A friend suggested I post a query on this forum. I'm looking for a song from the time of the Revolution. I've finished the 1st draft of a play about my g-g-g-grandfather who was in the revolution as a soldier at Bunker Hill at age 17. The love story in the play is the courting of my g-g-g-grandma who he married in 1780 and then they moved to Maine. Each time, during the play, when he leaves she sings a song. The first time its, "Johnny has Gone For a Soldier" the second time, after they declare for each other, it's "Sweet is the Budding Spring of Love". Now I need a song for 1779 when he signed as a Mass State Marine and sailed on the ship Boston. He came back, they married, he marched off one more short time and then they moved to Maine. Is there a "Why do you go, when I love you so" song of the 1770's that would fit? If not, I'll write one but would prefer to use a period piece.

Go to The Levy Sheet Music site and choose "Search the Collection". Put love in the first box, then choose subject from the pull down menu. At the bottom put your date parameters. I found 2 about love, but Levy links only send you to the main page, not the search results.

Sounds like an interesting project. I'll sift through my collection and see if I can come up with something. Where are you based now, if not in Maine?

I'm in Maryland but all my ancestors and kin are on or under Maine soil (with a few in New Jersey). My project came out of some gratis genealogical research done for my brother were I discovered this ancestor I did not know about. A web search brought up more info and seemed to aim toward an historical novel or a play. My first attempt at this type of writing but fun to do - put words into my ancestors mouth.

I'm a long term guest on this website but you're wlecome to my e-mail address; I'd really like to help with your project if I can, and several members of our sea songs group would be interested as well: ipbar@agate.net

Another friend and sea novel writer James Nelson, here in Maine, may have come across something as well.

Cheerily, Charlie
