remove) any nasty background hiss!

WHOOPEEEEEE!!!!!

Second best part is the price tag: zero $ and zero cents. Pulled the replacement outta the scrap metal pile at the dump!

One thing I like about the throwaway technology age: I bought a used 486/33 computer in 1995, and have never bought one since...but I've now replaced over 100% of the hardware. And it works great.

Granted it is non-musical, but we would honestly be interested in knowing the exact process step by step that you went through in un-installing and then replacing the power supply.

This is a component that everyone has to replace on their systems sooner or later, and it would be most advantageous knowing the process so that one could do it themselves, instead of paying a shop to do it, since the price of a new power supply itself is rather inexpensive.

This is a legitimate post. (Don't faint!)

TTCM - have you ever pulled a computer apart? They're really not that complex inside. With a phillips screwdriver and 30 minutes you can replace just about anything inside. If you've got even a shred of mechanical ability, you can figure it out just by looking.
Usually 3 to 5 screws hold the cover on the PC. 3 hold the power supply on the case. 2 connectors to the motherboard (pull the clip away from the connector, slide the connector out of the socket). 1 connector to each drive (floppy, CD, tape, etc). Put in the new power supply, making all the connections you took apart.
Make sure you've unplugged the thing before you open the case. Just to be safe, to avoid static discharge frying any of the components, keep some part of you body in contact with a metal part of the PC case the whole time.
All this is assuming you're working on some Intel type machine - I've never worked on anything Apple, so I don't know if the instructions would be the same.

After re-reading that last post, it looks rather condescending. It wasn't meant that way.

Out of curiosity, does it bother you to have to state things like "This is a legitimate post"?

It's better than people making 'illegitimate' posts and not bothering to state it.

Homeless, I wish they were always as easy as you make it sound. It has taken me 3 days to get my latest computer working properly. Anyway it seems to be flying now - quite a step up for me - from a P133 to a K2 500 and I am now glad I made the upgrade even if it caused me to curse and swear a few times.

So how come it's taken my Computer Programmer S/O 3 years to learn how to set the video to record the programme I want? And that's with the videoplus "just enter the numbers" thingy!!

Jeez, I thought this would be a self-indulgent 1-message thread, imagine my surprise.

Swapping a power supply is mega-less-complicated than doing an upgrade, because when you're only replacing one component, there is no mystery if something is wrong afterwards. One tool is required--a phillips screwdriver, and maybe a wire stripper or small pliers. The power connections for most powered internal components--hard & floppy drives & CD-ROMs are keyed and can't be inserted the wrong way. The only thing you can screw up massively, usually, is the side-by-side connectors on the motherboard. They can be hooked up wrong way for some reason, and this can blow your motherboard right quickly. You have to be pretty careless to do it though--and usually the two black wires go side by side in the middle. THE CRUCIAL THING: Just diagram everything, colour coded, before you pull the old one. You might have to splice or add in a connection for the skinny red & black wires that run to the CPU fan and the lights on the front panel. And the new power supply should be at least the wattage of the old one (they range from 200 for older ones, to 230 or 250).

Dang, I can't even tell when its on now!

There've I been assuming MCTT does all these posts in tiny because he or she gets some kind of kick out of it, or is making some kind of statement ("the stuff I write isn't worth reading" or maybe "I'm so important that you arseholes are going to go to all the trouble of reading this in spite of the way I've printed it, more fools you").

But maybe all the time it's hasn't been that at all, it's been because her or his computer is seriously disrupted...

Liz - Computer Programmers write the software. It's the users who actually have to run it. Big difference. Also, swapping out a power supply is a hardware problem.

Any further pearls of wisdom like that, Willie-O, self indulge away. Many people are using their computers, small and large, for the making of music. Tips like that can save people a fair bit of cash, cash which could be better spent on getting hold of the overly expensive software, and so help people realize their ambitions quicker.
