Subject: A hug? Please!
From: GUEST
Date: 30 Nov 01 - 04:53 PM

I know that some of you will hate me for being a GUEST

Can the remainder of you please give me a hug?

I've got no job, my girlfriend's just left me and I'm drinking too much.

I'm very unhappy

I know that I could be anyone, but a hug would be nice

Thanks

Hey, gnu, is "ween" specifically a maritime word or is it used in other parts of Canada? I've never seen or heard it before I read it in one of your posts.

Subject: RE: BS: A hug? Please!

Yeah, I know. Been through a bunch of girlfriends and a wife of fourteen years that was just along for the ride... never really loved me when I added it all up. I know that doesn't stop the hurt but you just need to keep your focus on the fact that it will eventually heal, like a hangover... have a hot cup of tea... or a thousand... it will get better. Just DON'T WEEN !!!

"Ween" is specific, near as I know, to one of my best buds, from the Codroy Valley of Newfoundland. He is the only one I have ever heard use the term. Rather appropriate, wouldn't ya say, Maid ?

CC... you would enjoy meeting a true "Bayman" from the Granite Planet. Women are addressed as "Maid" and men as "Love". Took me aback the first time. Thought the old lad at the construction camp fancied me. But you catch on quickly and the old language and sayings are a treasure.

Guest... tis worse to show ire misplaced than to ween. Go back to weening. It suits your intellect.

Kendall's spot on, as usual.

Well, you can share all the heart space you want; but giving people power to hurt you is still an elective, one best left unexercised. At best, what you're doing anyway is agreeing to hurt yourself under conditions of thier choosing which is pretty odd behaviour. Thus apake Zarathustra, anyway!

Hope you are absorbing all these hugs Guest. They are what is known as 'Zen Hugs' in the Ship that Searched by Anne McCaffery - the hugs we would give you if we were there and could but we aren't and can't.

No, I didn't fall off my broomstick. It just went over walking home from the pub. I thought I'd just sprained it but Magician was staying earlier in the week and told me he thought I'd cracked it. Somehow I found myself and the doctors and then the hospital.... One day I'll find out how he manages to get people to do things they don't really want to!!!!!!

Now the lecture: Alcohol is a depressant. It's not going to make you feel any less depressed; it'll just keep you from feeling much of anything for a while (until the hangover... and the injuries from the drunk-driving accident... and the cirrhosis). So go do things you know will make you happy and will keep you pain-free in the long run!

Besides, you'll want to be sober for those job interviews and those dates with the new girlfriends (making a good impression, and all that...)

Here's hoping for all the best for you!

Amos is correct.

gnu

Ween - short for weeny - a little dick/penis that one is feeling sorry for them self over because no one else has one like that. It was one of our favorite saying in the Marines -

Like "What a weeny." "You bein a weeny or what?." "Quit being a weeny ya asshole."

So for me being a ween makes perfect sense in the context given here by yourself to guest.

Whether it is true or not who cares!

It is in the giving that we find ourselves I believe - so here's another for you all {{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}

Steve

If you'd like more Marine Corps verbage from my era - simply send $50 to me and I'll enclose a copy of my book, "A Dictionary of Terms Indigenous to The Viet Nam War", by Steve A. Neff

Special discounts to catters - with a portion going to support the cat.

Geezzzz Neff - you are a shameless hussy at times - I think I'll go out and spank myself. OHHH BABBBBBYYYYYY MMAAAKKKKKEEEEE MEEE CRYYYYYY!

I'd like to make a very subtle tweak to your postulation and Amos', if I may, Steve. While I think you're both right that giving others the power to hurt one is a choice we make, and we have control over whether or not we make that choice, I also think that in order for true intimacy to take place with another, one has to be willing to make oneself vulnerable to that person.

Hopefully, one has chosen carefully whom to trust in this way, and the other person will never willingly take advantage of this vulnerability in a way that causes hurt. And hopefully, if one finde that the other is, in fact, taking advantage of it and is causing hurt, one would remove oneself from harm's way. And hopefully one can take responsibility for having made the decision to trust, and not blame the other person if hurt does take place.

However, in order for a relationship to be healthy and viable, it is necessary for there to be intimacy and trust.

You're right Carol - the hurt is when we forget that we have a choice. And to forget one must immerse oneself in that risk of deep intimacy and trust (cannot have one without the other).

What I always tell the couples that I see is that if you are truly partners you each have the ability to hurt the other worse than anyone else in the whole world. Simply because of that same trust - and to abuse it is not good for the relationship. To instead nurture it and attend to each other as well as they can in their particular circumstance.

I'm just in this inane mood of late -

Steve
