From: Peter Kasin

I'm wondering what became of the long defunct Washington label LPs. I'm looking for a Ewan MacColl/A.L. Lloyd album, "Whaling Ballads" and am wondering if it has been reissued on CD. A forum search for "Washington label" reveals that Washington had reissued Riverside's catalogue. Our local public library had a Washington label copy of it, which I used to check out whenever it was in, back in the late 70s. I didn't tape it, and it either got discontinued from the library collection, or somebody permanently checked it out. It holds a special place with me, because it was my introduction to sea music, and it remains my favorite sea music album. I have several other recordings of sea music they made together, plus A.L. Lloyd's "Leviathan," all wonderful recordings, but I cannot find this one. If anyone can tell me if "Whaling Ballads" is availabe on CD or cassette, I'd be very grateful.

A sort of companion piece you might be interested in is Folkways FS3850. MacColl, LLoyd, and Peggy Seeger singing 9 songs on 'Whaler out of New Bedford'. The Fitting Out/Boney/The Bark Gay Head/The Boston Come-all-ye/The Coast of Peru/Mary Ann/Desolation/A Hundred Years on the Eastern Shore/Homeward Bound .

I'm familiar with that one - the soundtrack for the panorama of a whaling voyage. That's a gem! I'm looking for info on this one particular album, though. But thanks again.. There are many great albums by them, in and out of circulation.

I've got a MacColl/Lloyd CD by the name "Blow Boys Blow" released on the Tradition label. Looking at woodenshipsmusic.com, I find "English Drinking Songs" and "Leviathan" from Lloyd... also, "Round Cape Horn" with MacColl, Lloyd, Tawney & Killen. No "Whaling Ballads" though...

Dunno... does anyone else have a link or clue?

Is this the Riverside RLP 12-635 "Thar She Blows!- Whaling Ballads and Songs": LLoyd/McColl/Peggy Seeger on banjo & J. Cole, Harmonica?? with 'Sperm Whale Fishery', 'Blood Red Roses', 'Farewell to Tarwathie'.... etc? If no luck elsewhere, send me a PM & we can work something out if a tape from my far-from-perfect vinyl would suffice..

Best, Greg

It shows up on ebay periodically. Too rich for my blood - I believe the last one sold for about $30.

The Washington label appeared on several Riverside re-releases. I haven't found the one you're looking for, but leviathan, Blow Boys Blow, Paul Clayton's Whaling Songs, Round Cape Horn, and a mess of other whaling and sea music material are all available at Camsco Music. Inquire at 800/548-FOLK or E-mail at dick@camsco.com

I have that one. :-)

Most all of MacColl's sailing records
("1" means sung by MacColl, "2" is by Lloyd)

Sometimes MacColl had the same cut reissued, especially for the other country. Often he cut several different versions of the same song.

Thank you all very much! Yes, Abby Sale, WLP 724's contents match what I'm looking for. Same, I assume, as your post, Greg F (Riverside LP, under a slightly different title).

Thank you for your offers! Bullytanana - sounds like you know me. I can't link your Mudcat name with the real you. Do you know me from the chantey sings? Send me a PM, okay? Thanks!

What a site this Mudcat is (prescriptive grammarians, just ignore that). Thank you all, again, for your help.

I thought you were Greg! The only other Rogue I know is Jan. So, that means you're either...well, I won't blow your cover. Anyway, a PM is a Personal Message, one of the features of membership. Just go to the "personal pages" link at the top of the page, and click it on. It will then prompt you on your options. You can send a message to another mudcat member, view the messages you've sent or received, delete or archive (save) old messages. I got an offer on the tape through a PM, but thank you! Are you a new member? If so, consider starting a new thread, introducing yourself.

Bullytanana is a modest man of few words. He has been involved in the maritime music scene in NYC since the late 1960s. He sings with The New York Packet, the official music group at South Street Seaport Museum along with all of The Johnson Girls, and Dan Milner & Bob Conroy. And, to prarphrase that great old song, "for Ireland I'd not tell his name."

All the best,
Dan

"Whaling Ballads" has popped up on the iTunes Store. It contains the A.L. Lloyd "Greenland bound" I have been looking for tbese 20 years ever since my dad's taped version of it came too close to a magnet, a version far better than the one on "Leviathan".
The iTunes "Whaling Ballads" however I have only listened to in preview: the audio quality is miserable, seemingly straight from a very worn and scratched LP. I dare not buy it for now.
