Subject: R I P Tony Rose From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 07 Jun 02 - 02:26 PM Following a phone call from a friend in the West country this morning I am sad to announce the death from cancer of Tony Rose. Another grand singer gone too early. Burl. |
Subject: RE: R I P Tony Rose From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 Jun 02 - 02:54 PM That is sad news indeed, and I'd hoped it wouldn't turn out this way, as did everyone else who's ever known him, or listened to him. Here's a page with more about Tony - though it hasn't caught up with his death yet. |
Subject: RE: R I P Tony Rose From: Ed Pellow Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:01 PM Very sad, indeed. Not much else to add I'm afraid. Off to listen to "Young Hunting" now Ed |

Subject: RE: R I P Tony Rose From: okthen Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:10 PM There are many with more memories than of him, but mine are of a late night, after the club, the first time I saw someone put whiskey in coffee, talking with him and (the late) Brian Hughes, in Gimber Cottage, overlooking St. Johns Green, in Colchester, Essex, UK. I always thought him to be one of the good guys. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Jun 02 - 03:10 PM He was a smashing singer, player and person. What a loss! |
Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: greg stephens Date: 07 Jun 02 - 04:33 PM He was an old friend from folky youth days, we went to the same college in the 60's,a wonderful singer. Sheath and Knife , Just as the Tide was Flowing and the Bellringing come to mind as my favourites of his, but there were so many. I was dead jealous of Tony's beautiful voice, because he went off to be a teacher, whereas I wanted to be a musician and had a lousy voice. I told him how much it pissed me off! Frequently. I have so many fond memories, I'll just have to think about him for a while. Cheers, Tony. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: pavane Date: 07 Jun 02 - 05:00 PM Very sad news. I saw him here in Pontardawe in the early 1970's, a great evening. Wish I could listen to Young Hunting again, but I seem to have lost it. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 08 Jun 02 - 07:01 AM Tony was the guest the first time I ever went to a folk club (Brentwood) in 1968. I was converted to folk music on the spot and still can't get enough. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: GUEST, NOMADman Date: 08 Jun 02 - 07:32 AM A great loss. We were hoping so much that he would recover and still be with us. I had the opportunity to see him perform just twice - once in London and once in Philadelphia. Those performances are memories to treasure. It's so good that he made that one last CD so new listeners can appreciate his talent.

Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: wes.w Date: 08 Jun 02 - 07:51 AM I knew a few sides of Tony Rose. For nearly thirty five years I've been a fan of Tony Rose the performer. For nearly thirty as a club and festival organiser too. For the last fifteen or so, Tony the teacher, witty family man and rugby fan from Odcombe. They were all really smashing, talented blokes. I'll miss them all sorely, as will all of his friends in the Yeovil area. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: GUEST,Rob Ixer and Rosie Hardman Date: 11 Jun 02 - 12:00 PM For me Tony singing Sheath and Knife was the definitive revival folk performance. Rosie and I have many fond rememberances of Tony back in the early to late 70s and 80s. He was another of the Leader greats- one of a very select group who one way or another have been silenced. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: R I P Tony Rose From: Harry Basnett Date: 11 Jun 02 - 12:52 PM I know this isn't the time or the place but Tony's sad loss makes that whole affair even more sickening! |
