Subject: Guitars in art From: Mooh Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:13 PM Thanks in advance for your input. In searching for art (sketches, paintings, murals, photography, sculpture...) of guitars I have found some great stuff, but there doesn't seem to be much variety. I suspect I'm not looking far enough, but I'm wondering if anyone in Mudcatville knows of guitar pictures worthy of display. I'd like to spice up my little music room. There's lots of great album cover art depicting guitars, but I'm thinking more of large prints and posters suitable for framing. There are many guitars themselves which are art in and of themselves (IMHO) and I've got pictures of many, and I not so secretly would love to own some too. I am also considering asking an artist friend to (for her price) create something for me, though it's likely a bit beyond my means at present. I'm not bigoted any particular way about style (I think), I'm just trying to improve my environment. Some of my guitar students already respond to guitar pictures, them being as obsessive as any other enthusiast. Guitars in art, suggestions anyone? Thanks. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Dave Swan Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:57 PM Picasso springs to mind. You might also want to do a search on the work of Grit Laskin. His guitars are objects of art in themselves, and if you could find photos of his work, you would have something quite nice for your wall. Dave |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Alice Date: 23 Sep 00 - 01:05 PM Mooh, I have a guitarist painting in my portfolio. Send me a personal message, if you'd like, of dimensions you want, price range. |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Mooh Date: 23 Sep 00 - 02:17 PM Dave, Thanks. I've seen several Picassos, some are at art.com. I'm familiar with Grit's work and it's fantastic. Just photos of his guitars trigger me to drool. Alice, I'm interested, but for some reason I can't get a PM through. I'll try later. I hadn't been thinking of size, but under 3'x 2' I guess. Price? Well, I hadn't thought of that either. Being a musician more or less means I don't think of money, much to my detriment. I better talk with my good and generous wife/keeper of the treasury about that. Thanks! Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Willie-O Date: 24 Sep 00 - 10:38 AM Saw a guitar model of Picasso's a couple of years ago. My eight year old was so fascinated he immediately sat down on the National Gallery floor and sketched Picassos guitar--did a credible job too! I've played guitars that were more exciting sounding, but don't think there's anything comparable to the sight of my 1973, rather plain Martin O-18 hanging on the wall. Sometimes I just sit and stare at it. Proportions are just right. Elegance. W-O |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: GUEST,John Bauman Date: 24 Sep 00 - 11:05 AM Saw a pretty cool idea--more sculptural than 2-D but still for hanging on the wall. Someone had taken several garage sale/flea market beater guitars and painted them decoratively--several on a wall, different color themes heavy on graphics (though not op-artish). I'd just make sure I wast accidentally defacing a vintage collectable! :=) John |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Sep 00 - 11:15 AM As Dave said, Grit Laskin's guitars are often works of art and I recall a picture that was used in the Luthier's Mercantile catalog supplement last year that was really beautiful and unique. You might contact them and see if its available for a print or something. Their addy is in the "Instrument Related" section of the links. In that same vein, you could fing a book done a few years ago (10 maybe now) on Danny Ferrington in California. Some beautiful pictures there that might be available. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Mooh Date: 24 Sep 00 - 04:42 PM Thanks folks! I've been scootin' 'round the net for more images. I've got lots of guitar books (Martin, Fender, blue books, history, coffee-table books etc) from which I may scan more images for collages. And I've got an old beater, plywood 70's Asian piece of uselessness which might get a treatment. Alice of Mudcat responded to my request in the best possible way. I will purchase a print from her. If you haven't seen her art, you're missing something wonderful and important here. You can find her site through the links. She also has provided solid advice. I wish I could commission a piece of art right now! Art and music are closer than we think! Mooh.

Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: rangeroger Date: 24 Sep 00 - 08:26 PM Mooh, you might also try Musician's Friend. They have a section of desktop wallpaper that is really fantastic with a new one each week. Scroll down to the Fun Zone and click on desktop wallpaper, then click on wallpaper archive. There's some pretty good art there. I haven't been able to refine my blue clicky thing ability to get you all the way there, but I can get you to the website. rr |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Mooh Date: 02 Oct 00 - 02:33 PM Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I am collecting images for a mural and scouting around for prints. The best thing arrived just this afternoon in the mail. Alice, of Mudcat, known to many of us here, sent a print of her own and it is very good. I'm quite taken with it, so it will have a place in my music room where I can see it all the time. Isn't this place great! Don't forget to check Alice's site. Mooh. |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Pinetop Slim Date: 02 Oct 00 - 05:44 PM Mooh: One of the museums in Boston is now running an exhibit on the guitar as art. I can't remember which museum it is, but there was a fairly large ad in the Boston Sunday Globe and if you go to boston.com you'll probably find a listing. Even if Boston's too far out of your way, the museum's probably got something posted on its website and would be willing to send you a brochure from the show. |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 03 Oct 00 - 09:53 AM for the web page on the guitar exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. I hope I'll be able to get there- it looks to be fascinating! |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Grab Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:26 PM John Lennon had a guitar done with an Japanese enamel inlay on the front - worth a few bob now, I believe. Grab. |
Subject: RE: Guitars in art From: Mooh Date: 05 Nov 00 - 11:51 AM A short reprise... The Fall 2000 issue of Guitar World Acoustic has a one page article about the Boston Museum of Art exhibit "The Art of Guitar" with a few pictures. The exhibit runs until 25 Feb 2001. Peace. Mooh. |
