Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Apr 01 - 11:19 PM When you read grant proposals or program proposals, it's fun to spot the acronyms they do NOT realize they are creating. Always THINK! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Deni Date: 20 Apr 01 - 06:32 AM Can I have the last word after all this wit? I thought it meant lots of love too, (IT MUST BE MUDCAT LOVE) but didn't like to embarass myself. Just shows we can't take anything for granted in a mudcat world. Overwhelmed by the response, from Devon |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Blackcatter Date: 20 Apr 01 - 06:19 PM Not that it matter - and I would guess that most everyone here understood - I did know what FAQ stood for. I just thought it was funny that Joe unknowingly used it in a short rant about he hates acronyms. I tend to dislike them too - but any organization is suseceptiple to their use - it is just so easy to use shorthand. For instance I am the Chairperson for the FDCMYASC of the UUA. (Florida District Campus Ministry / Young Adult Sub-Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Association.) yikes! The sad thing is that there is a Unitarian Church known as F.U.C.K. ME - the First Unitarian Church of Kennebunkport Maine. pax yall |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Burke Date: 20 Apr 01 - 06:42 PM Hey Blackcatter, I thought you church was UUC, not to be confused with UCC. We need to work on the beer acronym Joe mentioned. I didn't find anything in a forum search. It's got to have SBOMN (spewing or spraying beer out my nose) or SBOOMN (spewing beer out of my nose) as part of it. LOLSBOOMN? ROTFLMAOSBOOMN? |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Blackcatter Date: 20 Apr 01 - 07:14 PM Hi Burke - No were the UUA which long ago broke off from the anscestor to the UCC. I'm not aware of what the UUC is - there is the UUSC - the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee - our international aid organization. I am also part of the CUUYAN - The Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network - as well. And my local young adult group uses "POA" - which stands for People of Action or Pieces of Ass depepnding on how frisky we are feeling. I am also a member of TUUSH - Tanned UUs for Social Harmony - the local UU nudist group. |

Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Bob Bolton Date: 20 Apr 01 - 07:28 PM G'day WYSIWYG: "WOBH = Whale Oil Beef Hooked. Say it fast and you will get it. I think it may be Aussie in origin-- it was born in a thread I think." I think you will find this a lot older than the net ... and Pommy (English) in origin. I first heard it from and old Pom with whom I worked at British Leyland (Australia) around 1970 - and he said he had seen it as an entry in Punch Magazine's competition for witty new captions to old cartoons. The published cartoon for this month's comp. had an astonished fisherman on a beach, reeling in a whale ... and the new caption was roughly what you quote. I'm afraid the credit can be calimed by neither us Aussies nor us nerd nerds. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Apr 01 - 01:35 AM IRL = In Real Life, and we missed that one so far didn't we? It figures! Remember? Life outside Mudcat? Some of us who left Mudcat used LAM for awhile-- Life After Mudcat. Being on the LAM is not as much fun as being here though so most of us come back eventually. Ever notice IRL and URL sound the same? How funny is THAT? URL-- that's Universal Reality Loss, right? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Apr 01 - 01:44 AM WOBH! Ooops, sorry Bob! Didn't see ya sitting there till I'd turned to go! G'day! That is very interesting on WOBH, and I guess OBH now myself! Somebuddy really ought to enter WOBH in the FAQ too as a piece of Mudcat lore. I can't recall now what thread it was first in and who posted it, and the old 486 and modem are not in happy partnership tonight so it will not be me who goes looking this time. But I think we should put Bob's explanation into that thread too just to make it all right, or a link to here. I'm not saying whoever posted it tried to claim credit-- that's probably just my CRS. But I think it ought to be there-- someone find it maybe? Because we do refer people back to it from time to time. G'nite Bob! ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Apr 01 - 04:51 AM Well, darn, maybe I was imagining the "beer out my nose" acronym. I searched for out (of) my/his/her nose. I found lots of gross stuff and a number of acronyms, but no beer-nose ones. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Micca Date: 21 Apr 01 - 07:34 AM Ithink it was something like COFFYN=Coffee Out Flowing From Your Nose, which was used with reference to songs in one of the early song challenge threads.. I have always liked DILIGAF? Do I Look Like I Give A F*** and I thought that Joe Offer had deliberately used an acronym in his rant as a piece of Irony...It would have been in (what I understand to be)character for him... |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Apr 01 - 08:51 AM I like that emoticon, Guest. Variant: Sit on _|_ and rotate! *G* Joe turned coffee into beer. There's a fancy case of hermeneutics for ya. *G* ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Apr 01 - 05:19 PM Yes, my miracle of turning coffee into beer is described fully in Joe 13:72-78. Would you expect a Wisconsin boy to turn it into wine? The appropriate Wisconsin response to my using "FAQ" in a tirade against acronymns is, "Oh, fer dumb!" Hey, I'm newly in love. You expect me to be anything but dumb? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: Hawker Date: 21 Apr 01 - 05:29 PM Deni, I thought it meant 'Lonely Old Lucy' - To busy boxing up belongings to answer F.A,Q's! How the divil are ya? Coming to my party? Hope to see you on the 5th! Lucy |

Subject: RE: BS: What does lol mean, please? From: CRANKY YANKEE Date: 22 Apr 01 - 04:22 AM WATSMM HATTAH (pronounced: "Whatsumatta" or What's the matter) Why are there so many more horses asses than there are horses? I think this may very well be one of my dad's originals. He's the man who first diagnosed "Occular Feceosis" A very serious condition where your asshole shrinks up over your head and you get a shitty outlook on life. HIS father, my grandfather (I think) is he guy who, when told that the town they lived in in Russia was now part of Poland, was quoted as saying, "Thank God, I don't think I could stand another one of those cold Russian Winters". See, it runs in the family |
