Subject: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: GUEST,The Doer of Things Date: 12 Jan 01 - 08:36 PM Alas, my Lady, the Goer of Places, has today been diagnosed with CTS. She has suffered greatly. Do any of the Mudcat members have this affliction? How do you cope? Do any of you employ holistic or homeopathic remedies? Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, The Doer of Things |

Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Charcloth Date: 12 Jan 01 - 09:55 PM A medical massage therapist can do wonders for CTS. But Simple stretching exercises can make a drastic difference. I had some physical therapy which helped. But I think the massage therapy is the most effective corse I have experienced. Good luck |

Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Hotspur Date: 12 Jan 01 - 11:10 PM Ultrasound (deep heat) therapy worked well for me...the wrist braces were useless. Other than warm washcloths wrapped around my wrist (how's that for alliteration?) I don't have any homeopathic remedies to offer. Ben-Gay is good but smelly. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Sorcha Date: 12 Jan 01 - 11:36 PM I know there was another thread not too long ago about this with a lot of suggestions, but I can't find it. SS seems to be down.........(I have it, had surgery, did/do exercises, nothing seems to help except anti-inflammatories and rest. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: GUEST,Mark. West Sussex. UK Date: 12 Jan 01 - 11:41 PM You are lucky to have the diagnosis. I suffered with increasing numbness in both hands and was told it was of arthritic origin. Luckily, after eight years I came across a neurologist with sense. Have the operation when the permanent numbness becomes intrusive. It is quick, local anaesthetic, painless, heals rapidly and is heavenly afterwards. I went out one morning to touch a frosted window pane for the sheer joy of feeling it melt beneath warm skin for the first time in years. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Jimmy C Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:08 AM I know a few people with it, it can be quite painful. I don't know if this works but I have a acquaintance who wraps a fresh eel skin round his wrists, something in the oil apparently helps ease the condition. This plus exercise seems to work for a while . Ben Gay also helps, just don't get it mixed up with your Preparation H. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: GUEST,Thom M. at work Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:18 AM Surgery relieved most of the problem for me. I stil have a problem with power tools as the vibration bring back the numbness. Hope thet you find somehting that works. Thom M. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Sooz Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:00 PM The pain in the middle of every night was like wearing burning boxing gloves and NOTHING would make it go away. The surgery worked like a charm - I had it under local anaesthetic so I could keep an eye on things. No recurrence even after 8 years! |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: SINSULL Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:34 PM If it is computer related, there are some new mouses (mice?) developed to prevent CTS. |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Haruo Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:49 PM I think we should spell it "meiss" so we know which kind we're typing about. And I don't think those new meiss prevent it, they're just designed to make it a little less easy to get. Liland |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Cap't Bob Date: 13 Jan 01 - 03:19 PM I have CPS in both hands. An operation was performed on my right wrist and while I was waiting for that one to heal the left wrist got better without the surgery. Apparently the long period of rest was also quite effective. I still have some problems, however as soon as I feel any numbness I change what I'm doing (ex. play a different instrument). There is a simple little exercise that seems to give some temporary relief. Hold the arm out with the palm up ~ then rotate it to palm down. Repeat this procedure around ten times. Another that also gives temporary relief is to take the palm of one hand and push the fingers of the other hand back until resistance is felt. There are special gloves for activities such as bike riding that are padded in such a way that reduces pressure on the nerve that causes cps. Cap't Bob |
Subject: RE: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questions From: Whistleworks Date: 13 Jan 01 - 03:56 PM As a poor whistle player but a darned good surgical physician assistant, I would be interested in how they got to the diagnosis. Was it by EMG? If not, I would suggest that you get one, since this really is a good diagnostic tool. Then, if this confirms CTS, then go to a good hand surgeon. Neurosurgeon? Not really. Orthopedic surgeon? No. General surgeon? No. Hand surgeon. Usually is an orthopod but specializes in hands. Get someone who knows of Harold Kleinert. That will be the ticket. And then, get the surgery. No amount of homeopathic stuff or PT is going to stop the compression on the median nerve by the transverse carpal ligament. A knife will. It is a simple procedure, and, in the right hands (pardon the pun), the surgery works miracles. Good luck to you. |
