I was reading the "Playing despite Disabilities" thread and wishing I had a copy of some Art Theime music to listen to,when I had an interesting thought: Suppose someone(Max?)put together a sampler of music by talented folks who visit this website, and offered it for sale on the site? Would anyone, other than me,be interested?

You know, you really have a point. Dan, Art, Rick, Frank, Sandy and others...but I'll tell you what I'd really love... ... ...I'd like to hear a song from Alice, a favorite tune from Bill D., and Big Mick, and Roger, and Alison, and gargoyle, and McMusic, and Barbara, and Duane's pianolin, and Barb Shaw's bluegrass, and on and on. Something special from each 'Catter. Bill's posting pics, but a voice and a song...that's the ticket too.

I've absolutely no idea how that could ever be pulled off! But we've talked to Helen in Oz, seen her picture...wouldn't it be great to hear a little harp too? Especially for us folks half a world away. Personally, I wouldn't even care how great the recording quality was. It would just be fun to have wouldn't it??? From an Irish pub to a Mississippi delta, from a Blue Grass gathering to Brisbane, from Oz to the Appalachians...clear around the world. What a kick!!!

Bout half a year ago now, Max was collecting tapes for a compilation of some sort. Don't remember what the thread was called, but Bert and Max posted a song together - one Bert wrote, and I think that was what set the discussion off. Don't know whatever happened to it...not like Max has too much time on his hands or anything... it's probably still in the works.
Anyone remember what that thread was called?

The problem I see is how you cram sound bytes from 2,740 (not an accurate number) mudcatters onto one CD. Even if you pared it down to one song per region or country, it would still be a very tough job. Who would give the axe to which submissions? Who would want to? Sounds like a Herculean task if I ever saw one!

Soooo, maybe the answer is being able to access sound clips through mucat, as opposed to on a CD? That way we could go to those people we're curious about.

Here's a big picture suggestion, one that I'm sure would take a lot of work to implement but maybe it's a vision for the future of this community:

Each member (yes, you have to join to qualify for the extras) gets listed in an index and when someone clicks on a member's name you get a short biography (we were posting them on a thread a couple of months ago) as well as access to sound clips or pictures, if available. I have no idea what technology this would require, but it's something we do at the Dead Runners' Society (another irreverent internet club) and it helps the sense of community to be able to quickly find out more about someone who's just posted an interesting comment.

Then again, CDs would be great, maybe there just needs to be a series of them to handle all the artists.

yes, there are ways...it would not be TOO hard for some of the technically inclined to make a .wav file...or even an MP3, perhaps..and then email it to a central site: and I'm sure that will happen someday, but until that is an easier process, perhaps those with the will can simply exchange tapes, etc...by snail mail within regions, and then to a central clearing house (like Max) for later distribution.. Max has already started part of this process, and like the pictures,(which are a lot easier), we can eventually have an established system..

I'm not too technically minded but with a little help from our good friend 'Folksie Lady', who was responsible for inviting us on to this ICQ thing, have managed to compress a large Wav file of me playing a bouzouki, to a small compressed mp3(layer 3) file. It was then very quick and easy to send it via ICQ to her to play with Media Player.

Maybe this is the route to pursue?

Whatever it is, I'll be in it! What's the biggest Web site that one can get for free? I was about to leap into creating a site for 5Meg (text plus a few Midis), but that sounds like it would be too small to house more than (?) 6 -10 MP3's. Any advice welcomed.

This is so bizarre. I was just thinking of how great it would be to be able to do a sound clip of singing and then link it to a message here for you to listen to.... then I clicked on this thread. I thought by the title that this was a rebirth of the idea of sending in recordings of ourselves to Max, (which we discussed, but I haven't gotten around to doing). The reason I am now working with a version 7.5.6 finder and a version 7.6.1 system on my Mac, is that when I was trying to connect my Yamaha keyboard to my Mac, I somehow zapped the computer. So, although I was trying to make advances in using the computer for music as well as art and design, I really messed things up. I plan to upgrade to system 8.5 and get things straightenend out for the keyboard and for a microphone, but it will be awhile. It was really a coincidence that I was thinking of doing a sound clip of singing a minute before I read this thread. It would be a 'good thing'.

The thought of doing a CD to bring alittle money to the sight sounds like fun to me.It will be wanderfull to hear everyone via technology but having a few on a CD would still be a start and something I would love to have as a "colectors item".I only got this computer box in september and already feel great afection for the wanderfull conversations going on here and would love to hear the music behind the thoughts.I did a cd last year and it is amazing how much stuff there is room for. I bet you could get 20 peaple or more on this thing/.Would discmakers donate something for the chance to bring in so meny possable custimers? I am very interested in this and hope to contribute. We (my band) are scheduling some studio time in the next few weeks for a demo tape. I will try to put something on their that we can forward. As ballads are the thing that I do the best, perhaps my contribution will be "Dublin, In The Rare Oul Times". Waddya think? Perhaps I can load it as a .wav file, convert it to MP3 and send it to those that are interested?

Just an idle thought at this stage. If anyone wanted to send me good recordings encoded to MP3 format I could make audio CDs.

If this is a good idea perhaps there are other Mudcatters with the facility to burn CDs who could share the load.

I'm not sure yet how practical this would be in terms of time & cost, & maybe I'm not well located, but let me know your thoughts.

OK, anyone who has any music that they are willing to share for free (that is let the Mudcat keep all the money) and does not have there music wrapped up into complicated record deals or copyrights, etc, send it to me (tapes or CD's). Bert and I will choose which songs will end up on the first CD (Mudcat Members Vol I).

Include with the music what we are allowed to do with it. Can we use one song for the CD without worrying about royalties? Can we put clips of it on the web? Can we put the whole songs or album online? Can we do it with Real Audio (poor quality), MP3 (near CD quality)?

I will make as many CD's as we can. I will post any music in any format that anyone sends me and allows me to do so. This is a complicated issue that will take some thought, but with most situations like this, I find the best way to figure it out is to actually do it. Anyway you look at it, it starts by sending me stuff. Once I get a reasonable amount of submissions and see what people are allowing me to do with it, I will let you know and we can start thinking about it together.

Max, it would be interesting to send you songs that are in the DT, then you could have a clip of one of us singing it along with the page of the lyrics. I'm thinking for me to do the love version of Foggy Dew, which I posted way back when, or Gartan Mother's Lullabye, which I posted corrections to. It would be great to have Frank McGrath do Spancil Hill... anyway, I am thinking of certain songs in the DT that I have a special feeling for in terms of submitting lyrics or discussing the forum. It would be interesting to hear from the people that we 'identify' with a song performing the song.

yes, that's what I was thinking, and even though it may take some time for us to get a tape to you, it could be an on-going possiblity as we continue adding lyrics. You would have to do extra work, but it sure would be getting closer to our wishful thinking when we did the fantasy song circles to be able to someday hear each other sing, rather than just write about it. Denny, if you are checking back on this thread, go up to the right hand corner of the page and you can search the database of song lyrics. Maybe Max will set up the kid's version of the Mudcat, and that could be an obvious place to link directly to all the lullabyes, camp songs, game songs, etc, that are in the database.

Robin, I don't know about it making much money, but it seems like a logical progression from being able to hear midi tunes to being able to hear us sing a clip of a song.

I suggested that I do "The Rare Oul Times" because early on in my singing it became a song I was known for. But I wonder if we have a problem and I shouldn't do something in the public domain. I am open to suggestions, as we are going to be in the studio doing a demo tape for an event at Notre Dame. We are going to do this in the next several weeks, and I will use the studio time to put something on tape. I sing many different types of songs, but ballads are my strong point. We might be able to get help producing a CD from some competent friends in the DC area. They're not Mudcatters, but they know lots of Mudcatters and I think they contributed a lot of lyrics to the original DT database.

There are two different goals in this thread, I think. One is to hear what lots of Mudcatters sound like. The other is to have an income-producing CD. The income-producing CD sounds as if it's going to focus primarily on the professionals in the group. That's great, but let's not forget to look for a way to hear what lots of Mudcatters sound like.

Me and a guitarist, were called AAAAG 'An Accordion and A Guitar' have already put a few tracks down in the studio which would be great to put on to the CD. Also me and Bill Sables are going to put some sets together and record them fo the CD.

You know what I would love? I would love to create a page on mp3.com for the mudcat. That way any catters with mp3s could donate a track, and a compilation disc of mp3s could be sold through mp3.com. You could listen to it as radio mp3, and then buy it and support mudcat.

I think that would be a great project.
