Subject: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: bbelle Date: 29 Jul 00 - 01:51 AM Many times in my life someone has said to me ... "Jenny, did you know ...?" and whatever it was they told me, was always a bit of information or trivia that I'm convinced I needed to know. The "did you know's" have been about everything imaginable, e.g., life, music, the universe, the mundane, and the list goes on. The "did you know's" have gotten less and I'm afraid I'm missing out on important information, so, I will start off ... Did you know? ... that Rick Fielding coined the phrase "Blue Clicky Thing" because he was fairly new to computers and they were popping up in posts and he didn't know what to call it. That was over two years ago and it is now the most-favored-term for the blue clicky thing. moonchild |
Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: campfire Date: 29 Jul 00 - 01:56 AM Rick also coined the term "flunderblunking" - which is STILL one of my favorite words. |

Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: kendall Date: 29 Jul 00 - 08:27 AM I wonder where THIS thread will end up? |
Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: bbelle Date: 29 Jul 00 - 10:17 AM Well ... it could end up silly (which wouldn't be a bad thing) ... or we could actually learn a thing or two about each other (which wouldn't be a bad thing either). Ok ... Did you know .... that the face on the tail of an Alaska Airlines plane is not a picture of Don Ho when he had an afro in the 70's ... it is the picture of an Eskimo. moonchild |
Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 Jul 00 - 10:56 AM Did you know...that after Peter T. and Tony Burns showed me HOW to do a "blue clicky" (yes I admit it was my phrase..just as Sandy lived to regret suggesting "BS" as a designation) it only took me two weeks to FORGET how to do it again. Flunderblunker Fielding However I didn't coin the words "furannablaster" or "freep" to describe huge and tiny farts. |
Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: campfire Date: 29 Jul 00 - 11:09 AM Rick, some of the "gentlemen" I work with have developed a whole vocabulary to describe various forms of flatulence. However, neither "furannablaster" or "freep" are in it. Perhaps those are regional variations? ;) campfire |

Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: Alice Date: 29 Jul 00 - 03:31 PM Did you know that "Don't Fence Me In" was really written by a man in Roundup, Montana, and sold to a song buyer working for Cole Porter (for $20). I called into Larry King's radio show once to mention this, and after he and Arlo Guthrie joked about my name, he bacame irate that I would even suggest such a thing. Well, my family knew the man who wrote it. (Do you think Cole Porter would even know what a cayuse was until someone told him?) Anyway, believe me or not, I swear it's true. My actual question was going to be whether Woody Guthrie had ever had to sell songs that are now publshed with someone else's name on them, but I got cut off before I could ask that question. |

From: Downeast Bob Date: 29 Jul 00 - 09:26 PM Speaking of lobster, did you know that along the Maine coast, the major part of lobsters' diets, until they are big enough to keep, is the bait they find in lobster traps? Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: sophocleese Date: 29 Jul 00 - 09:49 PM Sinsull, thanks for saying it was a "Classic" champagne glass. I get the oddest image of Marie Antoinette and goats mixed when I remember that story and see the long, thin, narrow champagne glasses. Did you know that when you pack a car trunk, box or moving truck if you pack the biggest things first its easier to pack everything? Are you listening Allan C.? If you pack the heavy things in small boxes and the light things in big boxes you should get boxes you can lift by yourself. |

Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Jul 00 - 01:36 AM Did you know that the first country to give the vote to women was New Zealand. Thomas Hardy the novelist was so mean that if he was going out of a room for longer than 30 mins, he put the fire out to save coal. He also designed his own house with no inside toilets. Richard the Third did not kill the princes in the tower even though history books still report that he did. It was Henry Tudor, and the truth was made public almost as soon as Elizabeth I was dead.... LTS |

Subject: RE: DID YOU KNOW ... ? From: Little Neophyte Date: 30 Jul 00 - 05:05 PM Did you know that.......... Albert Einstein was 4 years old before he could speak. Beethoven's music teacher once said of him, "As a composer, he is hopeless," When Thomas Edison was a youngster, his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. He was counselled to go into a field where he might succeed by virtue of his pleasant personality. F.W. Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21, but his employer would not permit him to wait on customers because he "didn't have enough sense to close a sale." Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Bob Cousy suffered the same fate. A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas." Winston Churchill failed Grade 6 and had to repeat it because he did not complete the tests that were required for promotion. Babe Ruth struck out a record 1,300 times. Yet somewhere along the road of life, we end up meeting someone who sees greatness in us, expects it from us and lets us know it. It is the golden key to success.
