Subject: SONGS ABOUT HANDS!
From: *#1 PEASANT*
Date: 07 Feb 02 - 08:50 PM

Greetings!

You see I have this artcar.... the Epicentral Shrine of the Helping Hand Vehicular Other wise known as handy or handie.

I have two speakers on the roof. Out of them comes music about hands. Now....there are lots of songs which have the word hand in them but I am interested in songs in which hands are central.... Grandmas hands, I want to hold your hand..... I have put together a list on the web page along with midis for lots of them. You can visit the pages here: Click to go to Handy and see what songs I already have

Let me know if you know of any which should be included. The car also talks....amazing people reciting sayings about hands. Drive art and live and thanks in advance for any songs found.

Conrad Bladey Peasant and visionary artist Never underestimate the power of the helping hand.

Subject: Lyr Add: DADDY'S HANDS (Holly Dunn)
From: ddw
Date: 07 Feb 02 - 09:42 PM

#1 —— I couldn't get too far into the site to see what's there and what isn't, but thought you might look up this song:

DADDY'S HANDS
by Holly Dunn

I remember daddy's hands folded silently in prayer
And reachin' out to hold me, when I had a nightmare
You could read quite a story in the callous' and lines
Years of work and worry had left their mark behind

I remember daddy's hands how they held my mama tight
And patted my back for something done right
There are things that I'd forgotten that I loved about the man
But I'll always remember the love in daddy's hands

CHORUS: Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin'
Daddy's hands were hard as steel when I'd done wrong
Daddy's hands weren't always gentle but I've come to understand
There was always love in daddy's hands.

I remember daddy's hands workin' till they bled
Sacrificed unselfishly just to keep us all fed
If I could do things over, I'd live my life again
And never take for granted the love in daddy's hands

Repeat CHORUS

Repeat CHORUS & TAG

cheers,

david

I don't know if it fits your theme, but you might take a look at These Hands. I think there's a link to the tune, but if not, I have the MIDI.

From the Broadway musical of the 50's "Kismet", putting words to the tunes of Borodin no less, a blend of Arabian nights and glitz, comes the song "Gesticulate"

"Dear hand, deft hand, spinner of fable and fantasy, fond companion to me since my birth Swift hand, kind hand, would they rend us apart, Leaving no finger or fist there, But just the hint of a wrist there?"

and so on...

I believe Alfred Drake was in the musical, and there was a movie.

From: Janie

What about "My Two Hands Hold the Earth"? It is sung as a round.

My head is in the sky, sky, sky.
My feet are on the ground, ground, ground.
And what about my blood?
Well it's like the sea.
And what about my bones?
Like the mountains be.
And my hands, oh my hands
I believe with my hands I can hold this land.
My two hands hold the earth.
My two hands hold the earth.

When my father bought a "Hi Fi" in the beginning of the 60's, he was notorius for talking the salesmen at record stores into giving him the copies of albumns not for sale. One was of Clint Walker, the cowboy actor who was "SugarFoot" and many other roles. What a beautiful bass voice he had--I can still hear it! My favorite song on that albumn was "With These Hands." Dont't know if I can remember, but I can remember parts of it:

With these hands, I will bring to you
A love that's warmer than the day,
And with these hands, I'll provide for you
Should you see a stormy sea, I'll turn the tide for you,
And I'll never, no I'll never let you go.

Any catters know the rest of the lyrics?

Chuck Suchy has a song called "Summer Hands" about the hands of a farmer. It appears on his album Dakota Breezes. I could only find this quote:

...with the work that it brings
When the wheat-grass greens and meadowlark sings
Summer hands.

Summer hands start out tender and thin
Not much different from their city friends
They toughen as they're used time and again
Summer hands.

Summer hands hold the newborn child,
Cool mother's brow, reassure her a while...

YOU DON'T KNOW ME
Ray Charles
(C. Walker/E. Arnold), Unichappell Music, BMI

You give your hand to me
And then you say hello
I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don't know me

Oh you don't know the one
That thinks of you at night
Who longs to kiss your lips
And yearns to squeeze you tight
Oh no I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
You just don't know me

I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
The chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me
And then you say goodbye
I watch you walk away
Beside the lucky guy
You'll never, never know
The one who loves you so
You just don't know me

Subject: Lyr Add: TWO HANDS (Jan Marra)
From: bbc
Date: 11 Feb 02 - 05:47 PM

I'm very fond of a song by Jan Mara called "Two Hands."

Two Hands

There's a quality taken for granted.
No one seems to talk about it much,
But babies are known to wither and die
For the want of a loving touch.
Children are blessedly simple.
They cry to be hugged and to be held,
But once we are grown, we're told to stand alone,
Told to keep our hands to ourselves.

Sometimes words will fail you.
You have more than words at your command.
You carry the power to love and to heal
Right there, in your own two hands.

So often, the touch of another
Raises doubt and suspicion in our heads.
Oh, it must be some kind of come-on;
It's a trick to try and get us into bed.
But I just need someone to hold me.
Why is it so hard to say?
So we fight, fool around, and lay our bodies down
And the need never seems to go away.

Sometimes words will fail you.
You have more than words at your command.
You carry the power to love and to heal
Right there, in your own two hands.

So eagerly we break the bonds of family,
Independent, self-sufficient, all alone.
And now the words "Reach out and touch someone"
Make you think of the long distance phone.

(Sing chorus twice & end w/
Right there, in your own two hands.

best,

bbc

Subject: Lyr Add: CAPTAIN JACK (Billy Joel)
From: Blackcatter
Date: 12 Feb 02 - 02:00 AM

How about Billy Joel's "Captain Jack"?

Saturday night and you're still hangin' around
You're tired of livin' in your one horse town
You'd like to find a little hole in the ground
For a while, hmm

So you go to the village in your tie-dye jeans
And you stare at the junkies and the closet queens
It's like some pornograhic magazine
And you smile, hmm

{Refrain}
But Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push 'n' you'll be smilin'

Oh yeah, yeah

You sister's gone out, she's on a date
And you just sit at home and masturbate
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call, hmm

So you stand on the corner in your new English clothes
And you look so polished from your hair down to your toes
Oh, but still your finger's gonna pick your nose
After all, hmm

{Refrain}

Oh yeah, yeah

So you decide to take a holiday
You got your tape deck and your brand new Chevrolet
Ah, there ain't no place to go anyway
And what for, hmm

So you've got everything, oh but nothin's cool
They just found your father in the swimming pool
And you guess you won't be going back to school
Anymore

{Refrain}

La da da, Oh yeah, yeah

So you play your albums and you smoke your pot
And you meet your girlfriend in the parking lot
Oh, but still you're aching for the things you haven't got
What went wrong, hmm

And if you can't understand why your world is so dead
And why you've got to keep in style and feed your head
Well, you're twenty-one and still your mother makes your bed
And that's too long, oh, oh oh yeah yeah!

Subject: Lyr Add: MES MAINS SUR TES HANCHES (S Adamo)
From: BlueFolk
Date: 12 Feb 02 - 02:51 AM

A pretty song by Salvatore Adamo: Mes Mains Sur Tes Hanches

Oui tu l'auras ta revanche tu seras ma dernière chanson

Oui tu l'auras ta revanche tu seras ma dernière chanson

From: SharonA

Eindhoven: Can you provide an English translation for that song? (I'm particularly interested to know what "hanches" are, since the hands of the first person in the song are on the "hanches" of the second person... they'd better not be haunches! *G*)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO MUCH IN LOVE
by The Tymes

As we stroll along together
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two
That we don't know what to do
So in love (doo, so in love)
In a world of our own (doo, so in love)

As we stroll by the sea together
Under stars twinkling high above
So in love are we two
No one else but me and you
So in love (doo, so in love)
So much in love (doo, so in love)
So in love (doo, so in love)
So much in love (doo, so in love)

We stroll along together
I tell you I need you oh so much
I love, love you my darling
Can you tell it in my touch?

When we walk down the aisle together
We will vow to be together till we die
So much love have we two
Just can't wait to say "I do"
So in love (doo, so in love)
Are you and I (doo, you and I)
So in love (doo, so in love)
Are you and I (doo, you and I)

THESE HANDS
(Kevin Wilson/Walter Fixsen)

As I twist the cap off this bottle,
The words my mama said to me
Ring back through a haze of tender memories
To the days when I sat upon her knee.

She'd fold her hands over mine as we prayed.
We'd count our blessings every day.
And I remember promising to make my mama proud.
She'd shake her head and smile. Lord, it seems like yesterday.

CHO: She said, “Son, these hands will make your living.
Son, these hands will make your love.
These hands will keep your promises when you become a man.
You'll be known by the proof in these hands.”

As I sift through the wreckage that's left of my life,
I've made so many mistakes.
And it feels like a hurricane has blown away my mind
And left this heart in pieces and these hands with the shakes. CHO.

Here's one I wrote for my baby daughter...

TWO LITTLE HANDS
by Al Boyce

Two Little Hands
Reaching out to me
Two Little Hands
Ten little fingers wiggling
Squiggly little baby giggling
Two Little hands gently demand
All of the loving any man can handle
Just holding two little hands.

Two gentle souls
Stand by your side
Two gentle souls
Ready to guide you through life's trials
And watch you grow with pride.
Two gentle souls tenderly hold
The little bundle sent from God to care for,
Trusted to two gentle souls.

Two little eyes
For all the world to see.
Two little eyes
Holding the promises
Of God's unbounded gifts to thee.
Two little eyes smilingly spy
To see the world look back
With faith and hope renewed
Into Two Little Eyes.

Grandma's Hands
by Bill Withers

Grandma's hands
Clapped in church on Sunday morning
Grandma's hands
Played the tambourine so well
Grandma's hands
Grandma's hand used to issue out a warning
And she'd say
Baby, don't you run so fast
Might fall on a piece of glass
Might be snakes there in my grass
Grandma's hands

I'm talkin' 'bout my grandma's hands
Soothed the local unwed mother
My grandma's hands
Used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands
Used to lift her face
And tell her she'd say
Baby, grandma understands
But you really loved that man
And put herself in Jesus' hands
Grandma's hands

Yeah. . .
I'm talking... I'm talking
'Bout my grandma, ah yeah!

Grandma's hands
Used to hand me a piece of candy
Ah Grandma's hands
Picked me up each time I fell
Grandma's hands
Boy, they really came in handy
She'd say
Nettie, don't you whip that girl
What you wanna spank her for
She didn't drop no apple core
But I don't have grandma anymore
If I get to heaven I'll look for
Grandma's hands

I'm talking 'bout my grandma
Talking 'bout my grandma
Oho...yeah...
I'm talking 'bout my grandma...

With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand
We shared some secret brandy and we wished each other well
And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell....

THE HAND THAT OPENS EMPTY
From Bob Reid's CD "We Are The Children"
words & music © Bob Reid  1993

My Dad works for a company that everybody knows
They moved their business out of town but not everybody goes
And sometimes we have problems when it's time to pay the rent
And sometimes I get hungry and all the money's spent

To the land of opportunity came my mother, me and Dad
Looking for a better life than the kind of life we had
And sometimes we have trouble 'cause we get so little pay
And sometimes I get hungry 'cause we eat one meal a day

And the hand that opens empty is difficult to hear
Above the noises of our lives though it may be very near
Someday it may be your hand, Someday it may be mine
We all must keep on listening to hear that hand in time
I'll hold that hand in mine

I like to go and visit James when he's feeling up to it
It's hard just living everyday but he doesn't want to quit
And sometimes he has trouble cause it costs a lot to live
And sometimes he gets hungry and something's got to give

There's a woman in our neighborhood her family's grown and gone
Alone in her living room the curtains are all drawn
And sometime she has trouble cause it's hard to get around
And sometime's she gets hungry and she can't get downtown

And the hand that opens empty is difficult to hear
Above the noises of our lives though it may be very near
Someday it may be your hand, Someday it may be mine
We all must keep on listening to hear that hand in time
I'll hold that hand in mine, I'll hold that hand in mine

Blackcatter: The loss of all hands was the subject of Gordon Lightfoot's song, but the word "hands" is never used in the lyrics of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

#! Peasant: Don't forget about "The Banks of the Ohio" and the many versions of the "Two Sisters" ballad theme, in all of which the murderer takes the victim by the hand and walks along the river, only to throw the victim into the water and drown her.

Crash Test Dummies have a song called "Give Yourself a Hand". I'll let you look up that one yourself without a link from me, since I'm feeling a bit prudish today. *blushing at the subject matter of the song*

Here's one written and performed by an Aussie lass by the name of Jane Saunders.

LILY WHITE HANDS

Oh mother, oh mother, I found my true love.
He will give me a golden band.
Gonna wear your gown to church on Sunday,
And I will give him my lily-white hand.

CHORUS: “Oh, Mary Rose, you can do better
Than to marry that boy,” her mother said.
“Oh Mary Rose, my youngest daughter,
Don’t you marry that boy and share his bed.
Don’t wear a gold band on your lily-white hand.”

“Oh, mother, oh, mother, I really love him.
Won’t you try to understand?
I will go to church as a wife of a farmer
And I will pray with my lily-white hands.”

(Chorus)

“Oh, mother, you found your peace in heaven,
And I remember the words you said.
And when I go to church on Sunday,
I will pray with my callused old hands.”

(Chorus).

WE'VE COME A LONG WAY
by K. McGarrigle

(Chorus)
We've come a long way since we last shook hands
We've still got a long way to go
We couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
We couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow.

All my life I wanted to roam
To go to the ends of the Earth
But Earth really ends where you started to roam
And you and I know what a circle is worth.

We've come a long way since we last shook hands....

What did you do with you burden and your cross
Did you carry it alone or did you crack
We both know that a burden and a cross
Can only be carried on one man's back.

We've come a long way since we last shook hands....

So give me your hand for the parting touch
Fare thee well, thanks a lot
I know that we promised to keep in touch
But you and I know that we both forgot.

We've come a long way since we last shook hands
We've still got a long way to go
We couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
We couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow.

Ewan MacColl had one about evolution and progress; my rough memory of it is - "Five fingers has the hand, five fingers, five fingers, Five fingers has the hand, good for work and play. Started as a lizard's claw, then became a lion's paw, Couldn't be satisfied because that isn't the human way."

Irish tune "Tabhair dom do lamh", give me your hands; there are modern composed words in English someplace on the Cat I believe.

Did I miss "He's got the whole world in his hands" on this page or on Conrad's page?

lots of songs with verses about hands, for instance, "If you can't go on any longer, take the hand held by your sister, Every victory's gonna bring another, Carry it on, Carry it on."

or

"The Junta shot the fingers off Victor Jara's hands/They said to the gentle poet/Play now your guitar if you can/ It could have been me, but instead it was you ...." (Holly Near)

the Two Good Hands song about Sacco and Venzetti is by John McCutcheon, i think. and on his Greatest Story Never told c.d:
"Extend a Hand"
"As we seek to understand
The meaning of our history
We each extend a hand"

and the Master's Hand about a fiddle being auctioned has been sung by Laurie Lewis. The original poem is by Myra Brooks Welch.
"the foolish crowd can hever quite understand
the worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
by the touch of the master's hand.

In Jackson Browne's "Before the Deluge" is the line
"While the sand slipped through the opening
Their hands reached for the golden ring
In their hearts they turned to each other's hearts for refuge
In those troubled years that came before the deluge"

\Peter Rowan's song "Before the Streets Were Paved"
says " Oh, grandfather tell me is it true you worked the land
and the tools that you used were made with your own hands?"

and Peter Rowan also has this linie in "The Forest For The Trees"
"I cleared this land with my bare hands, she gave me everything for free, she gave so much i could not see the forest for the trees."

In Greg Brown's song Canned Goods :
"When i go to see my grandma,I gain a lot of weight,
with her dear hands she feeds me plate after plate"

In Tommy Thompson (Red Clay Ramblers) Hot Buttered Rum:
"Dime store santas can't disguise their empty hand and empty eyes"

Tom Paxton's Last Thing on my mind has:
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning, in your hand, in your hand"

Kate Wolf's LIlac and Apple says:
A long time ago we were planted by hands
that worked in the mines and the mills

in Stephanie Davis' song the Rope, which is sung by Laurie Lewis:
Grab (oh reach up for the rope)
and hold (withe both hands hod it tight)
through the darkness...shines the light.

in Townes Van Zant's Tecumsaeh valley Caroline :
for a dime a day and a place to stay
she would turn those hands to labor

in Vincent (starry starry night)
Weathered faces lined in pain
are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Greg Brown wrote a song about Ani De Franco (Vivid)
YOu gave me music, with the boquet form your hand
You gave me a living song something i could understand

and in Billy from the Hills, (another greg brown tune)
If you're looking for a helping hand,
he'll give you one, you know he will

another Greg tune form the same album Speaking in Tongues:
When someone was sick we gathered all around them
and layed our hands upon them, old and young....
and that one day we may lay our hand on one another
and seek the healing for ourselves....

and from Down at the mill
(same slant 6 mind c.d. as the former quotes)
their hands are filthy, their souls are dirty

My friend Bernie Robinson has a song about Left Handed people
called What's Left.
\

and there are many other songs that have touching, holding,
massaging, throwing, paddling, hitch hiking, grabbing and other
things that hands, fingers, thumbs, etc. do.

good luck and sorry for repeat info....

The Hand Of Kindness
Written by Richard Thompson

Well I wove the rope and I picked the spot
Well I struck out my neck and I tightened the knot
O stranger, stranger, I'm near out of time
You stretch out your hand, I stretched out mine

O maybe just the hand of kindness
Maybe just the hand of kindness
Maybe just a hand, stranger will you reach me in time
In time

Well I scuppered the ship and I bent the rail
Well, I cut the brakes and I ripped the sail
And they called me a Jonah, it's a sin I survived
Well, you stretched out your hand, I stretched out mine

Maybe just the hand of kindness
Well, maybe just the hand of kindness
O maybe just a hand, stranger will you reach me in time
In time

O shoot that old horse and break in the new
O the hung are many and the living are few
I see your intention, here's my neck on the line
You stretch out your hand I stretched out mine

Well, maybe just the hand of kindness
O maybe just the hand of kindness
Well, maybe just a hand, stranger will you reach me in time
In time

O maybe just the hand of kindness
Well, maybe just the hand of kindness
Well, maybe just a hand, stranger will you reach me in time
In time.

Nice one, Moley - your Ma & Pa's piano stool is obviously a swinging place to hang out -

Anyway, back to business:

THE HANDS OF JOSEPH
Ralph McTell

When they looked at Joseph's hands
They said, They're the hands of a carpenter
They're big and they're powerful and they're strong
They're the hands that should work in wood
And they're the hands that should work a long day
Joseph he did all those things
But he also learned how to play

Chorus
He would sing about joy, sing about faith
That the people wished they had
How he heard the voice of Jesus
When the rolling sea got mad
He's a boat in the harbour, he's safe in that love
He know some day he'll be sailing above

When they looked at Joseph's hands
They said, They're the hands of a stonemason
They're big and they're powerful and they're strong
They're the hands that should work in stone
And they're the hands that should work a long day
Joseph he did all those things
But he also learned how to play

When they looked at Joseph's hands
They said, They're the hands of a fisherman
The musician and the mason-carpenter
And he's happy all the time
For they're working every day
And those old hands of Joseph
Oh how they can play.

"My Mother's Hands," by Shortbuckle Roark on Victor (1920s I think).
"Mother Called Her Child To Her Dyin' Bed," has the line "I'm goin' to leave you in the hands of my God," 1920s blues.
"Trust your life in the hands of God" from "Jay Gould's Daughter."

Lots more hands of God to be found in ancient gospel music if the spirit moves! ...   Bob

Subject: Lyr Add: SEE THESE HANDS (Frank Mansell)
From: Newport Boy
Date: 22 Mar 08 - 04:59 PM

You might like a poem:

SEE THESE HANDS
Frank Mansell (The Cotswold Poet)

See these hands folded now,
Hands that wrought for so many,
Tended and tidied a family,
Soothed them and calmed them,
Fed, clothed and reared them
Almost on nothing.

See these hands resting
That in the old hard days
Picked blackberries for pennies
And gathered dry sticks in bundles,
In dim March days I scarcely remember
When beech woods were a mystery
And fox cubs played among daffodils.

See these hands resting,
That raked hay in the fields
Of a summer coloured with butterflies,
That brought tea and sandwiches
To tired men at harvest,
And scattered wheat and Argentinian maize
To hungry hens.

See these hands, hands never still,
Hands they have folded now,
Hands that are resting,
That will never be active again,
Long though I kneel for their blessing.

(Written on the death of his mother)

Phil

I've got me fiery fingers
N' I've got fiery hands
And when I get up to heaven
I'm gonna join a fiery band

I am looking for this song, I am honestly not sure how it goes. It was a sort of rap/r & b song from the 90's. The singer says something about getting killed for their hands...he goes on talking about all these things that happen to young kids just for their hands.
It sounds like it could be a everlast/whitey ford/danzig song. It is driving me crazy not being able to find it. Any help would be great, thanks.

"Touch has a memory" by Clive James/Pete Atkin:

"...When in a later day
Little of the vision lingers
Memory slips away
Every way but through the fingers
Textures come back to you real as can be
Making you feel time doesn't heal
And touch has a memory."

Didn't Jewel have a song about hands?
'My hands are small I know,
but they're not yours, they are my own'
Sorry can't remember the rest
Cheers,
Quokka

Call all hands to man the capstan,
Keep the cable running clear,
Heave away and with a will, boys,
For old New England we will steer...

From "Rolling Home" but probably not what you're looking for.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Ben Harper - WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS - "Diamonds on the Inside"

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make a better place
With my own two hands
Make a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

I'm gonna make it a brighter place
I'm gonna make it a safer place
I'm gonna help the human race
With my own
With my own two hands

I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you got to use
Your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands

With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
