A long shot...

Growing up in the early '70's in the UK, a school song was popularly sung just before each holiday:

"No more days of school
No more days of sorrow"

There was another line refering to the teachers:

"We do the work
They get the money"

Memory suggests that it was sung to a varient of 'One man went to mow' but my memory may well be playing tricks.

Anyone recognise it? Or, have anything else to add?

Sorry don't know that one but it has reminded me of one we used to sing (early eighties Scotland) to the tune of 'This old man came rolling home' :

No more tables, no more chairs,
Kick the teachers down the stairs,
No more English, no more French,
No more sitting on the old school bench.
There were several verses but I can't remember the rest.

It was a boarding school - I was a day girl. I believed the tales to be exaggeration - now I've seen the memories on friendsreunited, I'm not so sure. (Currently off-line because the mean old head teachers complained about it!)

In the Essex (UK) primary schools I attended, I recall that we sang the following at the start of the last day of term:

"One more day of school
One more day of sorrow
One more day in this old dump
We stay at home tomorrow!"

This was to a variant of "One man went to mow".

Also, to the tune of "The Ash Grove" we sang:

"Our teacher's got a bunion
And a face like a pickled onion
A nose like a squashed banana
And legs like matchsticks"

Ah, childhood, such innocence(!?)

The tune to the bits that looked like it would be, as above, was a variant of "One man went to mow". The rest of it was chanted. In 2/4 time. And I believe there was a bit about "No more spiders in my tea, making ugly looks at me," but I scorn it as repetitious. Unless, of course, there were that many spiders.

The repetitious black bits above may be because someone has corrected a message that went out uncompleted, cut off at bl.... Hence the attacking heads.

My Mum, in NZ used to chant something similar:

One more day and we will be
Out of the gates of misery
No more marching 2 by 2
Like the monkeys in the zoo
No more spelling, no more sums
No more teachers to smack our bums
No more latin, no more french
No more sitting on a hard wood bench

I can't remember any more of that one but I heard the other one sung by Isla StClair at Loughborough FF back in 1972.
From memory it goes:

It's a life of misery
There's a signpost on the corner
Saying welcome unto thee
Don't believe it, don't believe it
It's a pack of dirty lies
If it wasna for the teachers

OK. For the record. In Melbourne Australia, mid 1950s, we sang the song that Joe gives above:

School's out, school's out!
The teachers let the monkeys out.

Sometimes with the added line --
Kick the tables, kick the chairs, kick the teachers down the stairs!(also in Joe's post)

Truelove (born and raised in USA) adds that he saw the line "no more pencils etc" in an "Archie" comic around 1950. He didn't sing it and didn't know how it was sung. (In Aus. we chanted it.)

I knew a woman who taught Spanish is a charter school in Kansas City. Almost all the students came from poor families. One day she told me that her students never wanted to stay home from school, whether they were sick or for another reason.

At both Northampton Town & County School, which I attended 1940-43, & Hendon County, 1943-50, it was "No more Latin no more French, No more whacks across the bench", though at neither of them was it the headmaster's practice to bend offenders over a bench for corporal punishment, but a table or desk.

The Ash Grove "Teacher a bunion" &c was widespread at all my schools, of which there were 7 all told. As I had a wartime childhood, with evacuating from blitz, I attended 4 different schools, with maybe 12 weeks off when should have been at school, between my 8th & 9th birthdays.

A fantastic teacher when I was at primary school sang a version of the song you are talking about, and I can still remember most of it.

Down at our school,

Boarding school 1947-1952: we traditionally sang this at the end of each term (but only at the end of term).   The tune derived from the first two lines of Good King Wenceslas, repeated ad infinitum. The first couplet was always
No more Latin no more French
No more sitting on the old school bench
I've forgotten most of the others, but one, not cited above, was
No more walking two by two
Like a f***ing kangaroo
When I got home for Christmas at the end of my first term, aged 8, I recited this in all innocence to my mum. (In those days that kind of language was not such common currency, at least in 'nice respectable' households). I'll never ever forget the stick I got!
