Greetings:

I am now the publicity chairperson for the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club (Folk Music Society of New York, Inc.) and I intend to use this thread to publicize club activities. Your comments and feedback, good, bad or in-between, are most welcome.

Let me begin by saying that Pinewoods is a club in the sense of a membership organization, rather than a night club or similar venue where folk music can be heard. We do sponsor folk music events throughout New York City, and these inc concerts, workshops, open microphones, jam sessions, and so forth. Some of these are one-time events, but others are parts of a series or else are events which repeat monthly. We also sponsor three weekend retreats each year at a camp out of the city.

For more information, please do any or all of the following:

Check our website by clicking HERE!

Or call our FOLK FONE at 212-563-4099

Or request a free sample copy of our monthly newsletter by writing to:

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club
450 Seventh Avenue, Room 972
New York, NY 10123 [USA]

Full general membership is $27/year for an individual or $37/year for an entire family. A low income idividual membership is available for $16/year for full time students, retirees on fixed income, people on SSI, etc. Members get to go to a series of six top-notch concerts per year without paying any additional admission. They also get discounts on admission to many other Pinewoods events.

If you are interested in joining, please get in touch with our membership chairperson:

Hi Stephen: I hope you and all the NYC members of Pinewoods will come to here us at the People's Voice Cafe this Feb 10. Sorcha Dorcha does traditional Celtic music - mostly Irish and Scottish, some Geordie and Breton music, as well as modern human rights ballads, written by one of our two Uilleann Pipers, me... 8pm 45 East 33rd Street between park and Mad. We are playing on the bill with Ray Collins. We need to see more mudcatters at our gigs, as there are so few in New York. So come by and introduce yourself. I know the rest of the band would love to do things for Pinewoods.
Larry

Well as strange as it may seem, I'm a NY Pinewoods FMC member and I have been for about 4 years. I don't go to the meetings and events because it is about 1623 miles from my front door here in Ada, OK. I keep my membership current as my small way of helping their organization. I'm also a member of the Houston FMS for the same reason.
I met a number of NYPFMC members when I went to Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp (no relation to NYCPFMC). When we lived in CT we went to a Bok, Muir, Trickett Concert in NYC sponsored by NYCPFMC. They, both the club and BMT, did a great job.

From: Suffet
Date: 23 Jan 01 - 06:26 PM

Bob Webb to Appear in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, March 2nd.

Multitalented Folksinger at Polytech in Pinewoods "Folk Off-Broadway" Series.

Traditional folksinger Bob Webb will appear at Wunsch Hall, Polytechnic University in Brooklyn on Friday evening, March 2, 2001, as part of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club's "Folk Off-Broadway" concert series produced in cooperation with the school. The show starts at 8 PM sharp. General admission is $10. Club members pay only $9, and Polytech students will be admitted free.

A typical Bob Webb concert includes ballads, shanties, songs from the West Coast lumber camps and tugboat docks, and a music hall song or two. Some of the songs he learned from relatives and older acquaintances who taught him songs from their own youth. Other songs came from contemporaries and friends, and a few he wrote himself. When not singing a capella, Bob will accompany himself on the guitar, the five-string banjo, the duet-concertina, or one of the other instruments that happen along with him. You can always expect some delights and wonders, a little amazement, and lots of fun when Bob Webb is on stage.

Wunsch Hall, the Polytechnic University student center, is located in Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn, easily accessible by public transportation. Ample parking is available after 7 PM.

For information please contact Steve Suffet, phone (718) 786-1533.

Hey Steve, why don't you come to hear us at the People's Voice Cafe on the 10th, and then book us for pinewoods concerts? Have a listen to us, this Saturday on WBAI at 3:30...

I don't do the bookings for the Pinewoods concerts. That is handled by the program committee, although as a board member I do have some input in prioritizing the list of people who will eventually get invited to do membership series concerts. For most other events, such as our Folk Off Broadway series at Polytechnic, the program committee selects the performers on their own initiative. If you wish to be considered, I suggest you cintact our program committee chaairperson, Evy Mayer. Her e-mail address is
I was recently at People's Voice to hear the Disabled In Action Singers and Eric Levine. That was Jan. 20th. If you were there that night you heard me, as Eric called me up to do one song. I sang "Ten Thousand Years," my trinute to the late Hilary Kelley.

*** Traditional Folk Musicians Gerret and Jeff Warner to Appear in New York City on Friday, March 16, at 8 PM. ***

*** Special Guest Tim Eriksen to Join Sons of Anne and Frank Warner in Pinewoods Series Concert at Advent Lutheran Church. ***

*** Concert to Feature Songs from the Warner Collection. ***

The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club will present traditional folk musicians Gerret and Jeff Warner in concert at the Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway and West 93rd Street in New York City, on Friday evening, March 16, 2001. The show begins at 8 PM. This concert is one in a series of six per year presented by Pinewoods and is free to club members. General public admission is $13.

Gerret and Jeff Warner grew up listening to the songs and stories of their father, Frank Warner, and those of the traditional singers that both their parents, Anne and Frank, met during their numerous folksong collecting trips throughout rural America. The brothers accompanied their parents on their later field trips, and they are the editors of their mother's book, "Traditional American Folk Songs from the Anne and Frank Warner Collection." In addition, Gerret and Jeff are producers of two Warner Collection CDs. This concert will feature many songs from that book and from those CDs.

Gerret and Jeff performed together during their college days, before Gerret began a career as an award winning filmmaker. Jeff Warner has toured in thirty-six states for the Smithsonian Institution, and he has been an artist for the Utah Arts Council, the Ohio Arts Council, and Young Audiences of Massachusetts. In addition, Jeff has been designated a Folklorist and Community Scholar by the New Hampshire Council on the Arts.

The Warners' program includes many songs from rural North Carolina. It was there that Anne and Frank Warner collected the ballad "Tom Dooley" from the singing of Frank Proffitt. Frank Warner later taught the song to the Kingston Trio, whose recording of it became a popular hit.

Gerret and Jeff Warner will be joined in concert by musicologist, balladeer, and rock artist Tim Eriksen of the group Cordelia's Dad. Eriksen, who will play a variety of acoustic instruments, has been a friend and musical collaborator of the Warners for more than a decade.

Well I am one of the NYPFMC members in Jackson Heights, so nice to meet you Mary. Get in touch jerepst@att.net If you come to a concert, I can probably give you a ride home. There certainly are a bunch of us in Jackson Heights. Used to be a couple more, two have passed on in recent years.

NYPFMC has no official, legal connection with Pinewoods Camp, but it was founded by people who had been to the camp (including myself) in 1965 and takes its name from the Camp. We were part of the headquarters operation of COuntry Dance & Song Society (which runs the week at Pinewoods Camp) until CDSS moved out of NYC in the early 1980's. We remain a Center of CDSS.

The Washington Post says Bruce's music "set into motion melodies that radiate enormous spirit and momentum," and Sing Out! says his fiddling "combines precision and abandon so perfectly that it raises the hairs on the back of your neck."

Bruce has performed extensively at festivals and concert venues throughout the United States, including at Lincoln Center in New York City and at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. He toured the United Kingdom with internationally acclaimed fiddler Kevin Burke and others in the historic Fiddles on Fire tour, and he has been a featured performer at Fiddles of the World in Nova Scotia, Canada. Bruce has also toured extensively in Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Finland.

In addition to winning numerous awards at fiddle and banjo contests throughout the American South, Bruce has been featured on the Minnesota Public Radio program A Prairie Home Companion. Pinewoods Series Concert to be held at Advent Lutheran Church.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club proudly presents legendary folksinger-songwriter Bill Staines in concert at the Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway and West 93rd Street in New York City, on Thursday evening, May 10, 2001. The show begins at 8 PM. This concert is one in a series of six per year presented by Pinewoods and is free to club members. General public admission is $13. For further information the public can call Evy Mayer at (718) 549-1344 after 11 AM.

For more than 30 years Bill Staines has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concert halls, clubs, and coffee houses.

Bill has become one of the most popular singers on the folk circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a gentle blend of wit and humor into his performances. Bill sings mostly his own songs, and his music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon. Among his best known compositions are A Place In the Choir, River, and Roseville Fair.

Between his own creations, Bill intersperses songs ranging from traditional folk ballads to contemporary country, and he enjoys having the audience participate in many of the numbers. Bill is also acclaimed for his yodeling.

Hi Joy!

Congratulations again on your selection as President of The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. May your reign be long and the good you do be great.

Because you are fairly new to the Mudcat, I wanted to point out that bert has set up the perfect place to annouce upcoming concerts. Take a look at the "Threads" main page and you'll see that the first 2 threads (called Perma Threads) are in a different color. The second of those is called "What's On." "What's On" is where you can and should post information about upcoming Pinewoods and other gigs. "What's On" is permanent and at the top of the page... the very best place to be! bert does a great job of keeping it current.

"What's On" is good for for us because it eliminates searching for gig threads and saves space at the Mudcat server. The other side of the coin is that Mudcatters live all over the World and no single gig could ever be at a venue more than 1% of us could ever attend.

All the best,
Dan

thanks Dan -- yep we do know about that. there are however, many mudcatters in NYC and the surrounding area -- some who may be attracted by a name or some other thing -- and some mudcatters have responded through the individual threads - where we may not have been in touch through the permathreads.

we will take advantage of the permathreads though.

thanks again,

Dan,

You are right. I did want to mention it. Thanks for reminding me. Let me put it up on the rec.music.folk newsgroup while I am at it.

Sorry the NYPFMC open mike at the Triad Lounge conflicted with the Traditional Singers Session you led at Paddy O'Reilly's last Wednesday. It was a one-time fluke. In the future, our open mike will be on the third Wednesday as they had been for seven years.

Greetings:

7:30 - 10:00 PM

The Riverdale Sing takes place at the Riverdale Presbyterian Church, 4765 Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx. It is a monthly opportunity for friends and neighbors to share some good music and good company. All musical styles are welcome, traditional and contemporary. People should bring voices, instruments, and songs to share. A donation of two dollars per person is requested.

This season we anticipate it will continue the third Thursday of each month through June. The church is located on the west side of the parkway between West 246th and 249th Streets. Go down the driveway to the double red doors off the parking area. The sing is in the auditorium. Parking is available for the first 18 cars.

Munchies and libations also welcome. This upcoming session will take place at the home Joel Landy, 41-08 43rd Street, apt. 4F, in Sunnyside. That's close to Skillman Avenue and just two blocks north of Queens Boulevard.

For information, please call Joel Landy at (718) 937-2240.

A post-session pig-out at a local eatery should be expected. We will pick a place that's friendly to both the most primordial carnivores and the most finicky vegans among us.
