I had not been out of the house all day, so Rog took me for a short drive up against the foot of the mountain, just at dusk, when the big-eared mule deer literally line the road, getting some last minute snacking in before bedding down, either in the way of grass or handouts from people driving up to see them.

There were bucks ambling along antlers held high in sedate pride; does grabbing a few last bites here and there while busily keeping an eye on their fawns, white tails flicking messages back and forth. Oh! The fawns! They've lost their spots by now and grown some, but they still are small compared to their elders and their little legs still look so spindly. They are growing up though, you can tell they know the ropes; where the best bits of nibblies might be and the wary ways of soliciting from carloads of two-leggeds.

The beauty of these gentle creatures, the scent of the fresh mountainy air, the chill of seasonal changes, the deep brown of their eyes, all knowing and accepting of their Creator, struck me. My heart felt pierced and I cried out to Rog, sobbing through my tears, that I have to get back out to where we can be at one with nature, with our Mother the earth.

I've been wrapped up in health issues, moving to a different house soon, and a myriad of other things for which life seems to require my attention on a daily basis. I intend to let go, and let go some more, until I can find a rhythm of peace, a rhythm of life, a rhythm which matches that of the Earth and her creatures and I shall also be at peace. This evening was a brief glimpse of that At-One-Ness, which I've known before in my life, and I intend to pay attention.

Well Kat, sure sounds like a good sign to me. It is kind of hard to feel moved & connected when you are knee deep in personal stuff to deal with.
It shows much has cleared for you and that the sun is once again shining through on your life.

Kat, there is a great rush of emotion connected with the earth that too many in the wide world have lost sight of. Too many of us get into that "self" place and lose touch with that wider world. I don't mean the news but the real, simple world of beauty and grace. Thanks for reminding us that there is something else out there.

(Of course, after this weekend I am open to all kinds of emotions and happiness. See my thread "Gordon Bok This Weekend".)

Thanks Kat -- I needed that. It reminds of Fort Flagler State Park in Puget Sound, where I was recently for a hurdy-gurdy festival. There are half-tame deer wandering around the site. They give one the idea that every movement is a deliberate act of grace.

I just had a very bad couple of days at work. I advocated and participated in the firing of a friend, a person I've been working closely with for six years. It's really nice to pull my head out of that for a few minutes and be with the deer instead.

kat, just to say apropos of yesterday that I always read your TFTD and enjoy them -- it is just that I now read them two days later, or whenever. Which is similar to why I haven't been able to do the weekday versions, and can't say when they will rev back up again. But yours are always welcome.
I turned around in an autumnal woodlot by a field the other day where I had been quietly sitting watching the birds and came right face to face with a deer about 1 yard away -- hard to know whether she was more surprised than I was -- but I know who got away fastest -- zoom.

we've had a lot of rain, but just the other day, it was a beautiful sunny evening, and as I drove by the local base, which has a population of white deer, many of them, more then I have seen in years, were out "snacking" A very Lovely sight

Thanks again, Kat. I guess it's that Yin/Yang thing. You know, keeping balance in your life. Here close to Chicago it's hard to find a really quite spot. Even trying to disappear to the "wilds" of Wisconsin it almost never fails that, just about the time you feel you've gotten away, a plane flies overhead. . .Oh well.

Enjoy what is shaping up to be a very fine fall day.

There's this really cool deer skeleton on the side of the road along Highway 13 near the Ayden turnoff. I gotta go take a picture of it...definately asymmetry!

We spent this weekend at our get-away home in the country. When I pulled into our lane and got out to unlock the gate I saw two deer at the edge of our beaver pond. They turned and bounded back into our hollow, flashing their white flags at me as they disappeared back into the brightly-colored hardwoods. A great way to begin a restful weekend!

There is a large wooded area in the rear of our property near Orillia, and there are numerous deer in there. Occasionally I am lucky enough to see one or two. There is also a family of 3 foxes...beautiful little things...at the vacant lumber company next door, and I often see them in the early evening, sometimes before they see me. When they do, one of them barks, and then they quickly take to cover. Very neat little creatures. There are also numerous rabbits, but I don't think they care too much for the foxes. Can you relate to this, Lepus Rex?
