Subject: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: radriano Date: 05 Apr 01 - 06:10 PM John Conolly and Pete Sumner will be visiting California near the end of May and will do two house concerts. On May 31st they will be in Davis, California, at a private residence. Call Bill Wagman (530) 753-3472 for reservations (e-mail: wjwagman@ucdavis.edu); show starts at 8 pm, $10 donation. John and Pete will do another house concert on June 3rd, 3 pm, at the Adelphian Center for the Arts in Alameda, California (510) 748-8181, also $10 donation. They may also do a concert at the Hyde Street Pier but that has not been finalized yet. The compact disc they recorded together, Trawlertown, has received excellent reviews. For anyone not familiar with these performers here's some of their promo stuff: JOHN CONOLLY (vocals, guitar, squeeze-box, & tin-whistle) is an internationally respected songwriter, whose compositions such as the classic "Fiddler's Green", "Punch and Judy Man" and many others are known and loved all over the world. Many of John's songs have a tang of the sea, reflecting his upbringing on the East Coast of England, and he is also a fine interpreter of the traditional songs collected by Percy Grainger in Lincolnshire at the turn of the century. PETE SUMNER (cittern, mandolin, guitar and banjo) is a skillful and sensitive musician, whose instrumental versatility provides an ever-changing musical backdrop to John's thought-provoking lyrics. Pete's ceilidh band background means he usually can be found where the "session" is; his recent book "Lincolnshire Collections Vol. 1, The Joshua Gibbons Manuscript", has received critical acclaim. Pete and John are experienced performers in all kinds of venues, from the large concert-hall to a corner in the local pub - however, their music is particularly suited to the intimate surroundings of the village hall or small arts theatre. John's songs are no strangers to the Arts Circuit, as he wrote the songs and music for the highly acclaimed play "The Northern Trawl", which has toured extensively in Britain, Scandinavia and Iceland. Much of their work is on the arts and folk-music scene but the duo also perform in schools and for radio and television. In Spring 1997, for example, John and Pete were featured by Yorkshire T.V. in their own "mini-series", Lincolnshire Legends, in which they presented and performed the music for a journey through rural Lincolnshire in songs and stories. |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: GUEST,Meadow Muskrat Date: 05 Apr 01 - 11:01 PM Any chance they will be performing on the East Coast? I"ve known of John Conolly for over 30 years as the author of Fiddler"s Green, a song popularized by the late Bob Beers.I suspect he would be well received at folk venues in the Northeast on that basis alone. As best as I can recall I have never seen him scheduled to perform anywhere in the area. |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: radriano Date: 06 Apr 01 - 11:14 AM John Conolly's trip to California was originally just to visit a relative or friend (I don't know the details). I had gotten in touch with him a while ago to ask about recording a couple of his songs. Pete Sumner e-mailed me back and told me about John's planned trip to California. He said they had the one house concert in Davis and he expressed their desire to do more while in the area. Nothing was said about any other tours. I should find out this morning about the Hyde Street Pier concert. Richard |

Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: GUEST,Judy Predmore (at work) Date: 06 Apr 01 - 07:34 PM John & Pete did a small tour in just a few places in New England in '98 or '99. It was mainly to do the Mystic Seaport Music festival. I forget where else they were besides a Boston house concert. They were surprised that we knew several of John's songs by heart, that we joined in heartily on songs we'd never heard, & that we inhaled their CD's... Glad to hear they'll be stateside again... |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: fat B****rd Date: 07 Apr 01 - 04:18 PM that must be the ex-librarian folkie john connolly who probably hated the rumble band but was always friendly and unbeknown to him played me and a friend r'n'b at the marquee by alexis korner at beaconthorpe methodist youth club in 1963 and opened up a whole new world of wondrous music !! more power to him. oh by the way i was the blueyed soul singer with that rumble band |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: radriano Date: 10 Apr 01 - 11:36 AM Fat B****rd, don't know if it's the same person but I do know that the name is spelled Conolly. |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 10 Apr 01 - 02:03 PM Fat B****rd, Yes, it is the same John Conolly. He used to play at the folk club at the Dolphin in Cleethorpes every Sunday. I'm about 10 yrs too young to have seen the Rumble Band but I remember seeing posters around Grimsby and Cleethorpes. My brother saw you play. Which venues? Winter Gardens? Mecca? Ross Club? Beachcomber? Captain Swing |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: fat B****rd Date: 10 Apr 01 - 04:24 PM dear captain swing , thankyou for your reply.I trust established 'catters won't mind me taking up space, but i'm going to anyway.i sang with the original rumble band from 1966 to 1968 mainly at the south bank jazz club and the winter gardens in grimsby and cleethorpes respectively.we did other gigs but due to the large numbers of personnel these were few and far between. john was friendly with several people at the jazz club and was always amicable. all the best fB |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: GUEST,The bloke in the corner Date: 10 Apr 01 - 07:55 PM John and Pete are two of the nicest people. They have played several times at the Carnival Inn, Barton on Humber (a town around 24 miles from Grimsby, by the Humber Bridge) It's still amazing to think that 'Fiddler's Green' and 'Mr Punch and Judy Man' aren't from 50 or 100 years ago, but in fact were both written in or after the Beatles era. Any 'catters are always welcome at the Carnival on a Saturday night, when there's an open mike - with P.A. but all acoustic - with NO restrictions, and of course at the session at the Sloop, Barton on Humber, every Tuesday (from which I've just come, having seen Skipjack and Boxette - ask about her new Allodi accordion!) Music is alive and well and living in North Lincs (among other places) |

Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: Liam's Brother Date: 16 Apr 01 - 11:40 AM John Conolly is one of the nicest, most modest and talented people on the folk scene. Bob Conroy and I spent a lot of time with him in Lancaster and in Brest last year. John is an excellent singer and a charming entertainer on his own. His recording, Trawlertown, with Pete Sumner and others is brilliant! I'm very sorry they won't be in the Northeast USA but do go see them if you're in Northern California and please give them regards from Dan & Bob. Thanks.
All the best, |
Subject: RE: John Conolly/Pete Sumner concert in CA From: dick greenhaus Date: 16 Apr 01 - 11:50 PM At the Mystic Sea Music Festival a few years back, John announced that he was going to sing "a medley of his greatest hit" He's done enough other good songs so that it's a shame that he seems to be doomed to be remembered only for Fiddler's Green. (And yes, you can get Trawlertown from Camsco, if you wish. No matter where you buy it, it's a fine CD) |
