From: Amos
Date: 13 Apr 02 - 03:41 PM

The candidates for the MUDCAT SAMPLER CD are streaming in, and boy do we have some talent in these ranks, I tell ya!!  This is going to be a Hoot of a CD to be on, to buy, own and listen to.

Here's the schedule,  in rough blocks:

Collection of Candidates  ---- up to end of May
Review and Prelim Selection --- May-June
Final Selection                           ------June
Initial Build-                              -------------July
Quality Enhancement/Normalization -------July - August
Final Build                                                    ------------ August
Organize Logistics for Distribution ----------June--- -----August
Final QA                                                                                ---August
Release                                                                            ---------------Early September

This means that if the Mudcat Sampler CD is to include your cuts, it has to be among  the collected candidates FOB my place by the end of May at the latest, and preferably by the end of April.

So get strummin'!

And for those of you who have written entries for inclusion in the Mudcat SONG BOOK, a separate collection of SONGS FROM THE MUDCAT SONGBOOK is being organized.  But I have enough songs in there to make a whole CD of just mine, which wouldn't be very interesting! So ya better help  me out and record some of those choons, you perfervid talents, you!!

If ya wanna send me stuff, PM me or email me at this address and I'll send you the address.  I prefer CDs, or MP3 files, but will manage with tapes if that's what you got!!& nbsp; Or mail me MP3s or point me to  a download site.

Warm regards,

Amos

Thanks to the Mudelves (:>)) the peanut butter got cleaned up!!

They were an artifact caused by copying HTML source code and pasting it -- somehow they got treated as literal characters rather than as hard spaces in the HTML display.

Morty, I ain't sorry a whit!! That was beautiful!

Amos - what on earth is 'normalization'? Apart from the fact that I suspect it's an American expression, I also expect it will disqualify just about all Catters!!!

Ours went airmail a week or so ago.

Well, Ian, the concept I had in mind was when you review sound levels and fitlers used on all the cuts to make sure some of them aren't blaring out when you play the CD, and others recorded at lower level hard to hear, and so on. It doesn't mean making Mudcatters normal!! :>) Talk about an exercise in rampant futility!! LOL!

Aside - Amos - I'm not hung up on technical perfection - but as the only recording device I have is a $15 handheld tape recorder - the tape hiss etc really doesns't make for a recording that would convert well. Hope to get a friend with a home studio to record something for me.

The agreements on the panel were documented in the first thread, over here. I'll send McGrath and Alice the data on choices available and made sometime in the May to June time frame. See 'Final Selection' above.

Kat, round up the Wenches and make 'em sing. :>) Ya want to put your Dad on there? Can do.

Amos, some of the songs are just streaming right now, but I can change that so you can download a choice. Each of my songs are mentioned and linked somewhere on Mudcat threads, like Paddy's Lamentation, The Foggy Dew, etc. I suggest using LOVE IS TEASIN', as it connects to this Mudcat thread: Click Here

Let me know which track you want to use and I will make it available to download.

OK, let's see about something from the British side. Any Catters within easy reach of Oxford who desperately want to submit something to Amos and haven't got the facilities, PM me - if it's something we can get down in a couple of tracks and a couple of takes, I'll record you on the mobile and send him something on CD.

I can manage solos or duos... can't manage bands, I regret.

Sorry, Amos, my friend... I'm just trying to submerge you in recordings!

I've downloaded three for the sampler -- The Fields of Amerikay, Love is Teasin', and She Lived Beside the Anner. Dunno yet how crowded this CD will get but I think I feel a musical wind a-rising (unles that's just Spaw out for a walk....).

By the weay -- to anyone watching -- here's the corrected link -- if ya wanna hear some really sweet cuts from our own Willie-O -- a mighty fine player and singer of mighty fine music.

Now I've heard
There's another Mississippi

Can someone please help the addled, the old, and the technologically challenged?

How do I get a sample to someone? Do you need a copy of the original studio DAT for this? Will a CD work? How does it need to be sent? Who do I send to?

And, does anyone know who owns the rights to "Mingulay" (I should...we did the song, and I *still* have no idea if we're paying any royalties)? Barring that, "Old Redcoat" is an original, and would definately not be subject to any legal entanglements.

Thanks in advance for the leg-up.

Celtic Soul:

I can handle a CD if you'll mail me one; I will send you a PM with my address. The general plan is outlined up above on this thread.

I have not firm opinion one way or the other on the royalty issue -- there is no profit involved, and all the performers are voluntering their recordings, in order to help support a non-profit organization. Anyone who wants to make stinkum about that is mean, in my opinion!! L:>)

See PM, and thanks!!!

Guys:

I REALLY REALLY want to represent the WHOLE Mudcat universe here.

Don't hang back!!

This is the most amazing community, I've heard it said, that the Internet has seen since the days when the Well invented threads.

So lettuce not be shy, reticent, disgruntled, aloof, indisposed, introverted, remote, inflexible, apathetic, indifferent, removed, disengaged, unyielding, obstinate, catatonic, fixated, frozen, entropic, passive or unmoving!! Step forth and put your music out there for the Mudcat Sampler CD!!! You will be glad you did!! And so will hundreds of other people!! Imagine!! Act!!

There are many Mudcat members on mp3.com, and I compiled two stations of music taken from most of those Mudcatter sites.

The first is The Wild Bird's Nest and the second was called Mudcat Music II.

For some time, Mudcat Music II was being blocked, although I contacted mp3.com about the problem. I decided to re-assign the URL and name it More Mudcat Music - still blocked, then finally came to the conclusion that mp3.com's new filtering of adult content must have caught English Jon's band name "Whoreticulture". Sorry, Jon, but when I removed your track, the link worked again as

More Mudcat Music.

If we don't hear from all the Mudcatters on those stations, I'll send emails to let them know of this opportunity to do a group CD. There may be more members that I missed who answered the "Mudcatters on mp3.com" thread. Downloading off the net would be an easy way to compile tracks of those who want to participate.

Alice:

I would really like to have those Mudcatters on mp3.com included as well on the CD - Anahata and Chris Amos are already providing tracks, but I am not sure of all the names of the other Mudcatters (I mean the mudcat names).

If you'll PM me an email address, we can follow up on this part separately.

Recordings from the MUDCAT ADVENTURE, when Bill Sables and Allan C traveled on the road trip to meet Mudcatters, would be a great addition to the compilation. I just wrote to Allan regarding this - I am sure he has recordings of Mudcatters they met and made music with, and others along the trail made their own recordings when Bill and Allan visited. I would like to hear the best from that road trip to include many of the people who played/sang when Bill and Allan visited.

Do we have Australians and Kiwis included yet? Members in Japan? Where is Skarpi? Joe Offer? Anyone reading this who can think of more people to include, please contact them and let them know of this opportunity.

Oh, oh. I wanna play. I wanna play.

The person who was going to record my CD has had some very bad stuff come up personally and so that's down the tubes. I wonder if I have another likely suspect in my life who could record a couple of songs for me....

Hmmmphf.... lemmee see ...

I'll find someone. Where there's a will, there's a contested settlement!

Oh, Wyo!! So glad you chimed in, I was about to write you!

Skarpi is readying something.

I LOVE the idea of the Sables & Alan tour cuts being included. And anyone who has other "Gathering" songs they think should be included, send them along too! No reason it has to be limited to single acts!

It's gonna happen folks and folkies!! A Magical Mudcat Mystery Tour. Ya gotta be there!!

I do have some recordings of the Adventure tour. Will do my best to coordinate that.

By the way, folks, another issue brought to my attention is that music that is not in the public domain or that you do not have the rights to record could become problematic if we have to hassle with getting copyright permission. So, original work you created, works you have persmission to record from the copyright owners, and PUBLIC DOMAIN songs/tunes will be easiest to use.

Alice, the spelling of the band with English John in it is

Whorticulture

Perhaps if you just take the 'E' out of the name as you spelt it, it will be accepted!

A few more random thoughts:
  • Clearly any copyright issues must be checked before this CD goes public. I hope that contributors will do the necessary research and make their sources clear so Amos doesn't have to do the work and take the responsibility.
  • I hope the copyright of the contributors will be acknoweledged and respected. On the CD which I have sent Amos, (of myself and Mary Humphreys) we invite anyone to use the arrangements and versions of songs that Mary has made (though from traditional sources, she has re-written or compiled some of the words from different versions and fitted or written new tunes to others) - all we ask is that she is acknowledged. "Name Names", as Chris Coe said at the singing competition at the National FF this year, referring to singers' introductions to their songs.
  • Amos - with all this encouragement for contributions, what's going to happen if there are (as I would imagine there will be) too many contributors to be able to represent every one on the CD? Will it expand to a boxed set? (!)

I think two will do it, worst case. All the encouragement is to bring out the silent, raise up the slain, heal the dead, and bring them all out of silence, singing.

In the final analysis we may get more then we can handle in one CD, but there are many catters out there who have not responded yet but who will when the sound of the trump penetrates! :>) If you have thought of it, but are waiting for a personal encouragement, please advise. Your package of personal encouragement is waiting here for you!! :>)

I don't know everyone, so I may not think to write you all (and doubt I could!) but don't wait for that! Speak! Sing! Play! Record! Send!!

A

How about

Mudcat Cafe

Blue Plate Special!

Somehow, "Wake Up, Rise Up and Sing!" seems a little too 1930s-struggling-workers for this crowd. (sorry Aine!)

But its your call, Big A!

LOL!!

Open to suggestions! Chocolate-covered Folk Songs! Step right up!!

Meanwhile, get your cuts prepared, folkies -- it's only gonna be the best compilation ever seen -- imagine!! Folkies all over the planet just coming together and playing and singing 'cuz they feel like it and like each other. Wow!! Wodda concept!!

Amos, I would like to contribute, but you know that I have never been in pure folk. I'm mainly a classical choral tenor in love with old spirituals and traditionals. Would some 70+ year old song, accompanied by piano, be ok ? Are these songs free from copyright hassle ? I'm thinking Amazing Grace, Shenandoah, or Love Song from Robeson's movie Sanders of the River (1930). If you prefer a typical Argentinean song, just tell me, but that could be out of the general orientation of the CD.

I can obtain a technically good CD and MP3.

Un abrazo - Andrés

I know a beautiful song in Welsh from Argentina - more precisely from the Patagonian area where a lot of Welsh folks settled last century and took their culture with them. So what is wrong with an Argenitnian folk song Andres ? Go for it! Mary

I agree the "What do you think? I like it!" would be a great subtitle or even title. The only thing I have against the other one suggested is that it is too much like that old book "Rise Up Singing" and may have definite associations for some...but the sentiment behind it is nice.

What about "Songs for All of Us"?

A CD!!! What a wonderful idea!!! I can not think of a better candidate to represent the acoustic blues, on what is sure to be a fabulous collection of artists, than our own dwditty. For those of you who may not of heard him he is a great thumb style guitar player with an incredible voice. He is also a talented writer. Hop into paltalk to hear him sometime if you haven't already. Those of you who know his music will understand why I think he will be a wonderful addition on the mudcat CD. I can see it being a fabulous and eclectic collection ( gosh say that 5 times fast) of music and I look forward with great excitement at the outcome of this project. xoxoxox hugggss -Rory- P.S. My title idea.... "Music in the key of M" The Mudcat Collection Vol 1

That's a perfect example of the kinds of things I say to my thirteen year old daughter and her friends when I really want to embarrass her. The look of pain on her face is classic, while her friends just look astonished.

I do think this is all really far out, and "madcuts from mudcats" is really neat, Pops.

I still like Blueplate Special, and I dig the concept of the cover art being a white plate on a red checkered tablecloth next to a cup of black coffee. On the plate are a serving of mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a dinner roll, and a CD.

You know homeless, you've got a point. I don't know why it was called a "blue plate special" at the old lunch counters, because it was usually on a white plate or whatever they normally served on, but a light blue plate would probably make more sense.
