Subject: Am I really that old???
From: nutty
Date: 24 Feb 01 - 01:18 PM

I've just been listening to the TV and it said that The Beatles appeared at the Cavern 40 years ago........ 40 years...... they have just got to be joking

I know the old joints are not as supple...... the feet not as nimble........ the brain not as agile ........ the eyes not as bright ..... but 40 years

I refuse to believe that I am 40 years worth of older .......... 30 I might accept .... 20 is more how I feel

How do these years creep up on us??????

I really think folk music is to blame ...... it lets us grow old and yet still participate
You can sing and play sitting down ..... no need to be agile

You can still sing and play as well or even better than you used to as a teenager

All your friends are ageing alongside of you ...... so you don't notice it as much

You are much more discerning about your activities and have learned to pace yourself

A friend of mine says .... GROWING OLD IS INEVITABLE..... GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL ....
I believe her ... I,ve done the long climb to the top -- now I'm on the gentle slide down the otherside -- How about you????

I canna stop aging.........in fact, I revel in it. But I absolutely, categorically, and paragorically refuse to get old. Ain't doin' it!!! I am 50 years old and just had an aged Uncle ask me if it wasn't about time that I grew up, got a haircut, and a real job. I asked him what the feckin' hurry was. I am, after all, just a kid!!!.................LOL.

All the best,

Big Mick

I am 40 in May - birthdays are not a sign of getting old, but a good excuse for a party!

If it makes you feel old, just think how it makes Paul Ringo & George feel!

Heres to being young at heart! I think that is whay I enjoy running children's workshops - 'cos I can join in!

Ah, Mick, we did grow up, just not exactly like Mom and Dad expected. As young as I often feel, I've still got my 12 year old daughter to remind me how out of date I am. The other day, she was doing a back-flip in her gym class, and I clapped and called "far OUT!" It took a day before she started talking to me again. Bummer.

Ah, LEJ, lad, I feel your pain! Almost everything I try to say to my daughter from the heart gets half-way across and then crashes and burns because of the generational dialectical gap.

But remember, Mick and LEJ, that it's just a body that ages. You guys know perfectly well that in the last analysis you are standing outside of time, outside of space, reaching in to cause trouble and then laughing your big spiritual buns off.

I'm old enough to get away with it and young enough to want to. I'm neither so old nor so young that I have to do anything stupid to prove either that I'm old enough to hang out with the grown-ups or young enoough to keep up with the young'uns.

Allow me to share a couple reality checks I endured. Introducing a class I was about to teach in high school 5 years ago, I mentioned John Kennedy. A student said, "Isn't that the guy who dated Daryl Hannah?" Groan. My stepson listened to a music documentary and then said, "I didn't know Paul McCartney was one of the Beatles?" He later pointed out that the Beatles were singing an Aerosmith song, "Come Together." Longevity has its drawbacks.

Nice quote in this morning's paper...it is from a man in his eighties...one of the rapidly dwindling number of of Iwo Jima vets at a recent reunion: "Who is going to sit and listen to us talk? We are as obsolete as dinosaurs. We are the old fools who saved the world."

Fool on.

I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN

- I'm the life of the party... even when it lasts 'till 8pm. - I'm very good at opening childproof caps with a hammer. - I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I'm going. - I'm good on a trip for at least an hour without my aspirin or antacid... - I'm the first one to find the bathroom wherever I go. - I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. - I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a word you're saying. - I'm very good at telling stories -- over and over and over and over... - I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not as bright as mine. - I'm so cared for: long-term care, eye care, private care, dental care. - I'm not grouchy, I just don't like traffic, waiting, children, politicians... - I'm positive I did housework correctly before the Internet. - I'm sure everything I can't find is in a secure place. - I'm wrinkled, saggy and lumpy, and that's just my left leg. - I'm having trouble remembering simple words like... uh... - I'm now spending more time with my pillows than with my mate. - I'm realizing that aging is not for sissies. - I'm walking more (to the bathroom) and enjoying it less. - I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days. - I'm in the *initial* state of my golden years: SS, CD's, IRA's, AARP. - I'm wondering, if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150? - I'm anti-everything now: anti-fat, anti-smoke, anti-noise, anti-inflammatory. - I'm supporting all movements now... by eating bran, prunes and raisins. - I'm a walking storeroom of facts... I've just lost the key to the storeroom. - I'm a Senior Citizen and I think I am having the time of my life...Aren't I?
Enjoy!

I'm in full agreement, Katcina. Of course, my teens are always complaining how they're too tired from their full lives to clean their rooms. If I follow their logic, and I'm only as old as I feel, I must be barely sixteen.
The things that make me feel part of another generation? When somebody tells me that Marilyn Monroe was fat. That, and when some teens I know "couldn't see the point " of the MASH tv series, and couldn't quite understand the visual cues in "Jesus Christ, Superstar", either.

When I was growing up, we believed that we would be blown up every day by the Russians in a nuclear holocaust. I have taken them a day at a time ever since. It is a pity that, thanks to George W. Bush, the next generation will have to return to that stupid childhood fear, due to the coming new arms race. There is a decadal generation that was freed from that fear, and the masters of war are closing in again. I am sorry for the next generation: I had hoped we might have worked harder towards ridding them of that prospect, given how terrible it was the first time around -- even if it did make me grateful for each new day.
yours, Peter T.

At fifty I haven't the energy to sieze an entire day any more, Carpe Post Meridian makes more sense to me. As I age I learn more, and I refine more. I still play the same games but experience tells me when to slide and when to take the out at second. 100 yards are just a far but I'm in less of a hurry and there is some great things to see along the way. The Swiss naturalist Louis Agassi said of vacations that he took them in his back yard because there were undiscovered worlds under the grasses in his lawn. I still sing the same songs I use too only I understand the passions that inspired them now. Which makes them more passionate in of themselves. I understand now the meaning of " Its the trip, not the destination thats important". As we age we still do the same stuff we did as kids but now we savor when we used to sample. And we've learned to appreciate as well. Ain't nothing wrong with 50, my Sweetie is nearly there and I doubt we will be able to tell the difference tween 49 and 50, any more than we could at 17 and 18 or 22 and 23. If we can just slide through these years together things will be fine.

40 is OLD???? I´m getting on for 47 - though really I can hardly believe it. When I reached the magic 40, I found myself turning my life completely on its head. Maybe it was the classical midlife crisis setting in! Anyway, I got out of a relationship which had definatly run its course, dumped a pretty good job in industry and decided it was time to start trying to follow a few of the dreams that had been lurking somewhere deep inside for as long as I can remember. I simply had the feeling that I´d been given a second (and last) chance and was bloody sure I was going to take it!
So I stopped earning decent money and started working with severly handicapped adults - and I love every minute. And I´ve got a really good band together (which would have been impossible in my earlier life) and a CD out which isnt selling badly at all.Lots of TV and radio coverage. And, and, and.....the list could go on and on!
Ok, so it isnt all a bed of roses.....crises come and crises go.....but its all down to weathering the storm and thats something I´ve learned to do pretty well.
But the most important thing - my relationship to my kids couldnt be better. Now that they are growing up, they are turning into really good friends and I´m getting to be very proud of them! So much so that my daughter, who is 14 and is going through a very difficult phase, has just camped herself down on my floor and has decided to move in with me. For good!! So I am now sharing my 30m² with 6 guitars, a banjo, a mandolin, and a daughter! Looks like the next couple of years could be veeeeery interesting. (Must start looking for a bigger flat!!)
So, what I´m trying to say - 40 is the time to take your chances, roll with the changes and make your life what YOU want it to be!
All the best,
John

Around the time I turned 40, my mom made a comment that I was middle-aged and wasn't a success.I told her that I really resented that comment because I wasn't middle aged.

I'm now 55 and am still not a success, whatever that means, but I do finally consider myself middle-aged.

I never suggested 40 was old

It's 40 years added on to the age I was when The Beatles first appeared that creates the problem ........ life seems to have shot by and in retrospect there have been times when I just wanted to grab the moment and hold it for a while

It's been a real ... STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF ...... experience

Now I want to be able to savour life at a much slower pace .. doing a bit of freewheeling where necessary ...

We have to age in order to get really good at our professions and hobbies. It hit me when I turned 40 and realized that I was doing my adult work, that I was in the midst of a couple of careers, and that I wasn't waiting to find out what I was going to do with my life anymore -- I was already doing it. Now, seven years later, I am conscious of the fact that I am middle aged, and thouroughly enjoying it.

We have to age in order to be the elders of our communities. I feel like I have learned a lot and seen a lot. Every once in a while I am asked to pass some of it on. The young folks don't get asked that. I hope that continues. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

I think the secret to success as an aging person is to thoroughly enjoy whatever stage of your life you are in. I suspect that is what people really mean when they talk about being young at heart. But I don't see myself as being young at heart or in any other way. I'm having too much fun being the age I am -- I'm getting older all the time and enjoying in thoroughly.

You are Old Father William

"You are old, father William," the young man said,
"And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head--
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"In my youth," father William replied to his son,
"I feared it might injure the brain;
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again."

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door--
Pray what is the reason of that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
"I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment--one shilling the box--
Allow me to sell you a couple?"

"You are old," said the youth, "and your jaws are to weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones
and the beak--
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life."

"You are old," said the youth, "one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose--
What made you so awfully clever?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Said the father. "Don't give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs!"

One good thing...The older you get, the less people care about you, or, so it would seem. So, by the same token, the less anybody cares about you getting old. But, when you're young, you've got to be young so perfectly, do it just right, don't screw up. You have more freedom to screw up at being old. (???)

I felt old the other day for a moment...looked at my page-a-day 'Forgotten English' calendar. The word for the day, I suddenly realized...people used to use, when I was young! I could recall saying it (Happened to be the word, 'daw.')-- or, I thought we used to say it.
