Can anyone point me in the direction of the Irish words (and, hopefully, a translation into English) to this song? I've got it on the album "Sail Og Rua" by Dolores Keane and John Faulkner, and love the tune, but would like to know what they're singing about... thanks. Margaret

THÚAS AG GORT A CHÁRNÁIN

Agus thúas ag Gort A Chárnáin
Tá áilne ban Éireann
'San té a gheobhadh ó nas máthair í.
Budh lághach í le bréagadh
A's og dtug mo chroidhe grádh di le páirt de'n dithchéille
'S d'éaluigh sí leis an táilliúr uaim
'Sé ránaidhe fear Éireann

Tá mo ghrádh mar bhláth na náirne
bhíos ag fás i dtús an tsamhraidh
Nó mar na faoileáiní bána
bhíos ag snámh ar na gleanntaibh.
Nó mar bhéadh grian ós cionn Chárnáin
Ins na sráide ag gabháil tímpeall
A's mar siúd a bhíos mo ghrádh bán
Ag déanamh rábhailte thrí m'intinn

Éireofidh mé amárach
Le fáinne an lae ghléghil
A's déanfaidh mé mo dheaghrás
Amach faoi na sléibhte.
Fághfaidh mé mo bheannacht
Ag mnáibh deas an tsaoghail seo
A's dheanmhan a bhfillidh abhaile dhiom
Go mbeidh an barr ag clainnaibih Éireann.

Sorry, I don't have a translation at the moment, but I hope this can help you anyway.

All the best, Angun

Dear Margaret,

Here's the translation I have from Amhráin Mhuighe Seóla:

Above at Gorthacarnaun
Lives a fair Irish lady
And he who will get her from her mother
Must be a kindly love
And my fond heart gave love to her
With some infatuation
But she abandoned me for the tailor
The weakling of the men of Erin

My love is like the sloe bud
That blooms in early summer
Or like the snow-white seagulls
That poise above the valleys
Or like the sun o'er Carnaun
Dancing in the street around
So does this bright love of mine
Keep roving through my reason

I will rise tomorrow
With the dawning of bright day
And I will make a swift race
Out around the hills
And I will leave my blessing
To the fair maids of this world
And never will I return home
Till Erin's cause has triumphed.

There is another verse in Amhráin Mhuighe Seóla that is written as the second verse:

Ní shiubhalfaidh mé níos mó ar
Na bóithribh seo agaibhse
Ach tógfaidh mé mo sheólta
Amach faoi na sléibhtibh
Ólfaidh mé mo dhóthain Dia Domhnaigh
'S ní béidh mé ar meirge
Mar shúil go bhfághainn blas do phóigín
'S tú mo stóirín, a bhláth na finne!

And I shall walk no more on
These rugged roads of yours
But I shall hoist my sails
And speed me towards the mountains
I will drink my fill on Sunday
And yet I will be sober
In hope of tasting your little kiss
For you are my treasure, my fair blossom

Thank you very much indeed, Angun, Aine, and elf, for all your (speedy) help! Aine, when was the song collection you referenced published? Margaret

Dear Margaret,

It was first published in 1923 (by Talbot Press), and then published again in 1990 (by Cló Iar-Chonnachta Teo.).
