Subject: Bill Munroe's birthplace to be dedicated
From: Banjer

Hear last night on a show calle dCumberland Highlanders that on August 23 in Rosine KY, Dr. Ralph Stanley will be on hand to help dedicate the restored birthplace of Bill and Charlie Munroe. Sure wish I could be there. I think I also heard or read that there will be a celebration stretching over sevral days around August 22 to 25 honoring the Father of Bluegrass. Anyone planning to attend could keep the rest of us posted and maybe even take some pictures to share. Ralph Stanley is somewat of a regular on the show, The Cumberland Highlanders which we get on the Outdoor Channel each Saturday at 6:30PM. Good show, try to catch it.

What wouldn't I give to be there for the dedication festivities. I'm a little surprised that its taken so long to get the restoration up and going. Was or is there no existing memorial to Monroe? Come to that, is there any such tribute to the Carter family?

Banjer, I was grateful for your post but didn't have anything useful to add. Guess I should have said thanks. I won't be able to attend the dedication but it's good to know I should stop next time I'm through Rosine, KY. I've actually been there and to Beaver Dam and seen Jerusalem Ridge. It's a pretty place.

Also good to know about The Cumberland Highlanders show. I don't watch that much television and never watch the outdoor channel so I was unaware of the program. I'll check it out.

Thanks,

      - Mark

Mark, I didn't mean to sound like I was looking for any 'reward' for posting this. It just struck me as odd that so many folks always get on people's cases about BS threads, crying that there are not enough music related threads, and when I open a thread that is music related there are two responses in two days yet the BS threads flourish. I love a good BS thread myself and will often add to them so this is NOT a RANT against BS. Anyhow, just took me a little by surprise I guess.....

The Cumberland Highlanders features Campbell Mercer, D.V.M., who is head of the Bill Monroe Foundation (or is it the Rosine Foundation?) and actually put up the money for BM's mando. The group features some of the Bluegrass Boys.

Information about the dedication can be found at Rosine.com.

Hope there's a Mudcat Parking Lot Picking session in honor of the event. Getting to Roseville on the 23rd might be impossible for most, but I imagine Munroe's got a legion of admirers in Mudcat Hollow.

MONROE, please. If some of you want to whine about nobody caring about the guy, at least have the decency to spell his name right. Jesus.

yours, Peter T.

Geez PT, I told you not to use those cobs Cletus sent you as a substitute for toilet paper. They always rip me the wrong way too and I get real edgy...........

Hadn't seen anything about the dedication myself until this thread. Like Mark and others, I've been through there a time or two. I'll bet this is a huge event!

Spaw

Well, Peter, I didn't see anyone whining so not sure to what you are referring. In addition, however, to spelling his name correctly, the place is Rosine, Kentucky, not Roseville. Where the heck did "Roseville" come from, anyway?

And that is pronounced Munrow, not Munrow thank you very much. As in the Scots Munro, or Munroe. It's OK,Peter, we still love you.

Yes, Sorchie, you are absolutely correct, although I thought putting the emphasis on the first syllable was just the southern way of pronouncing it.

It is "Monroe," not "Munroe," isn't it?

Aw, heck, I bin bussted bye tha spelin' pulice! *BG*

Peter T is right, it is spelled Monroe. He is further right that a person's name should be spelled properly. My apologies to all!

Bluebelle may have hit the nail on the head with her Southern pronunciation explanation. When I hear it spoken (and when I say it) it sounds like Munroe. She is also right about Campbell Mercer being a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. That show, the Cumberland Highlanders is the only show I can recall seeing where dogs wander around loose, sometimes settling at the perfomers feet! Just gives it an air of good ole down home style...I like it! If you ever watch the show look at the credits at the end, they will list the dog's names under the heading "K-9 Stunt Unit"!

When I saw the Cumberland Highlanders, in May, another member of the group was Wayne Lewis, who was with Monroe for 11 years. He was playing what I thought was probably a vintage "bone." You know the sound: like a cannon with a big, boomy bass. When I talked to him, later that day, discovered it was indeed a "Martin," but not a C.F. Martin, a J.E. Martin, and was only 18 months old! The young man, who is making these old-sounding guitars, was standing with Wayne. His name is James E. Martin and he lives in Tennessee and is buiding these great guitars that sound like they're 60 years old!

The moral of the story is this: Don't lament because your budget or wife won't allow you to take out a second mortgage on the house to buy that $40,000 old Martin. It is possible to get a guitar that sounds as good, and, in some cases, even better than the old Martin, for a fraction of the cost.

I need to say that I dreamed of having Jean Ritchie on the show for the last 160 episodes. Then I dreamed of having her open the Bill Monroe home dedication ceremony right before Uncle Pen's Fiddle takes off. Jean and I talked today about her being on the TV show next time she is in KY. I am very excited!

Campbell: I attended the festival over Memorial Day weekend and had a great time! Besides shedding a few tears at the Bluegrass Boys Reunion, and getting to hear inperson some of the bluegrass icons, I got to jam with several of the BGB's that Saturday night. What a treat that was!! Prior to attending IBMA, I'll be touring Kentucky with a friend from Northern Ontario, and his only request (after hearing my stories) was that we spend some time in Beaver Dam and Rosine soaking up the spirit of Bill Monroe!

I enjoy the sound of Bluegrass, kind of grew up with it....As fo rhow many there are, I really don't know, can someone supply some numbers? I do know there are those who are very active and those who only lurk and don't get involved with the posts. Anyhow, welcome and now that you know its here, do drop by often!!
