Subject: Query: 'Time, Gentlemen, Time'
From: Joe_F
Date: 29 Jan 01 - 10:44 AM

DigiTrad came up with a remarkable number of songs containing "time" & "gentlemen", but not the one I am looking for. It began something like

Here's to London's fair city, Which closes the pubs at eleven

and had the chorus

Time, gentlemen, time! Time, gentlemen, time! Lift your glass to the pleasures that pass. Time, gentlemen, time!

Does anyone have the rest of the words?

I have this on Eugene Byrne's "People and Places." Will transcribe within the hour (I actually found the tape where it was supposed to be!), if no one beats me to it.

From: Sarah2

Here ya go:

TIME, GENTLEMEN, TIME
(Gene Raskin)

Here's to my town, my own Dublin town,
Where the pubs have to close on time.
You're in heaven by seven,
Thrown out by eleven,
I calls it a bleedin' shame!
And it's...

Refrain:
Time, gentlemen, Time,
Time, gentlemen, Time.
Raise your glass
To the pleasures that pass.
Time, gentlemen, Time.

Here's to our friends, our steady old friends
The ones that are tried and true.
They are the best,
And to hell with the rest,
There is only one test that'll do:
And that's...

Refrain

Here's to the girls, ah, the pretty little girls,
Ah, the girls we used to know.
And here's to their lips, their slender little hips,
What was it made them grow?
It was...

Refrain

And here's to our youth, ah, the days of our youth;
How quickly they pass away.
Ah, but why should we wait
Until it's too late?
Let's kick up our heels today!
While there's...

Refrain

***

This is all the info on the tape. I imagine each singer picks his own favorite city...and "shame" can, of course, be pronounced "shyme" as per Cockney.

*grin* I know, it's a surprise to me as well. But I'd rather have the midi's to tell you the truth. I can't convert mp3's to sheet music!

okay - I'll be honest. I'd rather have BOTH - so I can get the lyric placement from the MP3 and the melody from the midi...

This one is very familiar to me, and I'm surprised I can't find it in a songbook anywhere. The MP3 is great, just as I remember the song (but note that it's set in London town), but I can't transcribe by ear. Can anybody come up with a transcription of the tune, preferably in Noteworthy Composer format (with lyrics tied to the notes)?

What's Raskin's full name, and when was the song published? It seems to me that background information on this song should be easy to come by, but I can't find a thing.

If that's Christy Moore singing on that MP3, then it must have been way before his balls dropped!!!! It doesn't sound like any Christy Moore that I've ever heard...

Joe,

I've e-mailed Eugene to ask your pertinent questions; he's a busy boy, might even be away from home, but his wife will doubtless answer. Will put a tracer on this and let you know.

I can do the music, too, if you have about a month. That's how fast I am...

Joe,

Eugene says he thinks the author's first name is Gene, doesn't know the date. So this will take a bit more research...back later with results, or non-results...

Joe,

This doesn't help a bit in your quest but I remember George Belton of West Sussex singing-

"Time gentlemen please, gents, time gentlemen please,

The landlord will roar as he stands at the door, it's past the half hour I'll serve you no more,

It's time gentlemen please you seem rather weak at the knees,

On your way there goodnight, mind the step you're allright, and it's time gentlemen please!"

Hope you find what you're really after (a drink probably)

J

Downstreeter,

One does these specific searches with a shot or two on hand...good addition, though. Gonna tack those onto my copy. It's a good sing-along, get 'em sloshing their drinks onto each other.

I find this song also listed as being done on the Clancy Brothers "Welcome to Our House" -- anybody have a copy of that? If so, any info on it?

I do not have a copy of the Clancy Bros. "Welcome to Our House", but I do have this song on Liam Clancy's CD "The Dutchman". In that version, the town is London, not Dublin, but still grand for singing.

I have the "Welcome to Our House" cassette, but there are no liner notes. I was wondering if the MP3 above could have been by one of the Clancys. I'd agree with Clinton that it sure doesn't sound like Christy Moore.

Gene Raskin hung out at the in Greenwich Village with Liam Clancy and his Brothers in the 50 and 60's and his songs come up for discussion from time to time on the message board at < liam clancy.com > The last album by the Brothers in 1995 ended with Raskin's popular "Those were the days". "Time Gentlemen"is fun song to belt out around the piano and I guess was written in the 60s. cheers to all sirc

Well, I'll be damned. Sure enough, ASCAP (click) shows Eugene Raskin as the songwriter for "Time Gentlemen Time," recorded by the Clancy Brothers. I woulda swore it was traditional, or a music hall song. BMI shows three songs titled "Time Gentlemen, Please." Thanks for solving this little mystery, everybody.

Well, all I can add at this point is to say that the notes on this song on Liam Clancy's CD "The Ductchman", indicates that it was written by Gene Raskin. No date, or other information is given.

Well, here's the tune as I remember it. No guarantees: it was sung to me *once* about 25 years ago. In solfa (scale is drmfsltDRMFSLT), with dots indicating continuation of a note for a beat:

MMMRMRDs...
DDDDRDlDs....
mmmfmfsDRM.M
RltDtlttDR
sf
m..fmfs.....
D..RDRM.....
M.SDDDRDRM..
M..RMRD.....

It's in waltz time, of course.

I find the stanza devoted to the ladies a bit ungallant (or, as we say these days, politically incorrect) for recent mixed company, and have managed the following ambisexual substitute:

Here's to our limbs, our lusty young limbs,
That used to put on such a show.
Here's to guts and our bosoms & butts --
What was it that made them grow?
It was, etc.
