Subject: Ranters Wharf From: GUEST,sisgen Date: 28 Oct 01 - 11:57 AM Does anyone have the words to John Connoly's "Ranters Wharf" I have tried the usual search on the didital tradition but nothing seems to be there? |
Subject: Lyr Add: RANTER'S WHARF (John Conolly) From: Banjo-Flower Date: 28 Oct 01 - 04:17 PM On Ranter's Wharf the sun went sailing down Like an old square-rigger bound for sea once more, And in the murmur of the evening tide, I heard a small voice crying, crying on the shore.
I found her weeping by the waterside,
"My Johnny was a handsome sailor lad
"I watch the seasons come and go, kind sir,
On Ranter's Wharf the tide is turning now. With compliments, Gerry |

On Ranter's Wharf the tide was turning now; "Ranter's Wharf" is a dockside alley off Grimsby's Victoria Street. It always seemed like a good title for a song, and eventually this one emerged; it is based on the traditional belief that the souls of drowned seamen are transmuted into seagulls. From The Singing River; songs by John Conolly and Bill Meek published 1985. NK |

Subject: Ranter's Wharf From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 08 May 02 - 03:36 PM I hope this doesn't result in a blue clicky and a put down. I expected to find it easily but have so far failed. It does not show on the alpha. list, and I searched under Ranter*, Wharf, seagull* , old square, but nothing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranter's Wharf From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 08 May 02 - 03:40 PM Just read the search queery thread, used the filter and found it. Sorry all. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranter's Wharf From: MMario Date: 08 May 02 - 03:43 PM no problem Keith - glad you were able to find it. the alpha list is titles that are in the copy of the DT ; whereas the other search features pull from either the DT or the forum or BOTH |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranter's Wharf From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 02 - 03:49 PM Hi, Keith - can you give us a little more of what you know of the song? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranter's Wharf From: MMario Date: 08 May 02 - 03:52 PM previous thread on Ranter's Wharf you should have the NWC file joe. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranter's Wharf From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 02 - 03:56 PM Darn. I have a deathly-slow Internet connection this morning because I'm trying to download the Star Wars trailer for my stepson. The Ranter's Wharf thread has it. I'll consolidate the two threads sooner or later. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranters Wharf From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 09 May 02 - 03:15 PM Sorry to make you do a merge. I did search both forum and DT MMario, but only worked when I tried the filter. I have nothing on the song Joe, except I first heard it long before the publication date given in Noreen's post. I had it on a Yetties album I think in late 60's, certainly not much after1970. It also had Banks of Newfoundland, Watchet Sailor, and the one that goes open the pane and put out the flame.. The tune and fragments have been in my head ever since. Recent posts reminded me of it so I decided to learn it all. I have it straight now, so I will have them crying into their beer at the White Horse on Monday! Dreaming or drunken, Keith. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranters Wharf From: Noreen Date: 09 May 02 - 04:37 PM Undoubtedly this was written many years before 1985, Keith; that was merely the publication date of the book. Dating John Conolly/Bill Meek songs is difficult as the Broadside LPs seem to be undated (I couldn't see any date on them anyway). Lovely song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranters Wharf From: GUEST,Keith A on tour Date: 01 Aug 02 - 02:33 PM I am presently in St.Agnes, Cornwall where my brother is on the launch crew of the lifeboat. On Tuesday night someone phoned in a report of hearing pitiful cries and calls for help from below the cliffs at Portreath. The lifeboat was launched and the Coastguard turned out, but they found nobody. Only the gulls. Sometimes, I think.... Keith.
