The Canadian warship 'Fredericton' (hope it's spelled correctly) is just now lying in Kiel harbour with other Nato ships, and they had a huge celebration last night. I was invited 'cause I got to know two of the ship's crew last week. But with my usual sense of timing, I was down with migraine all day yesterday! I asked the guys - both being from Halifax - did they know a song called 'Barratt's Privateers'? They started grinning from ear to ear and assured me their band would be playing it on Canada Day! Hope they and all Canadians had a great time! |

The old one had symbols in it for most of the significant cultural groups that made up Canada's heritage (with the possible exception of Native Americans)...and it was more colorful. The new one should have had some symbol or color in it somewhere to show the presence of the French. It doesn't. It has only 2 colors...red for the land, the blood, and the British), white for spirit. Not enough. However, I can live with it. No big deal. Canada Day in Orillia featured a day that looked beautiful, but was friggin' COLD!!!!! 53 degrees F.!!! Just a few days ago we were dying of the heat here, and now I'm wondering if we'll get frost tonight. Makes you wonder just what the hell is going on with the weather here. We watched a performance by Sabotabby, a young friend's fine celtic/bluegrass/acoustic rock group. Then we went up to Parliament Hill a couple of blocks away--there'll be performances there tonight, and already there were lots of people. The downtown is closed off to vehicles, so people were able to walk about anywhere in the streets. Lots of small hand held flags carried by people of all ages, and lots of faces decorated with same--even mine! One touching scene was the tomb of the unknown soldier at the base of the National War Monument---people were spontaneously laying their small flags on the tomb. It was covered with them--a nice gesture of respect. Happy National Day, Canada! |

No need to worry about the noise and I got to hear all about the sister of my parent's neighbour's walk in the park. It was cold and windy today but it didn't stop us diehards from having the 18th annual Arts for Peace Festival. Some lovely live music (the Raging Grannies nearly got blown off stage but instead only a speaker came down), clay, bubbles, painting, and planting bean seeds for the kids, hotdogs, fresh fruit and baked stuff to eat, not to mention Sacred Circle Dancing, Maypole Dancing and Morris Dancing, (hello John B.). Tables were there from Amnesty International and Project Ploughshares. A pleasant afternoon after I had changed my shorts and T-shirt to jeans, sweatshirt and a jacket. |

From: hesperis Date: 02 Jul 01 - 01:47 AM This afternoon, I and Little Hawk went to the Arts for Peace Festival at the Stephen Leacock Home in Orillia, and Morris Danced for the first time in my life. (Hi, John B!) Then we listened to "Alex", a local band, play some folk tunes. They are pretty good, and a lot of fun, but the sound guy must have been deaf. Sophoclesse started playing soccer with a couple of people, probably to get away from the overpowering loudness of the music. Then we heard some beautiful, powerful singing from Marg Raynor. The talent from around here is AMAZING! Then I went home because poor Little Hawk was FREEEEEZING in the freaky cold weather we had today! And he was driving, so I had to leave. (That Morris Dancing must have been powerful, because I wasn't that cold. I'm usually the one who gets cold before ANYONE gets cold...) Then later we watched fireworks. Beauty, eh? |

For Flags, I think a simple design is the best! The Red Ensign was pretty to be sure, but way too busy and way too much Union Jack! (No offence Brits but we are our own country now) Also the coats of arms only represented Four Provinces. Our new flag is elegant, simple and sends the right message about what Canada is. It doesn't depict the English or the French or the Scotts or the Irish or the Italians or the Chinese. It represents all Canadians for what we are now! I was a small boy when we started flying the Maple Leaf, I loved it then and I love it now. During the ten years I lived in Ottawa that flag gave me tears of pride during the Canada Day Celebrations! It is undeniably strange, but Maple Leafs it is... McGrath - I think you're right, the maple leaf was chosen because it represents all Canadians in an unspecific way. As far as the white....well, maybe it has something to do with ice and snow, but I'm not sure. It could just be there in order to provide a field for the red leaf to stand on. They could just as well have had a green leaf on a blue field. I think I like the old Red Ensign simply because that's the flag I grew up with, and like Rob Dale I was very patriotic as a young boy. These things remain strongly imprinted in the subconscious. The Red Ensign to me will always be Canada, whereas the new flag seems like some kind of afterthought to me...sort of an artificial thing that got stuck on later. These are instinctive reactions which probably have little to do with the actual aesthetic merits of either flag. - LH |

Hockey fans are bad enough without extra ammunition. (just a theory) Speaking of Hockey! How about the national (Olympic and World championships) hockey team jerseys. They are so cool that it looks like the flag was invented for Hockey! I hope that the white doesn't represent snow anymore than it does on the union jack, starss and stripes or French tri colour. Here is the reason for the red and white given in the royal proclamation. I guess if it is good enough for old George V it ia good enough for us! The flag is red and white, the official colours of Canada as appointed by King George V in 1921, with a stylized 11-point red leaf in its centre.
Enjoy your paid holiday back up there in the true north strong and free! (I get Wednesday off here in Georgia) Hot dogs and fireworks and not a maple leaf to be seen! |

Ottawa's fireworks were blown out -- at 45 kph and gusting to well over 60 kph, the wind was too strong, and the fireworks were called off for safety reasons. I don't think it has ever happened before. Edmund, my brothers, my sister-in-law and I hiked out onto the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge over the Ottawa River (our favourite vantage point, straight sight-line to the fireworks launch site) and waited in the freezing gale for more than 45 minutes -- nothing happened. We went home, had cocoa (them) and slivovitz (me) and went to bed. All the way home, I kept expecting the first ka-booms to tell me that I had given up too early and was missing the show of the year, and it was cold comfort indeed to find out that everybody missed out. I read in the paper that Alanis Morrisette was a great hit on Parliament Hill, but it will be a frosty Friday in hell before I again brave the mad crowd that forms downtown for the Canada Day show. Once trampled, permanently put off. However, the chicken barbecue went well (everybody well stuffed), we sang a few songs in the afternoon, and today we are enjoying concentrated idleness. From: Barry T Date: 02 Jul 01 - 01:32 PM A little background on the Canadian flag: The design that became the Canadian flag was conceived by Dr. George Stanley, then Dean of Arts at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. I am proud to say that "Doc Stanley" was my history prof at the time. His design proposal was based upon the College Flag, a design that originated about 1920.
Here is a more complete story.
I remember clearly that cold February evening when our pipe band and bugler mustered on the parade square to lower the Canadian Ensign for the last time and to raise the new flag. Though I recall being most concerned with my body temperature at the time, that lonely ceremony now has a very special place in my memory, and I was fortunate to find that a fellow cadet had photographed the event. |

We went back to Bryan Suttons after the Festival and stayed there singing until it wasn't Canada Day any more. We had 3 mudcatters Morris Dancing in Orillia for the last dance, (Sophocleese, Hesperis and JohnB) you might ask where was Little Hawk, hiding in the crowd would be the answer. He had disappeared by the time I had finished talking to Sophocleese and Hesperis, so I never did get a chance to talk to him. I think they could be hooked on the Morris stuff, they even want to start an Orillian Side, Great stuff. JohnB |

We took my Mum in the afternoon to the celebrations in Victoria to hear my brother band play for part of the festivities. When their set ended, he announced from the bandstand that not only was it Canada's Birthday, it was also Mum's, and that although she wasn't quite as old as Canada, at 81, she was pushing it. The band and the crowd sang Happy Birthday to her as her tears rolled. Happy Birthday Mum! Happy Birthday Canada!
Times have changed since I was young. I have no recollection of celebrating the 1st of July in Canada with flag waving and fireworks prior to the seventies; that was what the Americans did for their Fourth of July holiday. Prior to Trudeau, Dominion Day, as it was called then, was just a welcome day off from work.
On the westcoast of Canada, at least, the flags and fireworks always came out for Victoria Day, the 24th of May, and when we were small, we would line the street for the Victoria Day Parade, donned in our sailor suits and best dresses, waving Red Ensigns and Union Jacks. It seems weird to think of it now. I do recall that my cousin, when we about 14 or 15, created quite a stir locally one 24th of May. He'd found a large Russian Flag and flew the "Hammer and Sickle" beside the Red Ensign and the Union Jack, from the second story balcony of my grandmother's house, which was on the May Day (24th) parade route. This was sometime during the early sixties at the height of the cold war. We thought it was a hoot, but my grandmother and others were not amused. |
