Subject: What if there wasn't music???? From: Pseudolus Date: 05 Oct 01 - 12:00 PM No, I don't mean no music at all but no music for a particular thing. Music seems to add to everything, movies, tv, even elevators and stores but lets not go there. In any case what's out there that would just not be the same for you without the music? Could be a show, a pub, your house, your car, whatever. OK, I'll start! For me, I went to a church service that my wife was singing at and they lined up all of the singers (6 of 'em) right across the front of the altar and the service revolved totally around the music. It was one of the most uplifting services I had been to in a long time and I realized that without music, for me, no church service would be quite the same. So what is it for you? What loses it's luster if the music is removed? Frank |

They've published a book called The Quiet pint, which is a directory of pubs that do * not * have music. What has always fascinated me is that although Quakers (and I know there are Mudcat Quakers) have services which involve the most incredibly atmospheric silences, there is also a Quaker Songbook. I can't help wondering how anyone gets to hear them...! - Ian B |

Concerts - definatly concerts for me. { you knew someone was going to say that - didn't you? } Actually the other night a wonderful venue in downtown Ft Worth closed it doors. Perfect acoustics, great sightlines , good staff. I'll always remember some great concerts I saw there. Taj Mahal, John Gorka, David Crosby, Emmy Lou Harris { with Sam Bush },David Wilcox, Herbie Hancock, Oregon. I'll always miss good music downtown. |

But when I'm doing something else, I find it distracting and would prefer to have it quiet. It is sort of like drinking a beer while being on line, with the computer: there's an empty bottle sitting there, but you don't remember having drunk it. I'd have trouble imagining what the world would be like without music, however. Gets to would you rather loose your sight or your hearing. I would pick to loose my sight (though may that never really happen). |

If I can't play music, say at work, I just listen to NPR. Sort of turning it around, though: I CAN'T listen to music while eating in my car (where about 90% of my meals are eaten, for some reason). I always get annoyed if I'm at a beach or somewhere else outdoors and someone decides to treat everything in a half mile radius to the loud pop/rap/country/easy listening/smooth jazz music they want to play on a boom box. There should be a law that only acoustic instruments can be played outdoors { he said in an old, grumpy voice }. Anyone else agree ? |

At Five Points South in Birmingham, Alabama I found a good streetsinging venue for several years (mostly in the 1980's) but as the gentrification turned a buck in every corner canned music began to pollute the once-receptive ambiance. Last time I was there three businesses were playing music from loudspeakers all at the same time. Only the loudest, brashest (insensitive? drunk?) street performer could compete with that. For me it just wasn't any fun at all. I heard a show on NPR recently which reported that unpleasant music was used in several commercial spaces to drive away skateboarders and other people considered by merchants to be undesirable. Social engineering can use/abuse anything. Sad that this can happen in a supposed democracy like the US. |

I agree with you, Wesley, on noise pollution. Recently went to a little resort town to stroll the shops, and one particular shop had blaring music over loudspeakers outside. It was abhorrent. You had to go inside, because inside, although they were playing the same music, it was many times quieter. Orthodox worship services are nearly all music. If you took away our music we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. I thought Ravel's "Bolero" was the best intimate-moment music? What movie was that in? "10"? Phil, I'm with you 100% on which would you rather lose, hearing or sight? Music is waaaaaaaay more important to me than visual-medium arts or even sunsets and waterfalls (which I do love). I also hate when you're sitting at a red light, and trying to hear something on the news and the radio has decided it doesn't like the reception and is going bkoiikkk-zzzzzzzub and then some idiot in an over-polished car pulls up alongside and all you can hear is the THUMBP THUMBP THUMBP THUMBP of their megawatt subwoofer system. Surely no grand jury could possibly indict me for murdering such a driver.... Alex |

Even with no human music there would still be birds singing and crickets chirping. Oddly enough, I've had a real need for silence for some time now, and spend very little time either listening to music or playing it. This is in stark contrast to a life which revolved very much around music and musicianship for the past 4 to 5 decades. I now have little or no reason to buy CD's because I don't bother listening to them anyway. I don't know what the explanation is...other than that I am looking within more than outside myself for answers now, but that's how it stands. - LH |

Often I have a tune going through my head and I'm not interested in hearing other tunes at the moment. Quakers come from many different backgrounds and among Quakers there are different 'streams' lets say of worship, so that you can have structured and unstructured meetings, the structured ones tend to have more music within the meeting. Outside of meeting many Quakers like to sing and play instruments. The first group that I ever sang madrigals with was started in my home meeting, we were called The Consort of Friends. I occasionally go to Anglican services. But only when the choir director hads asked me to come and augment the choir for a particular piece. I can't imagine an Anglican service without music. Christmas without music would be very, very strange. I could do without canned carols from October onwards but not without being able to sing them myself and with others. |

I know that Star Trek Next Gen is one of these, because I saw an episode in Canada and was disturbed by the amount of dialogue I missed because the music was too loud... When the same episode aired over here 6 months later, I watched it again and was surprised at the lack of music. S So you see it's all your fault! LTS

The cab driver immediatly turned off the radio. He told the reporter the guards at the border could have killed them. Seems the government and other of Bin Laden's buddies have learned that we can be moved by music. He won't allow any westernized music to be played publically. I spent the day (1-6 pm) standing around (and, towards the end, sitting around) in front of the Idriss Mosque in Seattle's Northgate neighborhood. About every third car that drove by honked or waved in support; I think we actually have grown up a bit since Pearl Harbor, or even since the Iran hostages. Encouraging. No signs of any hostility towards the mosque (though I saw a few cases of road rage directed at other drivers). |

Well, in short, John Edminster wrote a tune to an Elizabeathen poem, a new Quaker hymm, though he declined to sing it at a worship sharing meeting, it is a hymm by and sung by a Quaker, but it is a real DOOZEY! It is really brilliant. It is seldom that I hear modern writers achive a really good traditional sounding tune, but John has done it masterfully. I will see if I can get it to someone who can put in in postable notation. Only slightly stretched, Larry... By the by, ever heard the song, the night before Larry was stetched??? |

Actually, for a while I didn't know I had, since you posted yours while I was composing my invitation to this thread. And of course I didn't say nor mean that either Quakers or Muslims "don't sing", only that my impression was they didn't sing in worship services", i.e. in meeting or at prayers in the mosque (aside from the muezzin's call to worship). And I still think Quakers of the silent meeting type don't sing in those meetings, though I was corrected by my fellow mosquesitter who said they do sing in worship prior to meetings. And of course I know there are Evangelical Quakers who are hardly more silent than we Baptists. ;-) But then, they also countenance military service, which sounds unFriendly to me. Liland |
