Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: meself Date: 27 Jul 12 - 01:11 PM Alec, thanks for showing up and chiming in! It's a terrific song - I don't believe I've heard it, although I do have a BIL album hidden away somewhere wherever it is all my vinyl is hidden away. Anyway - I'm going to start doing it. I like this: "This L is Y L - Canadian Version. I viewed this as being like General Motors (Canada) Limited" - I thought I was the only Cdn who felt that way .... If you feel like it, I'd be interested to know more about the BIL - although I grew up in Windsor, I don't think I ever heard of you guys until after I left (sorry!) - and even then, I never heard very much (sorry again). But I think when it came to music, Windsor never really celebrated its own - don't know if it's any different now. And maybe that's not your impression ... |
Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: Brother-in-Law Date: 27 Jul 12 - 11:09 AM Well Hi There - Brothers-in-Law fans (esp Clinton Hammond in Windsor, Ont - I'm Alec...) And bless you Supercanadian for entering the CORRECT lyrics to my 1966 song, recorded for Exposé '67. The title is actually THIS LAND IS WHOSE LAND? for obvious reasons. What happened is: Guthrie wrote his song in the '30's using the refrain from a Hymn - My Redeemer by James McGranahan, (1880's and so Public Domain) as the melody for his song. IT IS A BLOODY GOOD SONG for Americans, eh? But some Canadian or other changed all the US place-names and substituted Canadian ones and called it This L is Y L - Canadian Version. I viewed this as being like General Motors (Canada) Limited. It was recorded by Toronto group The Travellers, all nice guys, we did a gig with them once to support Ceasar Chavez in Tranna; but nevertheless, not a REAL Canuck song, I thought. So I wrote my version, we recorded it as the lead song on Exposé '67 and it went out to the stores. Next thing, mighty Chapell Music of New York took Arc Records to court in Ottawa and the Judge ordered it pulled. 3000 got out, if you have one, hang on... We pointed out Guthrie's use of the hymn, no good. Possibly it was the words which the Judge thought smelled of plagiarism, maybe Chappell had a higher-priced lawyer; if so why didn't Chappell have a go over The Travellers version? Probably because my version poked fun at their Mighty Land, eh? It was one of the best songs I ever wrote - sing the damn thing and to hell with the establishment, won't you? Sad part of this, is that while this was going on Woody Guthrie was lying terminally ill - a dreadful thing, from which he passed away. I have always thought that if I could have talked with him, none of it would have happened. But that's the way the ball bounced. Thanks for your support and check out Alec Somerville(me) on YouTube - you'll find it and other stuff there pout on by someone I don't know... And Put All Your Faith in The Pill... |
Subject: ADD: Put All Your Faith in the Pill From: GUEST,999 Date: 10 Oct 11 - 12:56 AM PUT ALL YOUR FAITH IN THE PILL The world population explosion Is making you feel rather ill The doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill So put all your faith in the pill Put all your faith in the pill The Doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill The pill is a birth control method It's the best one developed to date You get somebody's daughter To take one in water There's no mess and no time to wait. So put all your faith in the pill Put all your faith in the pill The Doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill It's been proven and tried by the Russians The Chinese now make them at home And it may not be true, But word has leaked through They are now being tested in Rome. (oh oh) So put all your faith in the pill Put all your faith in the pill The Doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill So throw out your old fashioned methods As you joyfully leap into bed You can take your saran wrap Back into the kitchen And use it for cooking instead So put all your faith in the pill Put all your faith in the pill The Doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill So here's to the boys in the back room The chemists whose faith will not die For they're working there still. On a birth control pill That's fifty percent Spanish Fly! So put all your faith in the pill -- Mom! Put all your faith in the pill -- Dad! The Doctors have said You can hop into bed And put all your faith in the pill -- tonight! |
Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: GUEST,cliffhuber Date: 10 Oct 11 - 12:50 AM I recall the song "Put all your faith in the pill", had been sung by the Windsor Firemen in the early 60s..probably on a recording...made regional if not provincial popularity. In February of 1966, Noah and the Aardvarks sang a version of this in the Lakehead University theatre. |
Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: GUEST,Bruce in Ottawa Date: 01 Jul 10 - 04:09 PM Mentioned earlier is the song "Put all your faith in the pill" I used to go to the Captain's Cabin on Sapring Garden Rd Hfx back in the early 60's and the house band used that in their set. The lyrics have stuck in my mind all these years, but I can't remember the name of the band and I never did know anything about them.I have questioned everyone I know and no one has been able to help me. Anyone from that era know them? |
Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: GUEST Date: 16 Mar 03 - 08:21 PM I should like to correct a couple of words of the song "This Land Ain't Your Land" made famous by the Brothers in Law...........I remember it well.... Instead of " While French and English were busy fighting..........." The correct words should be: "While French and English were busy vying.............."......... which rhymes with Us Investors were quitely "buying". Now, if I could find a copy of the record I would be most happy.....regards, Don F. ALdridge |

Subject: RE: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land' From: Mark Cohen Date: 09 Mar 03 - 02:26 AM In 1964, on a trip with my family, we went to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto (thread creep invitation warning: does that still exist?) I remember a musical group did a version of This Land. All I remember is the chorus (well, it was 40 years ago...): This land is your land, this land is my land From Nova Scotia to Vancouver Island From the Yukon forests to the Hudson Bay waters This land was made for you and me Not very imaginative, but I can vouch for the fact that it did exist. Subject: Add: Supercanadian 'This Land is Your Land From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 25 Sep 00 - 11:37 AM Su-Chong Lim (songwriter in Calgary) added a verse about the Chinese. I can't vouch for exact wording, and I may be missing a couple of lines, but it goes something like this: To build the railway, those CP stooliesNon-Chinese might find it difficult to pull off without running foul of PC, but when Su-Chong does it, it's hilarious. |

"This land is made for you and me." This land is your land This land is my land This Rule Brittania Steak and kidney pie land This land of Tory Of hope and glory This land, that's made for you and me As French and English Were busy fighting U.S. investors Were quietly buying We didn't spot it Until they'd bought it This land, that's made for you and me (slowly) This land ain't your land This land ain't my land This All-Canadian Pie in the sky land Though we bemoan it We still don't own it This land, that's made for you and me (spoken, in a Texas drawl) Attention, you all.
