I heard various versions of "Aiku, Aiku," (sp?) on PBS a while back (American Roots?). They said something about the song being sung in a New Orleans street language. Can someone post the lyrics? Also, what do you know about the language?

It's usually spelled "Iko, Iko"

This is from the bio posted on the BlueFlameCafe website (everyting about the blues) and is about Dr. John the NIght tripper (Mac Rebbenack)

After Gris Gris, Dr. John recorded the albums Babylon and Remedies and The Sun, Moon & Herbs before scoring with Gumbo, an album that was filled with New Orleans roots music. The 1972 work contained flavorful versions of New Orleans standards like "Iko Iko" and "Tipitina." The follow-up Atco record, In the Right Place, featured Dr. John's biggest pop hit, "Right Place, Wrong Time," which made it to number 9 on the charts in 1973.

So to hear Dr. John's version, locate the album Gumbo & look for that track--althoug I've heard it elsewhere.

Sonja

If you type in either IKO or JACOMO FINANE in the Digitrad and Forum Search box at the top of the threads lsiting and you'll find several comprehensive discussions on the song, its meaning and origins. Click on any of them, and be amazed.

Snuffy, I tried searching on IKO, Iko, iko, JACOMO FINANE, Jacomo Finane, jacomo finane, Jacomo, JACOMO, jacomo, FINANE, Finane, and finane, and didn't find ANYTHING. I got a "sorry" message each time.

Alex

Alex,

I've just been back and typed IKO in the Digitrad and Forum Search box again and got No results in the DT and 27 messages in the Forum (on perhaps 5/6 separate threads).

Sorry; I was putting it in the Digitrad Lyrics Search. Silly me.

Never mind.

I looked in the forum under "Jacomo" and found the very lengthy, very intriguing thread about Iko, Iko, the Gullah language, Indians in Louisiana, and the meaning of "Jacomo finane."
