Subject: Peter's Fiddle Or I don't know the name
From: GUEST,Hoskald@yahoo.com

I've been searching for the complete lyrics to a song I heard once...and I've had no luck at all over the past couple of years. The refrain went something like this:

There was Peter sittin' in the corner, fiddle in his hand, -snip- Come on, won't you let me in? I want to join the band...

Thanks in advance, Dan

Nutty, thanks for posting the link. The title is 'Peter's Song', and it was written by Tommy Sands.

The above link doesn't work. It looks like The Tin Whistle, an Irish pub in Victoria, BC, has changed the URL of its lyrics & tunes page. Have you ever heard of a pub with its own lyrics & tunes web page? It looks like a good one and may be worth bookmarking. Anyway, I found the lyrics and here they are. (On the lyrics page, the song is called "Peter.")

PETER'S SONG
(Tommy Sands)

CHORUS: There was Peter sitting in the corner, his fiddle in his hand,
Playing like you never did hear and you'll never hear again,
Charlie on the banjo, Shorty on the bodhrán, and everything was grand.
Come on, Mark, and let me in. I want to join the band.

Then late one night he let me in and I made my way along.
The rafters rang with reels and jigs and someone sang a song.
There were flying bows and bodhrán sticks. You hadn't room to turn.
But there was always a chair and a couple of drinks for the lad who came to learn. CHORUS

But the time said, "Gentlemen, please!" and the gentlemen would go.
Some of us might stay a while and sing songs very low.
And Peter he'd play one last tune and put away his bow,
But his fiddle is still playing no matter where you go. CHORUS

It was the springtime seventy-four that Peter he did die,
And Fergy played the death march. There was great good talents found.
And as we stood there silently aweep now round the grave,
Jenny's chickens could be heard and I can see it all again. CHORUS

The day that Peter passed away we always will regret.
The things he said and the tunes he played we will never forget.
Now the heavenly choir they looked alive and the angels struck their harps.
The knocking was heard at the Golden Gate and this was their remark:

CHORUS: There was Peter sitting in the corner his fiddle in his hand
Playing like you never did hear and you'll never hear again,
St. Paul on the banjo, Moses on the bodhrán, and everything was grand.
Almighty God, will you let me in? I want to join your band.
