Sorry seem to keep getting an error message so I thought I'd start a new thread. If this title is the one we're going to use how about some really kitchy spoof CCCP/Soviet Union style posters showing the proletariat and flags except with guitars, melodians etc instead of hammer, sycles and guns ? How about it Les !!

I think that we should commission a suitably left wing song from Leon Rosselson or Billy Bragg.

Mike at Hodgsons(formerly the Grounds) is the owner of and brewer at the Wawne Brewery(which is now located in Hodgsons) - perhaps he could brew us a festival bitter. any suggestions for names?

Roger

I'll see what I can do for some artwork. I really do think that someone ought to have a word with Chris at Adastra soon, though. If we leave it too long it'll look like we're against the regular festival, rather than keeping things going in the meantime. I don't mind doing writing and graphics, but I don't sit on committees any more. I've retired, you know, and that would be just like working again!

I got to agree Les, someone needs to talk to Chris & let her know that what we are TRYING to do is 'hold it in trust' until the proper 'B.E.R.F.F.' can happen again next Year....NOT that its something we are trying to muscle in on....& that nor are we trying to 'capitalise' on its good name among Festival-goers.

I'm also a little but concerned about what we name it giving Chris the wrong impression in that regard.

Frankly, with all the grumbles we've had here, a slight 'guilty conscience' might make it seem like 'The People's Voice' Festival seems to imply that we are saying 'the people have spoken'....& spoken AGAINST how the B.E.R.F.F. has been run...

(Thats not 'pointing the finger' btw... as I've said before, I didnt go to the last 2 Festivals, largely because of her attitude towards me personally over the couple of Festivals before that. So I'm not someone who will defend Chris Wade, though I do, most definately, support having a Festival in Beverley.....& if thats the one she heads up, all well & good. (It would be interesting to find out though, whether it looks like there is the possibility, by talking to Publicans, etc, of a Fringe-y type thing on another w/end in the Year....))

Anyway, its neither here nore there for me, cos I CAN'T be there (or its 99% unlikely anyway) for the one we are currently trying to arrange. *sigh* .....& Brid Widder had just about persuaded me to get involved with organising the Camping across the w/end...

Well Les

We are nice people and so do feel guilty about not telling Chris about our plans.

A much less nice person than me might point out though no-one told us(or anyone else) that it was being cancelled in the first place. Certainly the publicans found out about it in the local press.

Paul, I agree that we should let Adastra PLC know of what's going to happen, however I'm not really worried about whether we upset or offend. I for one, do not want to be involved in the the big picture (i.e. BERFF) and they can get on with their planning for next year, which I shall most probably attend. I think the fact that 'something' is going on should be viewed as a positive effect by the official people. That the People's Voice sounds an up yours is immaterial, it is the fact the backbone of previous years (i.e. the Fringe) still want to meet, enjoy each others company sing play get pissed. Just some info that may have got missed from the end of the last thread. I've spoken to Padget, he had only just found out. he said Johnny Booker wasn't planning to come this year (he wants to go to his caravan and save some pennies), Nigel never came to Beverley anyway. He is very interested and wants to be kept informed. I think reading between the lines when things are definite he wants to be officially 'invited'. I told him that Bev would not be the same without his presence. Again i'll be involved if you need my name for committees etc, but as I'm over here attendance may be a problem. I do have access to copiers etc so can do a bit of buckshee printing. Perhaps those who are going to Barnsley can meet and talk.

Here is the text of email that I have sent to Chris Wade:

"Chris

I thought it only polite to write and let you know that, since the announcement of the cancellation of the 2002 festival, a co-operative of Beverley publicans and traders and local folk enthusiasts have been talking together with a view to running the fringe events anyway. Our motivations for this are:

· To lessen the economic impact on the businesses in the town · To reduce the disappointment and disillusion of regular attenders at the festival · To provide some continuity so that the official 2003 festival has the best chance of succeeding in attracting an audience.

What we have in mind is to run the usual singarounds and sessions in the Sun, Tiger etc and to co-ordinate the activities of those pubs that normally book acts into their premises at weekends by suggesting appropriate local acoustics acts that they could use on that particular weekend.

We certainly have no intention of usurping the official festival – all activities will be open pub events with no charge. Indeed we will not use the B&ERFF name in any shape or form in our publicity.

We hope that you will see this as a positive move and one that will be to the benefit of the next official festival in 2003. As folk enthusiasts we wish you every success in planning that next festival and it will have our full support as always.

It would be nice if you could help to publicise the fringe event by, perhaps, putting a ps on the festival website inviting people to visit Beverley anyway and join in with the sessions.

All the best

Roger Busby (for the folk co-operative)"

hope everyone is happy with that

Roger

I like the idea of session ale. I completely lost track of the last thread 'cos I've been away. So let me see if I've got this right.. we're going ahead with the unofficial official fringe events, landlords and local businesses are up for it, camping has been organised and Chris Wade has been kept in the picture oh and we're going to advertise it at clubs and sessions etc through out the world! cool.... count me in to help as I live fairly locally (Hessle) and work commitments allowing I'll do what I can.

Roger - that's excellent, mate. Your email says everything perfectly.

I got Chris' flyer for the 2003 festival this morning, and it sounds very positive. She is asking for feedback from regular attendees (as I believe she has always done). I would just like to say to anybody interested in Beverley 2003 could contact Chris Wade on chris@adastey.demon.co.uk

Beverley has always been an excellent festival in a lovely, friendly, historic town, and I'm sure you'll have a great time at the 2002 fringe festival, and at the 2003 Beverley and East Riding Folk Festival (which will have its usual friendly fringe addition).

I have had a very positive response from Chris who suggests that we can work together on this and 2003 and beyond. One of her concerns is that we don't raise peoples expectations of what our fringe will offer this year in case they are disappointed and this reflects on the festival proper. I agree with that and we must be careful about how we publicise this - we don't want people coming expecting Jon Wright or Vin Garbutt and getting Jim, Les and Maggie!

Chris has suggested a meeting with interested parties and I don't have any problem with that.

Maggie and I are hoping for a good attendance at the Kingston on Saturday night - there should be quite a few non-catter folkies there as well who will no doubt offer help and advice. As long as we don't spend all night talking about it. It's Maggie's birthday and it's a big one (of course, I can't say how big in a public forum!), so we've got a lot of singing and playing and eating and drinking to do. But of course, you're all welcome!

Mags says that any lengthy discussion on Saturday can take place in the other room! I concur, and as I will be with the Fragrant One my views are: I will sing and play as required, she will run a singaround if needed, and I will help produce flyers, posters and other graphics. Following Jim's suggestion I have produced a 'socialist art-type' graphic that looks like a red flag with a picture of someone not too unLeninlike with finger in ear, which may be of some use.

Hi Roger. It's been ages (possibly over a year) since we last saw each other at Nellies sessions. I've been reading this thread and the Beverley folk festival thread (which for some reason I can't find now!)with interest. If you are still looking for venues to host sessions etc you could try The Easy Yorkshire. We have performed there on a number of occasions. I know it's an eating house and has draylon seats and carpet and possibly a bit out of the way but Harry the Manager is very pro live music. He mentioned to me a couple of weeks ago about the BFF and that if anyone was interested he would be more than happy to host sessions etc. You might like to think about it at least. Also if you are producing any leaflets I'll happily take some and distribute them at our gigs. If you need any further info Roger you can contact me at outsider_folk@hotmail.com. Good luck.

Well! Maggie's Birthday at the Kingstone went down a treat, it was a full house and we played until 1.30am. no attempt was made to usurp the party by (the peoples revelution) as most of the interested parties were three parts to the wind ,and anyway had more respect for Maggie. Ray was there and has requested to be kept informed,Les has prodused some preliminary artwork. Now we require a date & time to set up a meeting. So lets get ready to rumble.

We have quite a bit of the programme in outline now but we really do need to get together everyone who is interested in progressing things.

I suggest Thursday of next week(28th) in Hodgson's (the grounds) at 8.30 pm.

I'll post an outline of what's agreed so far in the next message.

OK Folks

In the absence of any get together yet I have been pushing ahead with talking to landlords etc. about the format of what we can do. Here is the outline of what I think is possible together with notes of what is agreed and what yet needs doing :

· The big singaround to take place as usual except for the first Friday evening to be in the front bar of Hodgson's ( a better room than the snug at the Sun). Otherwise in the Sun Saturday and Sunday hosted by Ray Padgett (if he agrees). · The main musicians session in The Tiger as usual Saturday and Sunday. Does it normally run on Friday evening? Who usually runs the session or does it run itself? · Informal sessions in other pubs around town – Nellies, Oddfellows, Westwood Club, Dog and Duck have agreed so far but I haven't spoken to anyone else yet. · Folk club upstairs at Hodgson's on Saturday afternoon – possibly hosted by Cottingham FC · Open Mic upstairs at Hodgson's Sunday afternoon. I've not approached them yet but I hope to persuade Driffield FC to host that. · Booked acts in the following pubs – Mariners Arms Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights– Hodgson's Saturday night – The Sun on Sunday night. Possibility of others such as Queens Head and Forresters Arms and Nellies but I haven't spoken to them. · Camping on the Leisure Centre field – pretty much agreed with the Council - John Yeaman will prepare the field as usual. · Hodgson's to open for food at 8am and stay open with an extension until 1am. The upstairs bar to be used as a communal room with the extension and then remaining open serving non-alcoholic stuff until people want to go to bed – playing/singing allowed in there no problem. · Hodgson's and The Sun to put on beer festivals to attract the CAMRA crowd · Hodgson's to brew a festival ale called "session bitter"

That's about it so far.

I don't know if the session runs Friday night.

It has run itself on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes (and then most of the afternoon. I'll start letting the regular West Yorkshire sessioners know it is happening - can do this word of mouth over the next couple of months.

Cheers and well done Roger and co. You've done a grand job.

Out of small acorns.....and all that. You've done a great job there Rog. I wish I could make the meeting but it's my very regular Thursday sesh over here in the People's Republic but as I've said put me down as a committed member of the co-operative. Even although we've said we're not out to usurp the official BERFF we may need to address that some of us may have to be more equal than others (if you pardon the expression) we will have to have a direct role in making sure people get to events that musicians etc are directed and that the pubs are happy with our efforts but I'm sure you'll discuss that on Thursday but that in mind and the 'peoples' bit being in operation we could all have red arm bands with hammers and sickles on them. Can we start a list of possible attendees that are singers and/or musicians and where there normal preference of attendance would be. I think it's safe to say that the Sun/Hodgsons (front bar) is to be more aimed for the singaround type sesh but that the more formal type of Folk Club can be at Hodgsons. the main musicians session pub can be the Tiger but do we want to a. to feature artists at the other supporting pubs b. designate certain pubs as Singer/Songwriter + Acoustic, Shanty, Mudcat etc.

MCfat; you've put me off already by talking about organising sessions into "Formal", "singer/songwriter" etc Music is music is music as far as I'm concerned and will surely organise itself...sessions good or bad just develope...without lists. Can't we just flit about looking for whatever suits, or, start our own if nothing appeals?

I always thought that the Tiger was crap for sessions (no offence intended but the room aint big enough to accommodate everyone that tries to fit in and the accoustics are duff) I hope that people will keep the ample space that is available for sessionettes at Nellies in mind and what about the folk club/sing around space upstairs at Nellies? I agree that organising things may not be in vouge for the peoples republic of BERFF but it would be usefull if people volunteered to host session/sing arounds just to make sure they happen. I will be at the meeting on 28th and am looking forward to it. Oh yeah my band will be available that weekend for free and I may know some people who would be willing to do some workshop type events for those that like that kind of thing commrade John

The Tiger has often ended up hosting two or three sessions in previous years, Irish etc in the room at the front and French in the room round the back (which is even smaller).

I do agree that music is music, but then I do both singing and tune playing. Some people only want singing, some people only want tunes and we should try to do our best to point them in the right direction.

Personally I like the kind of general session we are used to at the Kingston, Nellies, Sun and the many other pubs in the area that put up with us. And aften the best sessions happen when a few of us just happen to get together, totally unplanned. But I do feel that we should try to be helpful to people and give them wht they want. Perhaps any 'catters (and their friends) who read this and are thinking of coming would let us know what they would prefer, as the Fat One suggests. If possible, we'll provide it.

I understand that the local dance teams are thinking about coming - that would be great!

I'll hopefully be at Hodgson's next Thursday.

I think Les is spot on old flower. It's a case of pointing in the general direction but that a gentle 'suggestion' from the politbureau that Tiger is for French/Irish;Nellies for Old Timey etc it'll just make the flow of the weekend better. More on the good news front is that the Chesterfield Sheep Shagger tells me that Stainsby is definitely 'on' this year

OK Jim

I've sent you a rough draft of a flyer.

For everyone else, what we have so far is:

Singarounds and sessions in the Sun Inn, Tiger and Nellies.

Booked acoustic artists in five pubs so far - but probably more than that.

Folk club saturday afternoon - probably run by Cottingham FC.

Open mic Sunday afternoon - probably run by Driffield FC.

Real ale festival in two pubs - plus special festival ale brewed by Wawne Brewery. to be called "session ale"

Possibly dance teams

Possibly street buskers

Possibly a shanty festival based around Beverley Beck

As we start to publicise this the response has been phenomenal - so who knows what else might come on-line in the next few weeks.

Roger

I have been contacted by councillor Nev Holgate - who is on the East Riding Council and also a member of the barge preservation society. They had already though about running a shanty festival to partially replace the B&ERFF but is keen to amalgamate with us. The idea is to have a shanty festival based around Beverley Beck and the pubs immediately adjacent to it - The Foresters and The Sloop.

Sounds good to me - I don't see any clash with our basic premise and he reckons that they will advertise nationally in the canal & barge magazines to bring in that audience.

any comments?

Roger

I have circulated all of the pubs in Beverley with a questionnaire asking if they want musicians to play informally on their premises during the festival and do they want to book an acoustic act on the weekend of 21st-23rd June. I delivered them by hand very early yesterday morning and have had six replies already all of whom want to book an act in the evening and will encourage musicians during the day.

What we need now is a list of people who want bookings. Do you? Or can you recommend someone else who does? Since we are looking at pub venues a number of criteria will apply and I have addressed them in the list below. Please send me details of acts to me at r.i.busby@open.ac.uk Is the act happy playing to a mixed pub audience rather than in a folk club atmosphere? Do they have their own PA? Will they appear for the standard pub fee of £80 - £100? It may be that many of the pubs don't have music licenses and will be restricted to solo acts or duos.

Please also let me know the name of the act, contact details and a summary of the type of music played – trad folk, contemporary folk, blues, country or whatever. A line up of instruments and personnel might also be useful in helping the publicans decide who to book.

I will simply pass the list on once I have compiled it

Roger

We should have some flyers available in about 2 weeks time. You can pm me or Roger to get some for your club, festival, whatever.

Just to re-iterate - we are doing this on the cheap in an attempt to provide a totally free festival, consisting mainly of singarounds, sessions, open mikes, with a few local artists booked by the pubs involved. There'll be a campsire (with food), and accommodation for the late night stuff that normally goes on. As there is no proper Beverley and East Riding Folk Festival this year, this will be a one-off event acting as a sort of 'placeholder' for next year's 'proper' festival.

But it's totally free!! Come one, come all! Like we say round here - it's cost you nowt, so if you drop it, you've lost nowt!

Les

Just to clear any confusion, Andy Hammond's web page is dedicated to PVFF-Cottingham live. And that's great! Beverley Folks page, however, will include news on PVFF as well, but also up and comming events. It will have info on local artist's. As an example, we are talking to Punch the Horse at the moment, Mike (vocals) is puting pen to paper as we speak. We want other interesting folks who have a story to tell, (or appearing at) to get in touch. Not everybody has a website, So, this is a chance to publish/air your views on this "people's page!" So, c'mon, what you waiting for?? Please be polite. John.
