Hi

I would like to sing this song. But my Irish is v.poor.

Can anyone help (now this is a biggy) with a phoenetic version of the song please? I have the lyrics, but I need loads of help.

Here's hoping, either that or I have to back to school to refresh on my Gaelic.

Regards

E

Sorry this will not be much help, but isn't it on the CD Eist? I can't have a look for you as I am not at home and that CD is. I noticed your thread because I play the tune sometimes.

Roger

You're right, Roger, the song is sung by Mary Black on the CD "Éist, Songs In Their Native Language," on Dara Records. It's also on her own CD entitled "Collected", which you can find on the Dara Records site here.

And Ella, if you have some Irish AND the lyrics to this song, your best bet would be to get a recording of it and listen and practice singing with the singer. Writing out lyrics phonetically in any language is extremely difficult, and almost always leads to misunderstandings, since the way one person might "spell" a word and pronounce it can vary widely on how that word could be "read" and spoken by another person.

Besides, why not go back and revise your Irish? If you want to sing this song, you'll probably want to sing others in Irish, so go ahead and find a class and go for it!

Le meas, Áine

Check out The Chieftains album The Long Black Veil. There is a version of this song performed by Sting. The song, at least in part has been translated into English. This may be an option for you.

se mo laoch is possibly one of the most evocative and haunting songs as gailge ever written .My advise to anyone wishing to really experience an amhran seo properly would be to repair to Cul aodh in the Muscrai Gaeltacht of West Cork and maybe listen to Chor Cul aodh under the expert tutelage of Peadar o Riada ,son of Sean ,give the definite version. ALso while there attend Sunday mass and experience the magical O Riada mass as it was meant to be heard. Head out the western road from Cork city to Bhaile Bhuirne turn left over the bridge opposite An Mhuillean and discover that the pre Celtic Tiger Ireland still exists !!

Peter Byrne here again apologies for misspelling advice !! Would anyone out there be interested in starting a campaign to replace Amrhain na mFhain with Se mo laoch ? Peadar Kearneys words were good but the tune of Se mo laoch is much more stirring and would rise the blood at internationals better than Irelands call !! If Sting can do it i m sure Caleb Folan would have a stab at it . Mise le meas Peter Byrne

Hey, ever since I heard the song, as performed by Celtic Woman, (though I know its not the most traditional version), I've loved it. I think the way you all, have answered Ella's request is just plain, outstanding!...God Bless you all!

There are some English-language lyrics floating in my mind, to the tune of this song. The words that come to mind care something like, "Will ye na gae back again?" Or something like that - anybody have those lyrics? - or am I totally confused?
Hmmm. Closest I can come is Will Ye No Come Back Again - would you say that's the same tune as "Mo Ghile Mear"?

Sorry, eight years later... Is there anyone still there?
I don't see it either with WYNCBA.
But I *am* getting muddled between the tunes of MGM & The Parting Glass. Does anyone else have the same problem?
It is strange too that TPG and WYNCBA are both Scottish by origin.
