I'm planning a motor trip, via Stranraer, along the Scottish West Coast, to the Highlands and probably, some of the more accessible Western Isles . Who knows if I will find good Scottish music and Gaelic language and where, exactly ? Will the roads be heavily trafficed at that time? What price range of B&B or small hotel should I find? I hav'nt been to Scotland .

Not sure I can be a huge help, but I love Skye and Mull (and Iona, just of Mull). Gaelic is spoken to some extent in all of the western isles. When we were in Skye in May, we stayed in a little B&B for £15/night. Booked it at a tourist information place in Fort William earlier in the day.

hi
go to skye, definitely. if you want a trip back in time, get out to harris/lewis...lots of neolithic stuff out there. B & B will be around £15-25 per person, but some times you can get a good deal.(best we had was £28 for room with breakfast for 2).
I'll be up there in july too, maybe we'll pass each other.
calach.

I've just been reading some interesting info. in the UK Culture and Tourism newsletter (almost under the category of *sheesh get a life*) but there's an articl, Scotland Reaps Rewards from Promoting Traditional Music to Tourists. There's a ref: to www.tmsa.demon.co.uk/tmsa/home/tmsa.html They might be of help too.

Beautiful part of the world... especially up around Fort William (Ben Nevis & Glen Nevis)... and Skye...

as for busy.. probably..... July & August are the UK and some of Europe's school holidays.... so people are likely to be on their summer holidays...... but it's still never too busy and there are plenty of places off the beaten track to get away from any crowds....

but you can't get away from the West Highland midgies anywhere......... (hungry little flies.... not as nasty as mosquitoes.. but very persistant)

Bed and breakfasts are always reasonable (if you stay away from big hotels).... and you save money because the breakfasts are so huge that you won't need lunch....

Shhhhh...

We don't mention the midges to *potential* visitors...

In the Islands the midges get so large they don't bite, they just knee you and take your wallet..

Cheers

LOL... true enough

you just keep them as a little surprise.. and added extra? a bonus to the Scottish ambience????

you'll note that I kept my other bit of secret information to myself...... the fact that Ben Nevis, and anything above 10 feet above ground level (hence all the mountains in Skye)... are a bit like the Loch Ness monster.. not many people actually get to see them.. I think they're all Scottish myths myself...... the postcards are the only way I ever got to see them *grin*

Please take in Loch Trool just an hour or so from Stranraer...This is where Robert The Bruce inflicted his first defeat on the English on his return from hiding in the caves ...remember the spider story ??? It is in a lovely part of Scotland known as BRUCE & BURNS country so often bypassed by people on their travels from the South. And as you are going so far north dont miss Ullapool.Safe journey to you & yours Bill

One of my very favorite countries. Isle of Skye is unbelievably beautiful. If you are adventurous, go to the north tip and visit Flora MacDonalds grave. You may find Scottish music at the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool. If you bump into GABERLUNZIE tell them I was asking about them. I wish I were going with you!! Two trips over there are not enough.

Balnain House in Inverness! Traditional music centre right on the banks of the Ness... regular concerts and tuition sessions, and in the café downstairs open sessions at least one evening per week... altho' you'd better check if that is still the case.

I'm amazed I forgot... good recorded music store on the ground floor too...

If ye visit Flora's grave on Skye, take yer wellies if it's rainin'. Last time I was there the "Wee Frees" widnae cut the grass within a thirty-foot radius!! [Prince Chairlie fans are a wee minority on Skye---]
