Subject: RE: For Hurdy Gurdy Fans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Feb 06 - 01:44 PM I too am interested in making one. I'm going to use the instructions at Dennis Havlena's site http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/hurdy.htm I'm still looking for thin wood for the top. Last week I went to a concert by the early-music group Piffaro. Afterwards, I noted a group of pleased and interested people who wanted to see the hurdy gurdy. There's hope for mankind yet. |
Subject: RE: For Hurdy Gurdy Fans From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 06 - 06:08 PM Jim O'Rourke made a great record called 'Happy Days' (which came out on John Fahey's Revenant label) - it is basically an hour-long minimalist drone composition for hurdy gurdy and guitar. Recommended for fans of Tony Conrad, I'd say. Check it out! |

Subject: RE: For Hurdy Gurdy Fans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 28 Feb 06 - 10:11 AM Thanks for the pix, John P. How nice it is to see all those people with the courage to play what they enjoy. Have you ever heard of the Texas Toot? It's a week-long early music gathering in Austin. One feature of the Toot is the "Krumhorn Konklave," a session in a beer garden where you can play any instrument as long as it buzzes. |

Subject: RE: For Hurdy Gurdy Fans From: Tootler Date: 04 Mar 06 - 05:50 PM An interesting programme. I saw Misericordia some years ago at an English Heritage event. They are very good and the spent quite some time talking to both myself and my kids about their instruments and the music. It was interesting that it is Stephen rather than Anne Marie who plays the harp as the harp seems to have become an almost exclusively female preserve. |
Subject: RE: For Hurdy Gurdy Fans From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Mar 06 - 07:05 PM National Public Radio (in the U.S.) had something this past week about a band interested in the hurdy gurdy sound and using an electronic version of the instrument, though they also had the analog (!) version available as well. I don't remember which program, but it was a fairly detailed discussion with examples. I'll post a link if I remember which program it was on. SRS |
