Subject: A message to Ewan McVicar From: GUEST Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:10 AM Ewan--I hope you see this message and respond. My name is Nick and I live in Colorado in the USA. I am in the process of creating a website dedicated to various Irish and Scottish ballad singers and groups, such as Hamish Imlach, Alex Campbell, Iain Mackintosh, Hall & MacGregor, Matt McGinn and the Corries. I mentioned the Scottish performers because I have less information on them. You're clearly an expert on this subject and I would appreciated any help from you. Please email me at oxbownick1@warp8.com. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: A message to Ewan McVicar From: Murray MacLeod Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:19 AM Guest, most of the performers you mention are dead. Is this going to be an "In Memoriam" site? If so don't forget to include Belle Stewart and Jeannie Robertson as well. Murray |

Subject: RE: A message to Ewan McVicar From: Susanne (skw) Date: 04 Jan 01 - 08:20 PM Nick, you might also want to look at Nigel Gatherer's site. He has some material on the people you mention. Also, a recent article on Iain MacKintosh (by me - BLUSH!) can be found at href=http://www.folkworld.de/15/e/iain.html>FolkWorld. If you think I can help you further, eMail me at skw@worldmusic.de. |

Subject: Sow Song - Ewan McVicar Version From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 01 - 09:53 PM Well, I want to see if we can get Ewan back for an answer to another pressing question. In my recent travels of the Eastern United States, I had the privilege of hearing the "Old Sow Song" sung by both Bert AND Ewan. Now, Bert's version is in the database (click), and he even gave us cheat sheets so we'd be able to understand what he was singing (for what it was worth). What Ewan sang sounded completely different - but I couldn't tell whether this was due to a difference in the words, the accent, the grunts and whistles, or all of the above. So, Ewan, dear friend, in all humility, I ask if you could point us to the lyrics you used, or post them if they're different from what's here. While both Bert and Ewan did a wonderful job of the song, I have to say that Ewan's grunts and whistles were far more credible. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: A message to Ewan McVicar From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 08 Jan 01 - 03:52 AM Joe, What I like about the version I have is that it is so different! I got it in manuscript from working on Volume 8 of the Greig Duncan Collection, due out some time this year. Whenever I can I'll put something on paper and post it - the tune varies quite a bit from what I think of as the English version - Suffolk or somewhere like that? I'll look at the database to see what's there. Best regards, keep on keeping on. Ewan |
Subject: Hello Ewan McVicar From: GUEST,A Bow Street Irregular Date: 06 Mar 03 - 12:12 AM The world,I think, has shrunk.Recently,I came across your name on some threads hereabouts and am thinking you are THE Ewan I remember, fondly, from the middle 60's and many sessions at Jack Parmley's little place on Mt.Auburn St.,with much music and more than a few glasses. The "Bow Street Irregulars"(in the likely event you've forgotten, understandably)was Jack's name for our raggedy group---"young"Tom K.,Jim W.,and, myself,Dave W..It seems like it was only 36 years ago.---"did you ever see such a servant of the Lord?"-oh,that was good--hope you're well and enjoying yourself. If you are THE Ewan, please confirm, thanks. |
