Excuse me if I'm repeating bad news that's already been reported here, but an Associated Press story scheduled for release Sunday on the history of "The House of the Rising Sun" includes a note that Allan Lomax, who collected the song from Georgia Turner of Middlesboro, Ky., among others, has suffered a stroke and was unavailable for comment. Kind thoughts and a virtual Mudcat tribute concert might be in order.

Pinetop, do you know any more about his condition?

I will certainly keep him in my thoughts and meditations and I think the idea of a virtual tribute concert is wonderful. We should do it live in HearMe. How about it Mudcatters?

Allan Lomax suffered a stroke a while ago ( a year or so) it was reported in Froots ; we are sorry to hear that he has had another. A man of wonderful enthusiasm without whose influence the folk music scene today would be infinitely poorer. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Dr John

I guess I'm ignorant. I thought he had passed on. I am very relieved to hear Alan Lomax is still with us and send wishes for a very speedy recovery. Any more info would be welcome also. Kindest reguards, Neil

If Mr. Lomax has had another stroke, that is indeed sad news. I had not heard anything about a new stroke. I do hope that it is the earlier one you are referring to. In Memphis, 2 years ago for the Folk Alliance yearly conference, he was in a wheelchair and generally disabled. I was in a wheelchair too and I challenged him to a race across the hotel lobby. I thought I detected a smile.

While looking for updated info, I found this, which is from 1996. Have any of you seen this multimedia database, "The Global Jukebox," which is mentioned?

I do not believe this is a second stroke. The AP piece referred to it as something that had happened. This is in all probability the same stroke to which Dr. John and Art Thieme are referring.
I suspected the stroke might be old news, but wanted to take no chance that Mr. Lomax's condition would go unnoticed at Mudcat, considering all that he has contributed to folk music.
I've cussed him the way my motherinlaw cusses Michael "he gets too much credit" Jordan. And the comparison is apt: among collectors Lomax is the Jordan, the greatest of the greats.
Mr. Lomax should feel comfortable about his legacy without any reassurance from the likes of me. Still, experience tells me he'd be comforted to know that folk fans of today know that he delivered as much of the goods as anybody.
If the inept phrasing of my initial posting were to be cause of a rumor I would be quite distressed. -- Pinetop Slim
