I must confess to being a "late bloomer" fan of Lyle Lovette. I'd heard some of his tunes in passing over the years, (and of course his famous duet with Randy Newman from the Toy Story Theme) but was rather blown away by his appearance on Austin City Limits, the other night.

Now, I want to get a couple of his CDs, and would like recommendations. Anything bluesy or gospel that he's done would be great (or if there is one album that mixes these influences even better.)

If you had to pick just 2 of his albums, which ones? (Counting on dedicated Lovette fans to come through for me. Thanks muchly in advance.)

I bought Josua Judges Ruth when it first came out. I had never heard of Lyle Lovette, except for one song on the radio. It was enough to make me buy the album, and I still enjoy it.

They're ALL good. I guess my favorite is Lyle Lovette and His Large Band. Someone once lent me a couple of his tapes which I never listened to. One day, I absentmindedly stuck this one on and was stunned. My favorite song is "If You Were To Wake Up". I couldn't stop listening to it. Finally realized it's to the tune of another all time favorite--"Farther Along". He's hard to classify music-wise other than GOOD.

Pontiac! I have several cds, including Joshua Judges Ruth, and I recently bought the two disk set of tunes by other songwriters which is a gem too. Every Lyle Lovett cd I have heard tends to unfold as its own source of inspiration. What a tunesmith!

Thanks people. I appreciate the input (and didn't mean to distract anyone away from threads wanting to know which galaxy and continents Mudcatters are from.) :-)

I went to CDNOW and a couple of other CD sites on the web, and have listened to a bunch of samples. Looks like "Pontiac", "Joshua Judges Ruth" and "Lyle Lovette and His Large Band" will do the trick for me.

The CD Pixie mentions is "Step Inside this House" and it is an awesome collection of music. Done as a tribute to Towns VanZandt and Walter Hyatt.

I Love Everybody too - And there's a great CD by that name also. Plus I vote for "Step Into This House". Great stuff.

Large Band is awesome but Pontiac is my favorite. MAybe I'm just sentimental about it because it's the first Lyle Lovett album I ever got. I also have Joshua Judges Ruth and Step Inside This House - all good. I love the song on JJR he did with Rickie Lee Jones. Fact is, I guess you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. :)

Well I picked up the 3 they had available at my CD shop today: Joshua Judges Ruth, Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, and Pontiac. Tomorrow I will put all three in my car and O.D. on them, which judging from briefly skimming through all of the tracks of all 3 albums is going to take some time. I'm truly amazed at his musical influences and the arrangements. He's all over the place and it seems no matter what he does, it's all done with superb taste. I can see how I'm going to have to get the rest of them as well.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed here. I really do appreciate it!

(Now I need an excuse for a nice 2-3 hour non-stop drive.)

After reading and contributing to this thread, I tried to OD on Lyle Lovett today. Loaded up the CD player with Joshua Judges Ruth,I Love Everybody,The Road to Ensenada, and Step Inside this House.Listened to them all the way through.

It was so good, I think I'll do it again tommorrow.

This page (click) claims to have all of Lyle Lovett's lyrics. Maybe it's my religious background - for me, Joshua Judges Ruth is the must-have Lovett album. I just roar every time I hear him sing "Church" (look at the lyrics, and you'll see why). It is a bit hard to choose favorties, though - "She's Hot to Go" and the whole Pontiac album.

The albums don't do him justice, though - you have to hear Lyle Lovett live. He says outrageously funny things in a way that they kind of slide right past you, and then you stop and wonder, "Did he just say what I think he said???"

You're right, Joe. I still laugh everytime I hear "Make it a CHEESE burger."

My favorite is "she was ugly from the front, she was ugly from the front, she was ugly from the front, she was UGly UGlyUGly..." then Francine Reed: "well, you ugly too..."
