I was just listening to a caller on a local talk show. She was one of the many American "refugees" (the official title used) who was re-routed to Canada and trapped there for several days in the wake of the attack. The treatment she recieved there can only be described as excellent. Where Red Cross support was not available, the local folks knocked themselves out providing shelter, food, etc. The government installed phone lines at refugee centers and provided free long distance calling to the states. Hell, they even installed cable for the people to watch. According to the caller, there was a bus drivers strike in the area where she was, yet many of the drivers called a halt in the strike to provide free transportation for the refugees. From now, on my (not inconsiderable) expenditures on beer are going to be geared toward Canadian imports. Plus, I am going to start purchasing a lot more Canadian folk music. Thanks.....

Depends on what you're buying. If it's a guitar or mandolin, there are none better than the Canadian luthiers, e.g., Michael Heiden, Jean Larrivee, Grit Laskin, DeJonge, Mario Proulx, David Wren, and probably others.

It's too bad that the beer we import to you is not the same quality as what's sold here.

I guess the other thing that Americans have to consider is the strenght of your dollar versus ours these days. It can go a long way in Canada.

LiSiDo makes excellent guitars in the lower price ranges. SeaGull and A&L are often excellent value. Then theres always maple syrup.

Don't get me started on Canadian folk music.

I buy North American where I can. Our economies are so intertwined I don't think it matters which.

For instance the auto industry is really shared between both countries being 10-11% Canadian.

Hi Humbled, What might be better is if you were to go up and visit these wonderful folks. Go to Halifax, St. John's or Gander one of Atlantic Canada's airport towns. You will be able to get the folk artists to sign the CD's and experience the hospitality your self. Don't forget to tell them you came up to say thank you. They'll be grateful to hear it and very touched.

Sorry about jumping on my "I love Atlantic Canada" soapbox. I must be talking to myself I haven't been back for 13 years. Maybe it is time for at least a visit.

Do you know what part of Canada your friend was stranded in? I'm thinking it was the Maritimes.

Loopy, I'm surprised that a southerner would 'get' the McKenzie. They are a brilliant parody on a large number of Canadian guys I've known. Where as Mike Myers "Wayne" and sidekick "Garth are incredibly accurate portrayals of Scarberians (Scarborough is the east part of Toronto where Mike grew up, and believe me, he didn't really do much more than accurately portray his childhood buddies), the McKenzies can be found in any smaller town in Ontario. I've seen these guys my whole life. I wish you could realize how little acting they did.

I think that the caller referred to Newfoundland, but I'm not sure since I didn't catch all of the first part of the interview. However, the few other reports that have bothered to mention this neighborly behavior have emphasized the Canadian's hospitality to the refugees trapped throughout the nation. This report was interesting because it came from someone who was there and who recited a laundry list of kind acts by the folks up north.

Check out the Evening Telegram website for grateful letters from travelers. There were thousands of passengers diverted to St.John's and Gander. Apparantly the Nefoundland media has receive a large number of letters of thanks.

BTW Without the "eh?" Bob and Doug very much reminded me of my friends in small town Newfoundland at the time. Except their words were stronger than "Take off" and "Hoser" And they were drinking Black Horse instead of Canadian.

We had beer case furniture on weekdays in college. Of course Friday afternoon you'd turn 'em in for the deposit.

I suspected Newfoundland. It would have been the first place that International flights coming from east of us would have touched down. They were trying to keep planes away from Toronto and Montreal as they feared that there could be terrorists who might fly them into the large buildings there.

I hate to say that they would not have received the same treatment in these bigger cities. Maritime hospitality is legendary and I would have expected no less than what these people were treated to.

Apparently there was price gouging going on at Toronto hotels.

The situation in Toronto just supports my opinion that big cities everywhere are the same. However, there were some attempts at price gouging here in the Midwest by Casey's gas stations. They cranked their gas prices up to 4 bucks per gallon. The fines and bad publicity is now costing them dearly.

Toronto is a beautiful city but the people aren't friendly like they are down east. When I moved there it was my habit to smile and say hello to stranger on the street. That goes over quite well in St. John's. I Toronto I think it made people very nervous.

Geez Jack,

You can get your lights punched out or be taken away by the fellas with the padded van if you do that in Toronto.

I grew up in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough. Yes, Toronto still is still a beautiful city and there are many wonderful things about it, but it sure has grown into big city since the 70's. It has lost a lot of it's innocence.

I was actually in Toronto years ago. Somehow i ended up at a place called the Canada Bar (or something like that). It was a wild scene. The waiter would approach with a tray full of glasses of beer and demand, "how many you want?" Everyone was getting crocked, yet the bouncer was ejecting anyone who gave any real indication of being intoxicated. The band consisted of a man and woman on guitar and keyboard doing Sheena Easton covers while a very drunk old man (who the bouncer ignored) played the cow ribs. To this day, I'm not sure if i was actually there or if I dreamed. wild stuff. My next trip up there will be to hang out with the Newfies.

Hanging out with Newfies or Cape Bretoners requires extensive training before attempting it.

You will LOVE George Street in St. John's! Every kind of bar you can think of in a couple of blocks!! But if ya go to St. John's see if you can get someone to take you "down the shore" or "around the Bay" to hear some real old time music passed down through the generations!

Some planes went to even wilder destinations than Newfoundland. A bunch were apparently sent to Labrador (Happy Valley/Goose Bay, where there's a large disused airstrip due to the American base being closed.)

And there was one 7(4?)7 which ended up landing in Whitehorse, Yukon, under fighter escort--they weren't sure if it had been hijacked but it actually had a fuel shortage emergency. And under the circumstances with all the re-routing in the air it's extremely fortunate none of the planes had to glide in.

Say, Humbled, our favourite national pastime is making fun of Americans, but we don't mean anything by it! We're just kidding around! Y'er all just family. (Literally in many cases). Come by anytime.
