Well, I don't know about THAT, actually, not wanting to pry into his personal life and all. But, my new acquaintance, Iceboy, has joined the Mudcat and will be dropping in to these proceedings from time to time.

He's a guitarist, sometimes studio musician, from -- I think -- the Los Angeles area (???Correct me if I'm wrong here, Iceboy???) who considers himself "just a tradiional guitarist into all kinds of things, but mostly pre-war blues and post-war stuff up until about 1965. That doesn't cover everything I like but it's a good start."

His nom de 'Cat arises from his part-time residence in Antarctica, where he lives 4-6 months of the year and works as an HF radio operator. The rest of the time, presumably, he travels around looking for cool music and occasional hot times. So introduce yourselves -- and be nice for the new guy. He'll have time enough to wander into the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed, the Mudcat Tavern, the flatulence jokes, the blood feuds over obscure references in utterly unknown blues songs and such. For now, just act normal, y'all.

Oh. That IS normal?

nivver mind

Welcome, Iceboy. You'll find at least a few kindred souls here--

WyoWoman

Well, I can at least turn him on to a friend from my town who is in Antarctica several months out of the year. My friend Steve's dad is our banjo player........welcome, Iceman! We're only dangerous at feeding time, but considering that this is an International forum....., feeding time could be anytime........

Actually, Sorcha, he mentioned that a couple of his friends down there are from Wyoming, so I wonder if you two do have acquaintances in common. That would be too, too much from the Cosmic Coincidence Control Center...

I bet there's a fascinating assembly of people down there, given what it takes to get there and, mostly, to stay there. I saw the National Geographic piece on Antarctica a couple of issues back and was just blown away. If I didn't hate so much to be cold ...

Welcome, Iceboy, from beautiful, comparatively balmy Pennsylvania!

Be sure to check in with Skarpi Iceland (who, oddly enough, lives in Iceland!); you guys can swap "it's so cold..." jokes. Enjoy the Mudcat!

"The ICEBOY COMETH"

He does? How well does that organ function at a billion below anyway?

What's the male-female ratio down there and....if it's as bad as I suspect....could I make a buck by opening a 24 hour porn shop? Sell a few mags and some grainy 8mm stuff..........I mean does the term "blue balls" take on a special meaning in the Antarctic?

And finally, are there any ants there? I can't figure out why they'd be there since I doubt you have mant picnics, but if you name a place after an animal, even an ant, I'd have to guess there must be some reason.

Now Steve, don't be like that......He could answer some gnawing questions......Like, if you play some hot licks on your National and you get all sweaty, will your fingers freeze to the strings? And what sound does a frozen accordion make when it lands on a cold bodhran? Even more interesting, do they have any thermal codpiece protectors?

Oh yeah........Welcome to the 'Cat!!!

Hey friends and foes alike up there, don't pick on my pal WyoWoman! She may be a bit eccentric, but I was definitely not one of her delusional creations!! We're in the middle of our annual resupply phase down here so I'm pretty busy with vessel comms, data transfers to support SPole flights, etc., but I'll try to be a bit more present here soon. In quick response to a few of the more burning questions in recent posts, yes we have both men and women down here, most very healthy and thoroughly screened by professionals in our beloved medical industry. To paraphrase, "the iceboy cometh" when the situation requireth. The gender ratios down here make those prospects a bit more challenging, shall we say, but not insurmountable. (no pun intended) We're well supplied with alcohol, bars, noisy music, parties and many of the other supplies intented to lubricate the ever humming social machine down here. Could always use a few more women, though. Isn't that pretty much true around the world? ;^) FYI, the weather in our summer is probably much balmier than a typical midwest winter. Our daytime temps, (24 hour sunlight now) are in the 40's to low 50's. We're starting to cool off a bit lately. Scorcha, who's your friend down here and where does he work? Maybe I know him. So the phone's gonna start ringin any second. Back to work. Please post comments, inquiries and criticisms re: Charlie Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Bill Jennings, BLind Willie Johnson, or most any blues artist who was active from 1925 to 1965. Hell, I'll even talk about Ralph Stanley, Flatt & Scruggs, the Louvin Bros. and Patsy Cline! If things get too slow, we can always fall back on sex and politics, but that's what bars are for, right? May take me a bit to get back to you but I'll check in from time to time. Thanks for making me welcome in this little oasis.

Welcome, Iceboy, to one of the most interesting and unusual gatherings you are likely to find on the surface of this little blue ball (that one's for you, Spaw).

Assuming you will have some free time over this winter you should plan on spending some serious time in the Mudcat. Next Spring you will raise your head, stare with bleary eyes at the sun and wonder where the time went.

If you see Wyo before I do, always a good chance even considering where you are, give her a hug for me.

G'day 'Spaw,

"... And finally, are there any ants there? ... if you name a place after an animal, even an ant, I'd have to guess there must be some reason. "

I hate to be pedantic (OK, I'm lying ...) but the place is actually named for the lack (anti - in this case, opposite to) of an animal: arktos = bear (in Greek). I don't think there are any real bears native to the southern hemisphere (OK I just checked and there is the Sun Bear, Helarctos malayanus in South East Asia ... so it may occur south of the equator).

"Antarctic means "Opposite to the pole where there are bears". The Antarctic does have penguins, which the Arctic doesn't ... despite all those cartoons by artists that skipped geography for drawing lessons!

Regard(les)s,

Bob Bolton

Bob B. You're way ahead of the game, regardless of the roots of the name. Most people who ask me about Antarctica want to know what it's like "up there." They make me smile a lot! I can tell you I've never seen an ant down hear, although an occasional ladybug or fruit fly makes it in with the produce.

Jeri: "We're mostly insane here." I think insanity's a prerequisite for deployment to Antarctica! You have to walk the fine line, crazy enough to want to come here, but sane enough to do your job!

Naemenson: You won't catch me down here this winter! I'll be following the sun north next month. The 3-1/2 month long night might be conducive to romance, but I gotta get out for some sun and bar-b-que, for gawd's sake!

re: my tagging WyoWoman an eccentric. Now honestly aren't all who frequent a site called "mudcat" at risk of being called eccentric? Eccentric beats the hell out of crazy, and you'll never be accused of being boring!! Oops.....phone's ringing! Gotta go.

Eccentric probably is a perfectly acceptable description for one who has a wing named after her at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed and who introduced the Jello Pit to the Mudcat Tavern, is a founder of the Church of the Most Holy Musical Eclectic and, I believe, was the first to suggest that the Mudcat Men wear thongs on their evenings out on the town, just for the delight and amusement of the Wild 'Cat Womyn. I'm not saying I was the one who suggested Big Mick put the potato in his thong, though. Besides, who could have imagined he'd put it in the back???

Glad you dropped by, Iceboy. As you can see, there's never a dull moment around here. Well, actually, there were two dull moments, weren't there? Back in '01, I believe. But we got over it.

Welcome abored, Matey.

Oh, Yes!!! I love Memphis Minnie! She may have taught me more than anyone about how to play in band settings in G tuning, without just playing slide that is. GREAT guitar player. I also am a big fan of Lady Day. Her video of "Fine and Mellow" with Gerry Mulligan , still as a young kid, Ben Webster, et al is one of my alltime favorites. I also happen to like Victoria Spivey and Etta James an awful lot, but I was talking about pre-war blues guitar in that particualr post. Didn't intentionally leave out Memphis Minnie, she just didn't happen to come to mind at that particular moment in a hectic work day. As for the rumors of my being from L.A., well yeah, I lived there for years, but it never felt like home. Played out a lot and did some studio stuff, yes. I'm not sure any of it was worth having to live in LA, though! Well, yeah.....actually some of it was. I'm closer to home up in the Pacific N.W. now, but considering a relocation to more southerly regions.

So is Catspaw actually a "Kiwi" from NZ, or is it just that lemon has already been used and other fruits don't have the same ring. Like her choice of Presidents, too. I'm sure everyone here's seen the "How to be a Blues Singer" (or something to that effect) instructions that have been circulating for years. Now Tourette PawPaw Cleveland....was she on Okeh or Paramount? :^) Gotta run.
