Subject: Odd little Steve Martin number.... From: BeauDangles Date: 10 May 00 - 12:59 PM I was killing some time this past weekend and happened across the Steve Martin film The Jerk on cable. (Man, let me tell you, that is one movie that just need to be seen uncensored!) At any rate, there is this really sweet little scene where Steve Martin & Bernadette Peters are walking along a beach at night singing the prettiest little duet. Steve is playing a ukelele, and during the bridge, Bernadette breaks out a trumpet and plays a solo! (I think she was actually playing it, too, judging by her finger motions.) It is a really sweet little song. I think it is called "You Belong to Me" or "Tonight You Belong to Me." Can anybody out there supply me with the words and chords? There is someone I would like to sing it to. Thanks, BeauD. P.S. After the song, they throw the ukelele on the campfire! Nonono! Just kidding about that part (see my other post, What was New is Old Again) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Odd little Steve Martin numbe From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 00 - 02:04 PM I just vaguely remember that movie, Beau. I was thinking of a girl group song, but couldn't find it. However, I wonder if it migh be Tonight You Belong to Me, recorded by Patience and Prudence (!), or maybe the Lennon Sisters Version. Good excuse to get out my girl group CD's and see if I can find it. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyr Add: TONIGHT YOU BELONG TO ME From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 00 - 02:14 PM Well, gee, I found this site called The Jerk - The Unofficial Homepage (click). I clicked on the link titled "Script", and here's what I found: I know, I know,Another resource says the song was written in 1926, words by Billy Rose and music by Lee David. Recorded in 1956 by Patience and Prudence. Billy Rose, former spouse of Fanny Brice, also wrote "DOES THE SPEARMINT LOSE ITS FLAVOR ON THE BEDPOST OVERNIGHT?." Fanny Brice, of course, was the original "Funny Girl." I can't get over the name of that group. They're probably undercover nuns, Sister Mary Patience and Sister Mary Prudence, dressed in civilian clothes and out to find out the secrets of men. -Joe Offer-

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MONEY TREE From: Allan C. Date: 10 May 00 - 03:22 PM Patience and Prudence would hardly have qualified to have been even novices, Joe. They were 11 and 14 years old when the recording was made.
But the really cool song was on the flip side of the old 45. It was this:
THE MONEY TREE
Pull up an easy chair and sit yourself down and lean back
Oh, the money tree, the money tree,
Well, it grows fresh new bills that crackle and snap.
So now you know about the people who live in the town of Greenback.
Oh, the money tree, the money tree, Well, I am relatively sure about that second verse but make no guarantees. I have never found it written down anyplace so I have no idea of the author. It is a good song. Remind me and I'll sing it for you sometime.

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Odd little Steve Martin numbe From: Allan C. Date: 10 May 00 - 03:50 PM Oh, BTW, the chords for "Tonight You Belong To Me" can be found here. Oh, on some recordings of the above song you'll find their other hit, "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" on the flip side. So now I am wondering if my mind is playing tricks on me...but I remember them as separate releases a few months apart with a song about learning French, something having to do with "the pen of my aunt is on the bureau of my uncle". And people, I know this ain't folk, but I know what I know. Sorta. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Odd little Steve Martin numbe From: BeauDangles Date: 10 May 00 - 06:22 PM Joe & Allan, you guys are amazing! As Ben Stein would say, "I bow to the Buddha nature in you!" You are both fountains of flowing wisdom. May your waters never cease! Thanks heaps! Beau |
Subject: Tonight You Belong To Me From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 00 - 06:49 PM Gee, Allan, you bring back memories! When we were engaged to be married, my ex-wife used to sing "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now," and I thought it was cute. Guess I shoulda seen the signs in advance, but I was a starry-eyed romantic. What can I say? Next time, I'll listen to Patience and Prudence. Click here for "Tonight You Belong to Me". -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Odd little Steve Martin numbe From: GUEST,Barry T Date: 11 May 00 - 03:13 PM Geez Joe! I didn't think anyone around here was old enough (like me) to remember that this was the Lennon Sisters' first hit. ;-) They sang it the first time they appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show. Mid 50's I'm guessing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Odd little Steve Martin numbe From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 May 00 - 03:28 PM If we are going to get onto a Steve Martin theme here, what about the lyrics to the cowboy song that he, Chevy Chase and Martin Short sang in 'The Three Amigos' - surely one of the best things they have ever done...... And then can we do 'All of me'? LTS |
