Havn't we had enough of Thatcher? Time she was dead and buried. (not necessarily in that order)

Even before I opened this thread I knew it was going to be about her...I suspect that we're stuck with her as the sort of mythical figure. "If you don't drink up your nice milk Mrs Thatcher is going to come and get you." A sort of real life Baba Yaga.

DH, I am not at all familiar with the laws of the UK, but here in the States, what you have stated here can be considered a death threat and can be prosecuted. You may wish to reconsider your wording in the future - no matter your level of disgust.

Allan, In England that would obviously be a joke. But if he were to be prosecuted, he would have so much popular support that they could never get a conviction.

I can remember singing "We'll hang Anthony Eden (Or any other political adversary) from a sour apple tree". Unfortunately no one did.

Another thread based on the principle that a good thing can be gotten by going at a problem with the "Ain't It Awful" approach.

The case law treats common people and prominent or "public" figures differently. I doubt that Deadhorse's statement "Time she was dead and buried. (not necessarily in that order)" could ever be considered as a death threat, especially since she is resident in a different country.

If I might inject a bit of music into the thread, Robbie O'Connell's "Humorous Songs" ((c)1998 by Jimmy Keane & Robby O'Connell) includes an absolutely hilarious track called "How Does Dennis Do It?", which speaks the the, ahem, performance of matrimonial duties by Iron Britches' no-doubt long suffering spouse.

I remember discussing with a die hard Tory, the possibility that Thatcher could disband Parliament and have the Tories the only ruling party in the land. After all they had the majority to do it at the time. Cromwell managed it. I often wonder if the thought ever crossed her mind.

Damn Right. definatly, not right-wing enough If I was in charge it would be a choice between national service or enforced banjo playing, that would sort them out. Gareth you've finally caught me and the rest of the "many" out. Or could it be you have made a huge sweeping assumption that could'nt be backed up in a month of Sundays. Cllr

National Banjo Service. With squeezeboxes as well. That's what the young louts want to sort them out.

You see them everywhere with their hair cut short. Designer labels where there should be slogans. Most of them wouldn't know the difference between a chillum and a carrot. Put them on a picket line and they wouldn't know which way to face. Take them on a sit-down and they'd want a cushion.

Off they go to their little jobs every morning. Pension plans...mortgages.

Younger generation's gone to the dogs.

I don't think "coining" would be the right term, since it's a phrase people will have been using for the last few centures.

After all, think of Bloody Mary and of Charles I being described as "The Man of Blood" by Cromwell. (Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.) I doubt if there are many people who haven't found themselves using it at some time or other to describe their friends, neighhbours and family members, at moments of high stress.

"Applying" is more appropriate for what Kinnock may have said in the pub. (And I doubt if he was the first by a long chalk to use it of Thatcher.)

Yes, McGrath, but ever since Mrs. Thatcher became a household name, everyone knows who "that bloody woman" refers to. Coined in that sense...

I'd have thought that Ryder-Haggards 'She who must be obeyed' would have been more apt while she was in power;-)

Anyhow - I still don't know what the recent turn of events was to spark this thread. Something that happened on the 26th or 27th I guess? Anyone want to elucidate? But I must warn, it can cause blindness...

Cheers
