Subject: Euphoria--Holy Modal Rounders From: Orpheum Date: 14 Apr 02 - 08:39 PM Hello, I am fairly new to the Mudcat discussions, but I have enjoyed the list as a resource for lyrics for some time. I did a master's in folklore at UNC with an emphasis in religious folk song, the northern equivalent of the Sacred Harp in 1840s Maine (I wrote on DH Mansfield's American Vocalist), so if anyone ever needs a something from northern hymnals, I may have it in my collection. I have a weirder request. I am doing a lecture on folk revival things and am planning to do "Euphoria." I understand Peter Stampfel wrote another verse about the darker sides of drug abuse. Does anyone have the verse? Thanks much, David in Syracuse |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: Orpheum Date: 15 Apr 02 - 11:07 AM I have three: Ma's in the kitchen... There's a man in there underneath the table... and I pinched Eve on the bottom. It is an odd lecture, covering things from union and Civil Rights songs to Child ballads (I figure Bo Lamkin ought to wake up undergrads), to countercultural things. But I'm nervous that by singing Euphoria I might seem to condone drug abuse. If Stampfel has written his own antidote that would help the song work in the lecture. Thanks, David |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: EBarnacle1 Date: 15 Apr 02 - 03:55 PM I don't know whether this will help but what I've got is "Dad's upstairs and the dog's tail's twitchin'; Ma's downstairs bitchin' in the kitchen; I'm up here kickin' the gong for Euphoria...Chorus. If you have other verses, I'd like them, myself. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: Coyote Breath Date: 15 Apr 02 - 11:36 PM Know Peter, have LPs, have sung song for eons. Only those three verses I know of but he is capable of almost anything, so a fourth (or more) is entirely possible. If you see this Peter, I STILL have your Dorthea Lange book I've been holding for you since 1965! CB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: Amos Date: 15 Apr 02 - 11:51 PM It's okay, man -- go ahead and sing it to the undergrads with a clear caveat up front: " THIS SONG COMES FROM 1964. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME OR IN YOUR OWN TIME_STREAM!" LOL! Then you can put one at the end that says "Please note: No real brain cells were damaged in the performance of this song. Let's keep it that way!!" I don't know of any other verses, though!! Regards, A. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: Ross Campbell Date: 17 Jan 17 - 11:20 PM Always worth a listen to the Holy Modal Rounders. Just three verses here, words slightly different from above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8S2hCUVisg Later version (1978?) with Robin Remailly and yet another verse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ1J99feOZw Ross |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Euphoria--Stampfel From: GUEST,Tom Mycock Date: 19 Jan 17 - 08:50 AM I believe they recorded three different versions, the first being in 1964 (Ross's first Youtube link above), when they were a duo, the second being the more joyful, raucous-sounding 1978 version and the "darker" version on the 1999 album 'Too Much Fun'. I like to think hindsight and bitter experience had a part to play in including the darker side of drug use in the later version. |
