Subject: Bert Lloyd's 1990 Memorial Concert
From: GUEST
Date: 11 Jun 06 - 05:00 PM

In digging up information about Ann Briggs, I keep coming across the fact that she sang at a memorial concert for Bert Lloyd in 1990. Can anyone give me more information about this concert? Where was it held? What did she sing? If anyone who was there could give some anecdotes, that would be great.

TIA for help and advice on where to dig deeper,

GwenZ

yes she did sing at the memeorial but not sure of the year.... it was a rare appearance from her reclusiveness but I don't have the details. She sang, briefly again, in the early 1990s and was interviewed in the Folk Britannia series...

Thanks, Derek. I'll ask Malcolm tomorrow; he might know.

Dave Bryant would have known, so Essex Girl might. Slats might know too.

My memory may be playing tricks, but I think the concert was at the Mermaid Theatre in London (Herga made a block booking), and Frankie Armstrong also sang.

Have spoken this evening to Tim Edwards, who also thought that the Bert Lloyd memorial concert was at the Mermaid Theatre. He also remembers Ann Briggs singing at the National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonington (so do I, but I thought it was later than the early 90s).

I don't know about a 1990 Bert tribute concert, but I do know that there was one in June 1987. It was held in the Greenwich Borough Hall as part of a Greenwich festival. Artists were MacColl & Seeger, Martin Wyndham Read, Dave & Toni Arthur, and a Ukranian group. I MC'd and sang. Good value for £3.50.

Peta Webb is also sure it was at the Mermaid Theatre; I have an email out to Ken Hunt; she thinks he would definitely remember. If I find the answer, I'll post it here. :) Thanks, everybody, for all the help.

And burl-- that *is* great value for £3.50!

I got a reply from Ken, who says the handbill he has for this concert gives the date as Sunday, 9 October, which would have put it in 1989, at the Mermaid Theatre. He doesn't have any set list information for the gig, unfortunately.

Sunday 9 October would put it in 1988, not 1989!

Hm, that's the way it comes out when I check it too-- back to the drawing board, I guess!
