Subject: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 05 Dec 01 - 04:26 AM Have any of my over-the-pond colleagues heard of Skyline Hurdy-Gurdies? The prices quoted on this site seem a bit too good to be true, and the email address supplied for interrogation doesn't work... Is this a scam, or is it for real? Even better, does anybody have any comments on the instrument offered by this guy? Dai - determined to find something he can play |
Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 05 Dec 01 - 05:24 AM Hurdy gurdy and massed kazoos, eh, Dai? Could empty Bucks! RtS (I've emptied bigger counties than this!) |
Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: GUEST,Paul Date: 05 Dec 01 - 05:33 AM Well, given that the email doesn't work, and that the site hasn't been updated for over 3 years, it would be reasonable to assume that they don't exist anymore. If they do, I guess it's a case of getting what you pay for. You certainly could produce, for a profit, a Hurdy Gurdy at that price, but it obviously wouldn't be a patch on something twice the price. You pays your money and takes your choice... Paul |
Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 05 Dec 01 - 05:36 AM Paul, even something twice the price of those quoted on that site, would be a good deal less than some of the proces I have found elsewhere. Do you play? Have you any advice to share? I'd be grateful for any feedback and caveats you might have... |
Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 05 Dec 01 - 05:38 AM My mate Ken says a hurdy gurdy is a waste of wood and that the only difference between a hurdy gurdy and an onion is that no-one cries when you cut up a hurdy gurdy |
Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: English Jon Date: 05 Dec 01 - 06:49 AM Your mate Ken is a wanker. __________________________ Clare Duguee in Sittingbourne, U.K. Makes the cheapest Hurdy-gurdy I've seen that I'm prepared to endorse. Don't know her address off the top of my head, but if you ask Phil Bleazey (http://website.lineone.net/~pgbleazey) he knows her (displays at festivals with her - good friends) and will happily pass on contact details. Forget about Bargain basement instruments though. There is no point in having one. At the other end of the scale, Eaton is fabulous but overpriced. Neal Brooke is probably your best bet for a fairly priced top quality instrument. Go to St. Chartier if you want to try before you buy. They have a big festival every year in the summer. Loads of makers turn up. EJ |

Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: GUEST,Jock Morris @ work in Edinburgh Date: 05 Dec 01 - 10:01 AM Met a very good hurdie gurdy player last year who had several very nice instruments. She said she got them from Hungary and the price she quoted was very reasonable (memory fails me for the exact figure, but it was something like £700 for an instrument that would have been 2 to 3 times that in the UK). Subject: RE: Cheap Hurdy-Gurdies From: GUEST,Songbob Date: 17 Nov 09 - 01:09 PM GUEST, if you're thinking a hurdy-gurdy is a simple "school project," you'd better be getting your PhD. They are not simple instruments to make or maintain, so don't start if you don't know what you're getting into. Bob |
